The short answer
As of August 2026, IIM Mumbai's MBA admission for the 2026-28 batch is closed with the merit list declared; the route was CAT 2025 only, with no other exam accepted. The published two-year programme fee for 2026-28 is Rs 25,00,000 plus a refundable Rs 50,000 caution deposit, per the official admissions page.
Selection process
- Apply on the official IIM Mumbai admission portal within the window; the application fee is Rs 2,000 for General/OBC-NCL and Rs 1,000 for SC/ST/EWS/PwD candidates.
- Take CAT 2025 — the admissions page for the 2026-28 batch names the Common Admission Test as the required examination for the MBA, MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM.
- Shortlisted candidates book personal-interview slots on the portal (the 2026 cycle activated PI slot booking after results).
- The institute declares programme-wise merit lists and then waitlist movements — the 2025 cycle publicly ran to MBA wait list 6 and MBA-SM wait list 7, so movement is real and worth tracking.
- For the 2026-28 batch, the admissions page states admission has closed and the merit list has been declared.

Is there a management quota here?
None. IIM Mumbai — the former NITIE, converted to the 21st IIM in 2023 — admits its MBA, MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM only through CAT under its published admission policy, with merit lists and waitlist movements declared on the official portal. There is no management quota, institute-level seat or sponsored category. As an IIM and an Institute of National Importance, it sits outside every state quota system as well. A paid 'IIM Mumbai seat' is a contradiction on its face.
IIM Mumbai — NITIE until its 2023 conversion into the 21st IIM — runs three two-year programmes from its Powai campus: the flagship MBA, the MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management that carries the old NITIE legacy, and the MBA in Sustainability Management. All three admit through CAT and nothing else, and the institute’s own portal narrates the cycle publicly, from PI slot booking to waitlist movement.
What should an applicant plan for?
A CAT-first season and a fee step-up. For the 2026-28 batch the route was CAT 2025 with a 50% graduation bar (45% for SC/ST/PwD), an application fee of Rs 2,000 (Rs 1,000 for SC/ST/EWS/PwD), and a published gross fee of Rs 25,00,000 for two years plus a refundable Rs 50,000 caution deposit — up from the Rs 21.00 lakh gross quoted for the 2025 cycle. OSCM narrows eligibility to engineering and specified quantitative degrees, so read that bar before assuming the legacy programme is open to you.
As of 23 August 2026 the 2026-28 admission is closed with the merit list declared. If you are targeting the next cycle, the waitlist history is the useful signal: the 2025 cycle ran publicly to MBA wait list 6, so a waitlist position here is a live position, not a polite rejection.
Where does IIM Mumbai fit in a Mumbai shortlist?
At the top with SPJIMR, above the city’s private PGDM and university options, at a fee now in the same Rs 25 lakh band. The batch-of-2026 report posts an average CTC of Rs 31.4 LPA and a three-year average median of Rs 33.0 LPA across the combined 505-student batch. If CAT does not land you here, the honest Mumbai alternatives — and the routes that genuinely take other exams — are mapped in our Mumbai MBA guide and direct-admission city page. What does not exist is a quota: no management, sponsored or institute-level seat appears anywhere in the institute’s published process.

Questions, answered
- Does IIM Mumbai accept exams other than CAT for the MBA?
- For the two-year MBA, MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM, the official admissions page names CAT as the required examination — CAT 2025 for the 2026-28 batch. GMAT appears on the site only for international and executive routes, not the domestic two-year programmes.
- What is the IIM Mumbai MBA fee for 2026-28?
- Rs 25,00,000 gross for the two years plus a refundable caution deposit of Rs 50,000, with mess charges separate (payable a year in advance), per the official admissions page. Note the increase: the 2025 cycle quoted Rs 21.00 lakh gross. The application fee is Rs 2,000, or Rs 1,000 for SC/ST/EWS/PwD.
- Is there a management quota at IIM Mumbai?
- No. IIM Mumbai is an Institute of National Importance admitting only through CAT under a published admission policy, with merit and waitlist movement declared publicly. No management, sponsored or paid route exists, and the institute sits outside state quota systems entirely.
- Who is eligible for MBA-OSCM?
- A full-time engineering/technology degree with 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PwD), or a full-time degree in specified quantitative disciplines — M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Statistics, a five-year dual degree in Maths and Computing, or a four-year BS/B.Tech in Economics — per the official admissions page. The flagship MBA accepts any bachelor's degree at the same marks bars.
- What were IIM Mumbai's latest placement figures?
- Per the official Placement Report for the batch of 2026: average CTC Rs 31.4 LPA, highest Rs 71.4 LPA, mean of the top 10% Rs 47.5 LPA, across 505 students (MBA, MBA-OSCM and MBA-SM combined) with 208 recruiting companies and 179 pre-placement offers. The report quotes an average median of Rs 33.0 LPA across the past three years rather than a single-year median.
- Do waitlists actually move at IIM Mumbai?
- Yes, publicly. The 2025 cycle's admissions page tracked movement up to MBA wait list 6 and MBA-SM wait list 7. If you are waitlisted, the official portal — not an agent — is where your position changes.
