Department of Management Sciences, IIT Kanpur (DoMS IIT Kanpur)

The Department of Management Sciences at IIT Kanpur — the erstwhile Department of Industrial and Management Engineering — runs one of the strictest printed eligibility filters among the IIT MBAs we have mapped: an 80-percentile CAT bar is only the third filter an applicant has to clear. The prize is a general-management MBA from an IIT with a printed 1:6 faculty-student ratio and 110 MBA students in the current highlights.

Three filters before the CAT bar even matters

First, Mathematics: the bachelor’s degree must entail at least three years of education after 10+2 with Mathematics as one of the subjects — and the FAQ goes further, stating a student without Mathematics in 10+2 is not eligible. Second, school marks: 65% in each of Class X and Class XII for General/EWS/OBC applicants, a condition most IIMs do not print. Third, graduation: 60% aggregate (CPI 6.0/10) for General/EWS/OBC and 50% (CPI 5.0) for SC/ST/PwD. Only then does the CAT 2025 overall percentile — 80 for General/EWS/OBC, 55 for SC/ST/PwD — come into play. One mercy: the department prints in its FAQ that there are no sectional CAT cut-offs at any stage. (One honest disclosure: the SC/ST sentence on the process page still says “CAT-2024” inside the 2026-28 criteria — a stale-year typo on the official page; the batch header governs.)

The process, as printed

Applications ran on the institute’s Pingala portal from 25 December 2025 to 10 February 2026 (after an extension), fee Rs 2,000 for General/EWS/OBC(NCL) and Rs 1,000 for SC/ST/DAP. Shortlists for GDPI were tentatively dated 20-25 February 2026, and the GD-PI itself ran 13-16 March 2026 at the Kanpur campus and the IITK Outreach Centre in Noida. The final composite is printed in the FAQ: scaled CAT 2025 score 20%, Class X+XII academics 20%, work experience 10%, Personal Interview 35%, UG performance 15%, with a gender-diversity provision for women and the score capped at 100. Two structural honesty points worth quoting verbatim in spirit: the GN/EWS/OBC(NCL) and SC/ST groups are never compared at any stage, and misrepresentation at any stage means summary rejection with no fee refunded. Four offer lists ran into mid-2026 before the institute declared the 2026-27 process complete — for the 2027-29 window, expect the same late-December opening after CAT 2026 results.

The two things we could not verify — and will not guess

The fee. The FAQ answers the fee question with “fee details are released before every semester” and points to the Fee and Assistantship page — which today links only a 2025-26 first-semester circular printing undergraduate (JEE) figures. No current MBA-specific total exists on the reachable pages, so this profile quotes none: ask the department for the current MBA fee circular in writing. Placements. The MBA placement-process page carries no statistics table, and no audited report is linked. Same rule: ask for the latest signed report, and read it with the placement-report checklist.

Is there a management quota at IIT Kanpur?

Nothing in print. One CAT route, printed bars, printed weights, printed reservation norms — and a printed warning that hidden or falsified information ends the candidature with no refund. That is the whole picture.
