The Department of Management Studies at IIT Roorkee is the cheapest verified IIT MBA door we have mapped: the institute’s own 2026-27 fee PDF prices the full two years at Rs 9,74,200 with hostel and mess included. The department was established in 1998 by the then University of Roorkee — the institution itself traces to 1847 — and runs a 95-seat residential MBA with dual specialisations across Finance, Marketing, Operations, Information Systems and Human Resource Management.

The two doors in print

For regular applicants there is exactly one entrance: CAT 2025, with shortlisting for interview invitations based on CAT performance. The eligibility bar is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) — no four-year-degree restriction, no sectional CAT bars printed, and final-year students are explicitly welcome (proof of passing by 30 September 2026).

The second door is unique among the profiles we have mapped: JEE or JEE (Advanced) qualified IIT graduates with CGPA 7.0 or above are exempted from CAT and called directly for the Personal Interview, joining one common merit list with the CAT stream. If your family includes an IIT graduate weighing an MBA, this is the only printed CAT-free door at an IIT we have verified.

Interviews ran in March 2026 at five centres — Roorkee, Greater Noida, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata — and the final merit weighs CAT 2025, the interview and work experience. After the first offers, the institute’s MBA admission page lists six waitlist rounds, a provisionally-offered list under a Golden Girl Scheme for Female candidates and a printed vacant-seat filling process; those documents sit on the institute intranet, unreachable from our host on 16 September 2026, so confirm their current rules with the department directly.

The Session 2026-27 MBA fee structure prints semester totals of Rs 2,55,550, Rs 2,39,050, Rs 2,40,550 and Rs 2,39,050 for General/EWS/OBC students in the dining-and-residing category: Rs 9,74,200 for two years, covering tuition (Rs 1,00,000 per semester), other institute charges (Rs 1,00,000 per semester), hostel, semester charges and a Rs 21,750-per-semester mess advance. SC/ST/PwD students pay zero tuition, which cuts the two-year total to Rs 5,74,200. Set that against the all-IIM fee table — where the cheapest printed IIM total is Rs 17,90,000 — and against our budget bands: this is a genuine sub-Rs-10-lakh IIT MBA, in print, with the paperwork to prove it.

Placements and the quota question

No current audited placement report was reachable from our host on 16 September 2026 — the placement-reports section serves no report documents from here, and the department’s recent notices are intranet-gated. We will not quote third-party salary figures; ask the department for its latest signed report and read it with the placement-report checklist.

On the quota question the printed record is unambiguous: CAT shortlisting plus the IIT-graduate exemption, merit lists, Government of India reservation — and nothing else. The waitlist rounds, the Golden Girl list and the vacant-seat process are all institute-run and merit-bound.
