Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur (VGSoM)

Vinod Gupta School of Management is the IIT system’s original management school — set up in 1993, before most private B-schools on the usual shortlists existed — and it runs the most readable admission paperwork we have mapped: a printed CAT percentile table, a printed final-score formula, a printed fee PDF to the rupee, and a printed placement report with batch, participation and offer counts. Kharagpur is 120 km from Kolkata, and the school draws on the full IIT Kharagpur campus.

Who can apply — the degree rule that filters most applicants out

VGSoM’s eligibility is narrower than a typical MBA’s. The qualifying degree must be a four-year bachelor’s in engineering, technology or pharmacy (a five-year dual degree counts as equivalent) or a master’s in Science, Economics or Commerce with Mathematics or Statistics at bachelor’s level. A plain three-year BA, BCom or BSc on its own does not meet the printed criteria — the single most important line on this page for a commerce or arts graduate shortlisting schools. The marks bar is 60% (or 6.5 CGPA) for General/EWS/OBC and 55% (6.0 CGPA) for SC/ST/PwD, and final-year candidates may apply with provisional admission — the completion certificate is due by 31 May 2026 and the final marksheet by 31 October 2026.

The selection machine, as printed

Shortlisting for the Written Aptitude Test and Personal Interview needs a minimum CAT 2025 overall percentile: General/EWS 90, OBC 81, SC/ST/PwD 60. Above the bar, a CAT scaled score out of 20 plus an Application Rating — academics from Class 10 onward, selected professional qualifications (CA, CS, CMA, CFA, FRM) and work experience — decides who gets called, with four extra marks for every female applicant under the Gender Diversity Factor. Two quirks worth knowing before you plan: the work-experience score peaks around two years of experience and decays to zero beyond five, and the WAT-PI is mandatory and in person across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata in March 2026.

The final list is Application Rating 20 + CAT 2025 40 (VARC 20, DILR 10, QA 10) + WAT-PI 40, with ten Gender Diversity Factor marks for women at this stage. Offers then run on merit in each category across six dated rounds from 1-5 May 2026 — the first round alone releasing 200 offers — down to 30 June 2026. The application itself costs Rs 1,600 (Rs 800 for SC/ST/PwD) on IIT Kharagpur’s ERP portal, which opens one day after CAT results are declared — for the 2027-29 batch, that means the window opens right after CAT 2026 results in early January 2027, and it closes within weeks. This is the same post-results trap we flag on the after-CAT registration map: if you wait for a reminder, the window is already half gone.

What it costs — printed to the rupee

The official 2026-28 fee PDF prices the two years at Rs 13,03,924: Semester 1 costs Rs 4,12,981 at admission, then Rs 2,96,081, Rs 2,98,781 and Rs 2,96,081. Tuition is Rs 2,50,000 per semester; hostel seat rent, a Rs 14,500-per-semester mess advance and institute charges sit inside the totals, as does a refundable Rs 1,00,000 International Immersion Programme charge. One footnote matters more than any headline: tuition is waived for SC/ST/PwD students, which removes Rs 10,00,000 of tuition across the four semesters. Placements — the school’s own report, read properly

The Final Placement Report 2023-25 records a batch of 142, of whom 139 participated and all 139 were placed, with 36 pre-placement offers. Highest CTC Rs 37.63 lakh, average Rs 22.75 lakh, median Rs 22.15 lakh; the top 10% averaged Rs 34.29 lakh. The domain split tells you who this school is for: strategy and consulting took 45% of offers, operations 20%, analytics 15%. The report is published by the school rather than audited by a third party (unlike BIM Trichy’s CRISIL-audited numbers), so apply the checks in our placement-report guide — but note it prints participation and PPO counts, which most unaudited reports skip.

Is there a management quota at VGSoM?

No such channel exists in print. One route runs the entire process: CAT, Application Rating, mandatory WAT-PI, merit-list offers within each reservation category. The only differentiated doors are affirmative action — the Gender Diversity Factor marks — and the overseas GMAT route through the institute’s International Relations office. If anyone offers you a paid VGSoM seat, they are selling something the school does not publish; the one-line verification is an email to the school’s own admissions mailbox.
