MBA Spot Admission 2026: How Vacant Seats Get Filled After Counselling
Nobody can sell you an MBA spot admission. Spot rounds are the tail end of official counselling: after the allotment rounds close, state cells display the seats nobody confirmed, and colleges fill them by merit on schedules that peak in August and September. The seat, the fee and the degree are identical to what a round-one candidate gets.
Because the phrase also gets used as bait, one line of housekeeping first. The legitimate ways into an MBA without a top entrance rank are covered in our direct MBA admission guide. This page covers something narrower: where unclaimed seats actually go in 2026, state by state, and how to be in the right queue when they do.
| Route | Who runs it | Where it is announced | Status on 7 July 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra CAP vacancy and institute-level rounds | State CET Cell | cetcell.mahacet.org, then each college’s own website | Registration open 2 to 12 July, allotment-round schedule “will be declared shortly” (Admission Notice No. 1, 2 July 2026) |
| Gujarat centralized MBA admission | ACPC | gujacpc.admissions.nic.in | 2026-27 registration opened 25 May 2026, and the 2025-26 cycle was formally closed “after online rounds” (ACPC portal) |
| Telangana TG ICET counselling | State council of higher education | tgicet.nic.in | Portal showed “website is closed” between cycles when we checked |
| Karnataka PGCET counselling | Karnataka Examinations Authority | kea.kar.nic.in | Portal did not respond when we checked, confirm directly before acting |
| University-run spot notices | Each university itself | Its own admissions page | Manipal’s official vacant-seats page listed only M.Sc programs, no MBA |
That table is the whole legitimate market. Everything else sold under this keyword is a pitch.
What a spot round is, and what it is not
Three different things get called spot admission, and the differences decide what you should pay.
Vacancy rounds inside counselling. Between allotment rounds, the admission portal displays institute-wise vacant seats and registered candidates fill fresh options against them. In Maharashtra the later stages of this get called CAP Round 4 or ACAP on coaching sites. Neither name appears in the official notice, which simply refers to a fourth CAP round.
Institute-level rounds after counselling. Seats still empty when CAP ends revert to the colleges, which must advertise the schedule and seat count on their own websites and admit by merit among eligible registered candidates. Maharashtra’s version of this, including the separate 20% institute-level quota, has a written rulebook, which we unpack in our institute-level quota guide.
University spot notices. Deemed and private universities publish their own vacant-seat announcements. MAHE Manipal’s page is the clean example: a public list of programs, a free registration form, and two warnings worth framing. “Mere registration does NOT guarantee admission.” And the university “has NOT authorised any agents / middlemen / admission consultants” for any admission process.
Why do seats go vacant at all? Because outside the top tier, sanctioned intake outruns confirmed candidates every single year. Top colleges close in round one. The long tail does not, and that tail is where spot rounds live.
Maharashtra: the only dates that are actually official
The CET Cell signed Admission Notice No. 1 on 2 July 2026. These are its dates, and it marks even these as provisional.
| Activity | Dates | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Online CAP registration and document upload | 2 to 12 July 2026, 5 PM | Admission Notice No. 1 |
| Document verification (E-Scrutiny or physical) | 3 to 13 July 2026 | Admission Notice No. 1 |
| Provisional merit list | 15 July 2026 | Admission Notice No. 1 |
| Grievance window | 16 to 18 July 2026 | Admission Notice No. 1 |
| Final merit list | 20 July 2026 | Admission Notice No. 1 |
| Option filling, allotment rounds, vacancy displays, institute-level rounds | ”Will be declared shortly”, expected August to September going by past cycles | Admission Notice No. 1 (item 10) |
Now the corrections, because the pages ranking for this query disagree with the notice on money and dates.
If you registered for MBA/MMS CET 2026, admission registration costs you nothing. The fee applies only to candidates entering on CAT, CMAT, XAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT scores without a CET registration: Rs 1,500 for General, OMS and J&K/Ladakh migrant candidates, Rs 1,300 for Maharashtra’s reserved categories and PWD candidates, plus orphan and transgender candidates. The Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,000 figures on several coaching sites are stale, and the Rs 5,000 NRI fee one of them quotes matches nothing in the notice. NRI, OCI, PIO, CIWGC and foreign candidates do not use this form at all. They go through fn.mahacet.org. One widely copied schedule also shows document verification from 3 June. Typo. The notice says 3 July.
Eligibility is a three-year bachelor’s degree with 50% (45% for reserved, EWS and PWD candidates of Maharashtra only) and a non-zero score in an accepted exam. And the single most important line in the whole notice, for spot-round hopefuls: for institutional quota and post-CAP vacant seats, it is “Mandatory to get registered, documents verified and confirmation of application”. Miss the July window and no September vacancy can save you. Unconfirmed applications are dropped from the merit lists for CAP and non-CAP alike.
One more caution. The college-wise vacancy tables ranking on this keyword today are last year’s numbers. This year’s appear on the official admission portal round by round, from August.
The other states, briefly
Gujarat. ACPC opened 2026-27 MBA registration on 25 May 2026. The portal’s notice board is where each phase lands, and the phrase to watch is the one it used to close last year’s cycle: closure “after online rounds”. What follows the online rounds is the vacancy phase. Rules and fees sit at acpc.gujarat.gov.in.
Telangana. TG ICET counselling runs in phases of web options on tgicet.nic.in. The portal was closed between cycles when we checked, so treat any 2026 phase dates you read elsewhere as unconfirmed until they appear there.
Karnataka. KEA runs PGCET counselling for MBA. We could not reach the KEA portal on 7 July 2026, so we will not quote its schedule. Verify on kea.kar.nic.in.
The consultancy pages promising “direct admission with management quota” in Kolkata and other metros are not a fourth route. One of the biggest ones admits, in its own disclaimer, that many colleges on its list have no management quota seats at all.
Documents to carry on the day
Spot and institute-level rounds run on compressed schedules, sometimes a single day between the vacancy display and the reporting deadline. Keep one folder ready:
- Graduation marksheets and degree or provisional certificate
- Class X and XII marksheets
- Scorecard of MAH-CET or the accepted exam you used
- CAP registration receipt-cum-acknowledgement (Maharashtra) or the state equivalent
- Caste, caste-validity, non-creamy-layer or EWS certificates where claimed. In Maharashtra, non-creamy-layer certificates must be valid up to 31 March 2027
- Photo ID, passport photographs, and a way to pay the college online
On originals: the UGC’s October 2018 notification prohibits any institution from keeping your original certificates in custody. They verify, they return, you keep the originals.
What agents won’t tell you: the vacancy list they claim special access to is public, published free on the official portal before every round. The “spot seat” they are blocking for a fee is one you can apply to directly, at the college’s advertised fee, with zero commission. And the same-day pressure is manufactured: the schedule is printed in the college’s own notice. An agent’s entire product is your not having read the notice.
How to tell an official spot round from a pitch
- The announcement sits on a government portal (nic.in, mahacet.org, a state ACPC) or the college’s own domain. A WhatsApp forward is not an announcement.
- There is a schedule and a seat count in writing, before any money moves.
- The fee is the published, regulated fee, paid to the institution against a receipt. In Maharashtra, institute-level admittees pay the FRA-approved fee, nothing above it.
- Nobody asks for cash, a third-party transfer, or a “blocking” payment. Manipal’s warning generalises: no university has authorised agents for its vacant seats.
If the spot rounds pass you by
Then the question becomes which legitimate route is still open at your score. Our guide to management quota for MBA separates the real, fee-regulated version from the version agents invent, and if your shortlist is city-first, start with the verified profiles in our Mumbai MBA colleges guide. Some PGDM institutes open application cycles later than the state calendars, so check institute sites before writing the year off.
And know your exit rights before you pay anyone. Under the UGC fee refund policy currently in force, cancellations up to 30 September get a full refund, cancellations up to 31 October get everything back minus a processing fee of at most Rs 1,000, and later withdrawals follow a published sliding scale. Caution money comes back in full. A college that tells a spot-round admit “no refunds, the session has started” is quoting a rule that does not exist.
Message us on WhatsApp with your score, category and city, and ask which vacancy rounds are genuinely still open for your profile. If the honest answer is none this cycle, that is the answer you will get.
Good to know
Questions, answered
- What is CAP Round 4 or the ACAP round in Maharashtra?
- Unofficial names for the vacancy-filling stage after the main CAP allotments. The CET Cell's 2 July 2026 admission notice refers to a fourth CAP round and to subsequent institute-level rounds, where colleges admit registered candidates against seats left vacant after CAP. The exact 2026 schedule for these rounds had not been declared as of 7 July 2026.
- Who is eligible for spot round MBA admission in 2026?
- In Maharashtra, anyone registered on the CAP portal with documents verified and application confirmed. The official notice states that registration and confirmation are mandatory even for candidates aiming only at institutional quota or post-CAP vacant seats. Other states set eligibility in their own counselling notifications, always published on the official portal.
- Which MBA colleges have vacant seats after CAP rounds?
- It changes every round and every year. The CET Cell displays institute-wise vacancy positions on the official admission portal before each vacancy round, and colleges must advertise their institute-level seats on their own websites. Any college-wise vacancy table you find on a coaching site today is last year's data.
- Can non-Maharashtra students get MBA admission through MAH CET CAP?
- Yes, under All India candidature. The official notice requires a minimum three-year bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks and a non-zero positive score in MAH-CET, CAT, CMAT, XAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT. The 45% relaxation applies only to reserved-category, EWS and PWD candidates of Maharashtra.
- What is the CAP registration fee for MBA admission 2026?
- Nothing, if you registered for MBA/MMS CET 2026. Candidates applying on CAT, CMAT, XAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT scores without a CET registration pay Rs 1,500 (General, OMS, J&K and Ladakh migrants) or Rs 1,300 (reserved categories and PWD of Maharashtra, orphan and transgender candidates), per the CET Cell notice of 2 July 2026. Fees are non-refundable.
- What happens if I miss a CAP round? Is CAP mandatory?
- If you never register, you are out of both CAP and the non-CAP process: the official notice says unconfirmed applications are excluded from the merit lists for both. If you registered but missed an allotment round, you can still be considered in later vacancy and institute-level rounds, subject to that year's rules on the portal.
- Is MBA admission through a spot round valid for jobs?
- Yes. A spot-round seat is a sanctioned seat at the same college with the same degree and the same approved fee. What is not valid is a seat arranged outside the official process for an extra payment: that is capitation, and colleges cancel such admissions when discovered.
- Can I get a refund if I cancel after taking a spot-round seat?
- Yes, within limits. The UGC fee refund policy in force gives a full refund for cancellations up to 30 September and a refund minus a processing fee of at most Rs 1,000 up to 31 October. After that a sliding scale from the October 2018 UGC notification applies. Caution money must be returned in full, and no institution may keep your original certificates.
