AIMA, which has run MAT since 1988, says 600+ B-schools accept the score. The number is real, but useless on its own, because almost none of the pages ranking for this keyword tell you what MAT result opens which door, and several pad their lists with institutes that do not accept MAT at all. This page maps only what colleges publish on their own websites, verified this week.

MAT 2026: dates, fee and pattern, straight from AIMA

The September 2026 window is open now. Per mat.aima.in: paper-based test (PBT) on 13 September, registration closing 7 September; computer-based test (CBT) on 20 September, registration closing 14 September. The fee is Rs 2,300 for one mode and Rs 4,000 for both, so ignore the Rs 2,100 and Rs 2,200 figures still circulating on listicles.

The test is 150 questions across five sections in 120 minutes. MAT runs four times a year, in February, May, September and December; December 2026 dates are expected on the AIMA site later in the year. Scores are valid for one year, and each session issues its own scorecard, so a weak May attempt can simply be replaced by a September one. Eligibility details sit on AIMA’s registration pages.

Score or percentile? The bridge nobody builds

MAT reports a composite score on a 200 to 800 scale, with a percentile printed alongside, per AIMA’s own score interpretation document. The confusion starts because colleges publish bars in different units. Christ asks for a score of 600. VIT’s waiver ladder runs on scores from 760 up. BIMTECH publishes a percentile, the 70th. Portal pages flatten all of this into one fake “90 to 95 percentile” tier, then fill it with their advertisers.

AIMA publishes no session-wise score-to-percentile conversion table, so anyone selling you an exact mapping is guessing. The honest version, built only from published bars:

Names that should not be on your MAT list

The top-ranking pages for this keyword put MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR and MICA against “MAT cutoffs” of 700+. All three are fiction. MDI’s published selection criteria for the 2026-28 PGP use CAT 2025, weighted at 70%. SPJIMR shortlists on CAT or GMAT plus profile. MICA requires its own MICAT along with a CAT, XAT or GMAT score. Also wrongly listed on this keyword: FORE School of Management (its admission overview names CAT, XAT and GMAT only), NMIMS (NMAT is mandatory, via nmat.nmims.edu), IIMs and FMS Delhi (CAT, via iimcat.ac.in), and JBIMS, whose MMS seats fill through Maharashtra’s CET Cell and CAP rounds.

Even the size of the MAT universe gets invented: pages on this keyword claim 264, 550, 1,218, 1,330 and 1,400+ accepting colleges, two of those counts on a single page. AIMA’s own figure is 600+.

What agents won’t tell you

The fake lists are built to generate calls, not admissions. Dressing MDI and SPJIMR in “MAT cutoff 700+” rows next to real NIRF ranks makes a WhatsApp counsellor sound informed, and by the time you learn the institute’s own criteria PDF names CAT only, you have paid for “profile evaluation” against seats your exam cannot reach. MAT vs CMAT, honestly

CMAT is run by NTA once a year (the 2026 exam was held on 25 January 2026), and NTA states the score is accepted by all AICTE-approved institutions, university departments and affiliated colleges. That blanket acceptance is why BIMTECH’s flagship PGDM takes CMAT but not MAT, while MAT gets you only its insurance and retail programmes.

So the honest comparison: if your targets are AICTE PGDM institutes, CMAT does more work per attempt. MAT’s edge is frequency and recovery, four windows a year against CMAT’s one, which matters most if you missed CAT and are rebuilding a plan. Where MAT and direct routes combine

The best use of a MAT score in 2026 is at universities running their own published selection, where the exam is one input rather than the gate. Christ takes your 600+ score and then runs its own assessment and interview. VIT lets you skip its VITBEE entirely by submitting MAT, and pays you for a high score through its waiver ladder. Jaipuria and XIME weigh the exam at roughly a third of selection, with GD, interview and academics deciding the rest. None of these has a side door, so nobody can sell you one.

How to build your MAT college list

Register for September on mat.aima.in before 7 September (PBT) or 14 September (CBT).
For every college on your list, find the exam-acceptance line on its own admissions page, and note whether the bar is a score or a percentile.
Check which programme accepts MAT, not just which college. BIMTECH is the proof that these differ.
If a college appears on a portal list but its own site names other exams, drop it. The site wins.
