Low Score in CUET 2026? Band-by-Band Options Guide

A low CUET score narrows your central university options. It does not decide whether you study a degree this year. NTA published scorecards on 23 June 2026, and the decisions that matter now sit inside one window: DU’s CSAS Phase II closes at 11:59 pm on 11 July, and the honest non-CUET routes have their own July deadlines.

This guide works band by band. Find your total in the three or four papers a university actually counts, read your row, and act. First question: your score is out of what?

Most “is my score low” panic starts with a number missing its denominator.

Every CUET paper has 50 questions at +5 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one, so each paper is scored out of 250. You could sit up to five papers. Three papers max out at 750, four at 1000, five at 1250. All of this is in NTA’s information bulletin.

So when an article announces that “below 600 is a low score”, ask: out of what? A candidate with three papers who scored 600 out of 750 has done better than one with 950 out of 1250. Same “low score” table, opposite verdicts.

Universities do not use your grand total either. DU’s Bulletin of Information sets a subject combination for every programme, usually one language plus three other papers, and states that “merit will be based on the best CUET score obtained” from that combination. For most DU programmes that means a merit score out of 1000. For several B.Sc programmes it is three domain papers, out of 750. The “out of 800” totals floating around this week match no published DU rule.

Two more things your scorecard will not tell you. There are no passing marks, at UG or PG: universities set closing scores through their own rounds, and every “CUET passing marks” table online is fiction. And there is no official raw-marks-to-percentile chart, so treat any tidy conversion table as a guess. Cutoffs themselves move with applicants, seats and paper difficulty, which is all anyone can truthfully say about them.

Below 200: stop refreshing cutoff lists

At this level, waiting for a central university list is the expensive mistake. Move to the routes that never wanted CUET.

DU School of Open Learning. DU’s own bulletin states SOL undergraduate admission “are based on the merit score obtained in Class XII”. A Delhi University degree, no entrance score, dates on sol.du.ac.in.
NCWEB. For women residents of Delhi: BA Programme and B.Com, again on Class 12 merit per the DU bulletin, through ncwebadmission.uod.ac.in.
IGNOU’s July 2026 session. The July session prospectus is live on ignou.ac.in. The closing date sits on the admission portal and has been extended in past cycles, but do not plan around an extension.
Private universities on Class 12 marks or their own tests. This is where BBA, B.Com and BCA aspirants have the most room. Sharda University, for one, runs its own SUAT test with no national percentile asked.

If you have already paid the CSAS registration fee, complete the preferences anyway. Allocation costs nothing extra and a surprise in a late round hurts nobody.

200 to 300: run two tracks at once

Track one is CSAS, played properly. DU is offering 73 bachelor’s programmes and 150 BA Programme combinations this year, and closing scores vary enormously across colleges and combinations. Fill preferences generously before 11:59 pm on 11 July, including off-campus colleges, evening colleges and BA Programme combinations you would genuinely accept. The simulated rank on 12 July at 5 pm shows where you stand while the preference-change window is still open, till 4:59 pm on 13 July.

One warning here: do not pick preferences from aggregator “lowest cutoff” tables. Several of the numbers ranking on Google this week carry no year, no denominator, or figures like “28 to 400 marks” that mean nothing. DU publishes its own allocation data on admission.uod.ac.in. Use that.

Track two is a live non-CUET application, because a 250 total may convert to nothing in allocation. One application to SOL, IGNOU or a private university from our entrance exams comparison costs little and removes the October panic.

300 and above: this is a real CSAS position

You are not choosing between DU and nothing. You are choosing preference order.

Put the programmes you actually want first, however unlikely, then the realistic middle, then genuine acceptances at the bottom. Once a round allocates you a seat, DU’s upgrade option lets you chase higher preferences in the next round without losing the seat you paid for.

Beyond DU, register wherever your score and interests point. BHU has published its undergraduate registration notice on admission.bhu.ac.in, with Central Admission Portal registration expected to run through July. JNU, Jamia and Allahabad run their own portals and calendars. There is no centralised CUET counselling, so every university you skip registering at is a door you closed yourself.

What agents won’t tell you

July is peak season for “guaranteed seat” calls. Nobody can reserve a CUET seat: DU allocates purely on merit score and your saved preference order, on a portal you operate yourself. The claim that spot rounds slash cutoffs “by up to 40 percent” appears in no university document we could find, and the “5 to 20 percent relaxation for reserved categories” is equally invented, since reservation works through separate seats, not score discounts. If any later vacancy round opens, it opens on the same official portal, free. A stranger asking for money to access it is describing a fraud, not a service.

The honest summary: below 200, act on non-CUET routes today. Between 200 and 300, play CSAS fully but hedge. Above 300, order your preferences like they decide your college, because they do.
