Direct MBA Admission in Kolkata 2026: The CAT Ceiling, the State-University Floor and Two Honest Middle Doors

Direct MBA admission in Kolkata 2026: IIM Calcutta's CAT route at Rs 27L, IISWBM's CAT+GD-PI at Rs 8.3L, IMI Kolkata's four-exam door at Rs 14.98L, and Globsyn's five-exam-plus-own-test route.

The short answer

As of 14 September 2026, direct MBA admission in Kolkata runs through four published doors: IIM Calcutta's CAT-only route (Rs 27,00,000 printed fee), IISWBM's CAT-plus-interview MBA at Rs 8,30,000 total, IMI Kolkata's CAT/XAT/GMAT/CMAT PGDM at Rs 14,98,000, and Globsyn's five-exams-plus-own-test PGDM. None of the four publishes a management-quota row.

Kolkata’s direct-admission answer comes in three bands. At the top sits the country’s oldest IIM and its printed Rs 27 lakh fee. At the bottom sits a state-university MBA department whose own fee break-up totals Rs 8.30 lakh. Between them, two private doors — one national-brand PGDM, one local AICTE PGDM — take four and five entrance exams respectively, so a weak or missing CAT score does not end the conversation. This page maps all four doors from documents opened on 14 September 2026, and shows what the illegal version looks like by contrast.

The four doors, in honesty order

Door one — IIM Calcutta’s printed CAT route. The city’s ceiling is a merit ceiling: CAT, minimum section-wise and overall percentiles, a composite-score shortlist for the Writing Ability Test and Personal Interview, then a final composite where the interview carries 48 of 100 points. The fee document prints Rs 27,00,000 across six terms — Term I and IV at Rs 5,40,000, the rest at Rs 4,05,000 — plus a refundable Rs 20,000 caution deposit, with the Rs 1,00,000 offer-acceptance adjusted into Term I. The 2023 placement report the institute itself links records 100% placements, 190 firms, 573 offers, average Rs 35.07 lakh and median Rs 33.67 lakh. There is no management, NRI, institute-level or donation route anywhere in the policy — and offers cannot even be deferred.

Door two — IISWBM’s state-university MBA. The city’s floor is a government one: the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, running University of Calcutta MBAs since 1954. Its AICTE disclosure publishes exactly one admission procedure — CAT-qualified, then group discussion and personal interview — against 120 sanctioned MBA (Day) seats. Its own fee break-up, a scanned sheet we read from the rendered document today, totals Rs 8,30,000 for the two-year MBA (Day): Rs 4,36,000 in year one and Rs 3,94,000 in year two, caution deposits inside. The MBA-HRM variant totals Rs 6,30,000. For a student who wants a university MBA at a government price, this is the honest floor of the city.

Door three — IMI Kolkata’s four-exam PGDM. The national-brand middle: CAT, XAT, GMAT or CMAT, a 50% graduation bar, then a Personal Interview under the institute’s Admission Bulletin. The published 2026-28 self-sponsored fee is Rs 14,98,000 across six trimesters — tuition Rs 12,08,000 with learning materials, library, activities, IT and alumni membership itemised, plus a Rs 15,000 refundable security deposit — and the application costs Rs 2,250 (free if you have already applied to IMI New Delhi). The placement evidence is unusually transparent: a student-by-student, Director-signed offer list for 2023-24 naming Deloitte, PwC, ICICI Bank, Dabur and Wipro among the employers — though no summarised average or median CTC, and we do not borrow aggregator figures.

Door four — Globsyn’s five-exams-plus-own-test PGDM. The city’s most accessible policy: any one of CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT or ATMA, then the institute’s own 60-minute Globsyn Aptitude Test with a ten-minute essay and video profile, then a Personal Interview — a 100-mark composite with selection printed at 50 marks and above. The page shows Batch 2026-28 admissions open today. Two disclosures keep the page honest: the PGDM fee is published nowhere reachable (we asked the page, not a rumour), and the placement page’s figures — 1,000+ opportunities, average Rs 6.85 lakh, highest Rs 16.42 lakh for 2023-25 — are the institute’s own published claims.

The missing quota row — and why it protects you

Kolkata agents sell ‘IIM seats’ and ‘university donation seats’ in the same breath, which is the tell: the two institutions could not be structured more differently, and neither prints anything to sell. IIM Calcutta’s policy reserves seats by law and nothing else. IISWBM’s disclosure prints its management-quota application and admission tables with no numbers against this programme. IMI Kolkata’s one separate category — company-sponsored candidates — goes through the same selection process, with the employer paying fees and no placement assistance attached. Globsyn points applicants to AICTE’s eligibility and refund policies before they apply. The absence of a quota row is not a gap in our research; it is the finding.

Before you pay anyone: the five-point check

Run every Kolkata offer through the same five questions. Which printed seat category is this — and can the college show it on its own site? Does the price match the published fee document (Rs 27,00,000, Rs 8,30,000, Rs 14,98,000 — or Globsyn’s written quote from its own office)? Is there a selection event with your name in it — CAT, GD-PI, GAT, interview? Does the receipt come from the institution’s account, never a personal one? And can the college’s published mailbox confirm the offer in writing? Five yeses is a real door. One no is a script.

How Udaan helps in Kolkata

We tell you which of the four doors your score actually opens — whether CAT 2026 (registration closes tomorrow, 15 September, 5 pm) should carry your whole plan, whether IISWBM’s Rs 8.30 lakh route beats a private PGDM at twice the price for your goals, and when IMI Kolkata’s multi-exam window or Globsyn’s own test is the realistic door this season. And if someone offers you a Kolkata seat with a ‘donation’ attached, we will show you the page that proves the door they are selling does not exist.

Straight answers

Is direct MBA admission legal in Kolkata?
Yes — when it is the college's own published process. All four verified Kolkata doors are direct applications to the institution: an entrance score, a written selection process, a merit result, a receipt from the institute. What is illegal is the counterfeit version — a seat sold by a middleman above the published fee — and the simplest test in this city is that none of the four colleges prints a quota row for anyone to sell.
Which management quota exists for MBA in Kolkata?
On the published record: none at these four institutions. IIM Calcutta's admission policy is the only door it has — CAT, then WAT and PI on published weights, with no management, NRI, institute-level or donation route anywhere in the document. IISWBM's AICTE mandatory disclosure publishes one admission procedure (CAT, then GD-PI) against 120 sanctioned seats. IMI Kolkata and Globsyn publish no quota row either. The wider West Bengal picture — including the vacant-seat rank-card rule at some state colleges — is on our state quota page.
Can I get an MBA seat in Kolkata without CAT?
Yes, at two of the four. IMI Kolkata accepts CAT, XAT, GMAT or CMAT. Globsyn accepts CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT or ATMA and adds its own 60-minute Globsyn Aptitude Test for everyone — so a candidate with no national score can still be tested this season. IIM Calcutta and IISWBM are CAT-only. What nobody in the city offers is an untested seat.
What does an MBA in Kolkata actually cost?
The verified ladder is wide. IISWBM's MBA (Day) costs Rs 8,30,000 in total across two years per the institute's own fee break-up. IMI Kolkata's PGDM costs Rs 14,98,000 for 2026-28 including a Rs 15,000 refundable deposit, plus a Rs 2,250 application. IIM Calcutta prints Rs 27,00,000 across six terms plus a Rs 20,000 refundable caution deposit. Globsyn does not publish its PGDM fee on any reachable page — we say so rather than guess.
Is it too late for a 2026 Kolkata MBA seat?
For IIM Calcutta, the 2026 question was settled by CAT 2025; the 2027 door is CAT 2026, and registration closes at 5 pm on 15 September 2026 — tomorrow as this page is written. IISWBM's and IMI Kolkata's cycles follow their own bulletins, and Globsyn shows Batch 2026-28 admissions open on its page today. Ask each admissions office for the live phase, and treat any September 'confirmed IIM Calcutta seat' call as what it is: a fraud script.
An agent offers an IIM Calcutta or IISWBM seat for a 'donation'. Real?
No. IIM Calcutta's policy contains no donation route and its offers cannot even be deferred. IISWBM's own disclosure lists its management-quota tables with no numbers against this programme. The fee receipts for both come from the institute after a CAT-driven selection, never from a middleman. Keep your money, and report the approach to the institute's published mailbox.
