CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP: Which MBA Exam Should You Actually Take?
CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP compared: attempts, difficulty, colleges unlocked, and which exam fits your target list. A decision framework, not hype.
The short answer
As of July 2026, these exams open different doors rather than difficulty levels of one test. CAT is the only route to the IIMs and top PGDM institutes, SNAP opens only Symbiosis, NMAT primarily opens NMIMS (which counts your first attempt only), and XAT serves the XLRI tier. Choose by target college first; none of them has a paid backup.
Four exams, four different jobs
The four big MBA entrance exams are not interchangeable, and they are not four difficulty settings of the same test. CAT is the national exam that opens the IIMs and nearly every top PGDM institute. XAT is XLRI’s exam, accepted well beyond XLRI itself. NMAT and SNAP are university gates: NMAT primarily serves NMIMS, and SNAP serves only Symbiosis. Asking “which is easiest” before asking “which colleges do I want” is how aspirants end up holding a decent score that none of their target colleges accepts.
| Exam | Attempts per cycle | Main doors it opens | What follows the exam |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAT 2026 | One sitting a year | IIMs and most top PGDM institutes; also accepted at Great Lakes, Welingkar, KJ Somaiya, and JGU at the 50th percentile (official admissions pages) | Each institute’s own shortlist, then GD, WAT or PI rounds |
| XAT 2027 | One sitting a year | XLRI and its tier; also Welingkar, Great Lakes, KJ Somaiya, Christ (as eligibility), JGU at the 50th percentile | Each institute’s own selection rounds |
| NMAT 2026 | Up to 3 attempts; NMIMS accepts the FIRST attempt only (admission handout), KJ Somaiya the best of two | NMIMS as the primary gate; KJ Somaiya, JGU and Jain at 160+, UPES at 120+ straight to interview | NMIMS runs a case discussion and personal interview; others run their own rounds |
| SNAP 2026 | 3 attempts across 79 test cities (snaptest.org) | Symbiosis only: 29 MBA programs across 17 institutes (snaptest.org) | GE-PI-WAT at each Symbiosis institute |
One thing this table will never have: a paid-shortcut column. NMIMS states in writing that it has no management quota for any program and calls such offers fraudulent (nmims.edu/result), and Symbiosis warns that aspirants who approach through agents are permanently debarred (snaptest.org). Our NMIMS and Symbiosis fact-checks cover both notices in full.
Dates for the 2026-27 cycle

Decide by target college, not by exam
Work backwards from the colleges you would actually join. The exam then chooses itself.
- If you want an IIM or a top-tier PGDM institute, take CAT. There is no substitute and no side door: AICTE-approved PGDM institutes must admit only candidates holding a score in one of six exams (CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, GMAT) or a state CET, selected “strictly on the basis of merit” (AICTE Approval Process Handbook, Appendix-9). CAT is one sitting a year, so it carries the highest stakes of the four.
- If you want Symbiosis, take SNAP. It is the only gate, including for SIBM Pune, and the flexibility sits inside the exam itself: three attempts in a cycle across 79 cities (snaptest.org).
- If you want NMIMS, take NMAT — prepared for attempt one. NMIMS accepts only your first NMAT attempt’s score (its admission handout states this verbatim), so treat the first sitting as the real one; retakes only help at schools that count them, like KJ Somaiya’s best-of-two. NMIMS reserves 30% of its MBA seats for women applicants (NMIMS admissions pages), and selection still runs through a case discussion and personal interview on merit.
- If XLRI-tier is the dream, take XAT, and be honest about the odds: there is no quota and no paid route at that tier, so build the rest of your list from colleges that accept XAT at published bars, like JGU at the 50th percentile (jgu.edu.in).
- If your targets overlap, favour the exam with the most acceptances. Welingkar takes CAT 2025, XAT 2026, GMAT, CMAT 2026 or ATMA (February 2026) for PGDM 2026-28 (welingkar.org). Great Lakes PGDM 2026-28 accepts GMAT, CAT 2024 or 2025, XAT 2025 or 2026, and CMAT (greatlakes.edu.in). KJ Somaiya shortlists on CAT 2025, XAT 2026, GMAT, NMAT best-of-two or CMAT 2026 (kjsim.somaiya.edu).
The wildcard exams the SERP ignores: MAT, CMAT and ATMA
The comparison everyone searches for stops at four exams. The verified college list does not. MAT, CMAT and ATMA are lower-stakes national exams accepted at genuinely good schools, often at published, modest bars:
- Christ University accepts MAT, CAT 2025, CMAT 2026, ATMA 2026, XAT 2026, GMAT and GRE for MBA 2026, and officially states that the minimum entrance score “is only an eligibility criteria” with no bearing on selection, which runs on Christ’s own GD, written assessment and interview (christuniversity.in).
- JGU accepts CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT or ATMA at the 50th percentile, alongside GMAT 450+, GRE 295+ and NMAT 160+ (jgu.edu.in).
- Jain (CMS) exempts candidates from its JET written test at MAT 550+, NMAT 160+, or the 50th percentile in CAT, GMAT, CMAT or XAT (jainuniversity.ac.in).
- UPES sends MAT or CMAT 70-percentilers, CAT 2025 50-percentilers, XAT 2026 holders, GMAT 400+ and NMAT 120+ scorers straight to interview (upes.ac.in exemption criteria).
- GD Goenka admits on a MAT score or its own aptitude test plus PI (gdgoenkauniversity.com), MIT-WPU accepts MAT (September 2025 onward), CMAT 2026, MAH-CET 2026 and more alongside its own 50-mark online test (admissions.mitwpu.edu.in), and SRM gives direct PI consideration to CAT, XAT, MAT, GMAT, NMAT, CMAT and TANCET holders (srmist.edu.in).
If one accessible exam had to do the most work, it would be CMAT: accepted at Great Lakes, Welingkar, KJ Somaiya, Christ and MIT-WPU on our verified list. And MAT runs in multiple windows through the year, which keeps this route open long after the CAT-XAT-NMAT-SNAP season closes.
Match matrix: your profile, your exam, your shortlist
| Your situation | Exam to take | Colleges to shortlist first |
|---|---|---|
| Strong academics, months of prep time, brand-first ambitions | CAT 2026 | IIMs; Great Lakes and Welingkar as CAT-accepting backups |
| Set on Symbiosis specifically | SNAP 2026 | SIBM Pune and the other 16 Symbiosis institutes (29 MBA programs, snaptest.org) |
| Want NMIMS, or prefer fixed-score targets over a percentile race | NMAT 2026 | NMIMS (first attempt counts), KJ Somaiya (best of two), JGU at NMAT 160+ |
| Chasing XLRI-tier, comfortable with one high-stakes January sitting | XAT 2027 | XLRI-tier institutes; Welingkar and KJ Somaiya as XAT-accepting backups |
| Modest scores likely, want maximum doors from one exam | CMAT 2026 | Christ, Welingkar, Great Lakes PGDM |
| Late in the cycle or missed the big registrations | MAT (multiple windows) | Christ, GD Goenka, MIT-WPU |
Registration fees change each cycle and are published only on the official sites linked above; treat any fee quoted to you anywhere else as noise.
If every exam goes wrong, the backup is not a paid seat
A bad exam season has legitimate exits. Universities with their own accessible tests keep admitting on published merit: AMAT at Alliance, JET at Jain, GBAT at GITAM, and IBSAT at IBS, a two-hour test taken from home (ibsindia.org). State institute-level rounds, such as Maharashtra’s post-CAP seats, fill legally and on merit at regulated fees. And sometimes the honest answer is to prepare properly and wait a cycle.
What is never a backup is a “guaranteed seat” for money. That promise is the signature of fraud we document across this site, and the law is not on the buyer’s side either; our legality guide sets out where the line sits. The full set of legitimate no-CAT routes is in our direct MBA admission guide, and if the season has already slipped past you, start with the missed-CAT options page.
Tell us your academic record, target colleges and how much prep time you honestly have, and we will tell you which of these exams is worth your year, free, and if the right answer is to wait a cycle, we will say exactly that.

- Which MBA entrance exam is the easiest?
- That is the wrong question. SNAP only opens Symbiosis, NMAT primarily opens NMIMS plus fixed-score doors at KJ Somaiya, JGU and Jain, and CAT opens everything but demands the most preparation. Pick the exam your target colleges actually accept, then ask how accessible it is.
- Can one exam cover multiple good colleges?
- Yes. CMAT is accepted at Great Lakes (PGDM), Welingkar, KJ Somaiya, Christ and MIT-WPU, which makes it the most efficient single accessible exam on our verified list. JGU goes further and accepts CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT or ATMA at the 50th percentile, so several exams open the same door there.
- If I fail all of them, is a paid seat my backup?
- No. The legitimate backups are university own exams (AMAT at Alliance, JET at Jain, IBSAT at IBS, GBAT at GITAM), state institute-level rounds, and waiting a cycle. AICTE-approved PGDM institutes must fill their seats from exam qualifiers strictly on merit, and a paid guaranteed-seat offer is the documented fraud pattern, not a route.
