XAT 2027: Guide, Colleges Accepting XAT, and Honest Alternatives
XAT 2027 explained: which colleges accept it, the percentiles that actually matter, and the honest alternatives if XAT isn't your route.
The short answer
As of July 2026, XAT 2027 dates are expected, not confirmed: registration around 10 July 2026 and the exam on 3 January 2027, per recent cycles — verify on xatonline.in. XAT is accepted well beyond XLRI, including Great Lakes, Welingkar, KJ Somaiya, JGU, UPES and Christ. Under AICTE Appendix-9 there is no management quota at XLRI-tier institutes; selection is strictly merit-based.
XAT 2027 dates: what is expected, and what is not yet confirmed
XAT, the Xavier Aptitude Test conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, is one of the six exams AICTE recognises for PGDM admission nationwide, and it is accepted well beyond the XLRI system. As we write this in early July 2026, the official XAT 2027 notification has not been published, so every date below is expected, projected from recent cycles. We will state that plainly rather than dress a guess up as a fact.
| Milestone | Window | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Official notification and registration open | Around 10 July 2026 | Expected |
| Registration closes | Early December 2026 | Expected |
| XAT 2027 exam | 3 January 2027 | Expected |
The only place these dates become facts is xatonline.in, the official XAT website. Check it before you plan anything around this table, and watch our deadlines tracker, where we move each milestone from “expected” to “confirmed” as XLRI publishes it.
Two timing points worth noticing. First, the registration window is long: if it follows the expected pattern, you have from mid-July to early December 2026 to register, so there is no rush that justifies paying anyone to “secure” your registration. Second, the exam is expected on 3 January 2027, about five weeks after CAT 2026’s expected exam date of 29 November 2026. That gap makes XAT a genuine second attempt at the same admission season, not a separate year.
XLRI publishes the exact exam pattern, sections and marking scheme with each cycle’s notification. XAT has historically stood out for testing decision making alongside the usual verbal, quantitative and data-interpretation ground, but verify the 2027 pattern on the official site once the notification lands rather than trusting coaching-site summaries of last year.
Who accepts XAT: the verified list
Agents talk about XAT as if it only matters for XLRI. It does not. These are the colleges from our verified research where XAT sits in the published admission criteria. The listings below are from each college’s 2026 admission cycle, the most recent published; each will reissue its list for 2027 entry, and XAT 2027 is the score that will count then. Confirm the exam year on the college’s own page before applying.
| College | What is published about XAT | What actually decides selection | Fee note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Lakes, Chennai and Gurgaon (PGDM) | PGDM 2026-28 accepted XAT 2025 and 2026, alongside CAT and CMAT; minimum 60% across Class 10, 12 and graduation; freshers eligible | The institute’s own application and selection process | Rs 21.63L total for the two-year PGDM, Chennai (official fee page, 2026-28 batch) |
| Welingkar (WeSchool), Mumbai and Bengaluru (PGDM) | PGDM 2026-28 accepted XAT 2026 alongside CAT, CMAT, ATMA and GMAT; 50% in graduation | A profile-based selection process weighting academics, work experience, GD and PI alongside the score | Published on welingkar.org |
| K J Somaiya, Mumbai (MBA) | MBA 2026 shortlisted on XAT 2026, among CAT, GMAT, NMAT (best of two attempts) and CMAT; 50% in any three-year degree | Candidate profile plus GD and PI performance | Published on kjsim.somaiya.edu |
| O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat (MBA) | XAT accepted at the 50th percentile or above; GMAT 450+, NMAT 160+ and GRE 295+ also qualify | Holistic review across academics and the interview process | Published on jgu.edu.in |
| UPES, Dehradun (MBA) | XAT holders are exempt from UPESMET and go straight to interview, per published exemption criteria | The interview; MBA eligibility is 50% in Class X, XII and graduation | Published on upes.ac.in |
| Christ University (MBA) | XAT is one of seven accepted exams for MBA 2026; the score is officially an eligibility criterion only, with “no bearing in the selection process” | Christ’s own GD or micro presentation, written assessment, PI and academic record | Published on christuniversity.in |
| VIT Business School (MBA) | Evaluation on UG academics plus VITBEE or the best valid CAT, XAT or MAT score | The university’s own evaluation | Published on vit.ac.in |
| Bennett University, Greater Noida (MBA) | Reported to accept XAT among CAT, NMAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT, BU-MAT and CUET, followed by a personal interview | Score plus PI, per the reported criteria | Published on bennett.edu.in |
One sourcing note, because our rule is to tell you where every fact comes from: Bennett’s criteria are reported by Careers360 rather than verified by us on bennett.edu.in, which blocked access during our research. Confirm on the official site before you act on that row. And where a fee cell says “published on” the college site, it means we could not verify the figure ourselves and will not fill the gap from aggregators.
Read the middle column of that table carefully, because it is the honest headline of this page: at most XAT-accepting colleges outside the XLRI system, the score gets you shortlisted and the selection is decided by profile, GD and interview. Christ says so in as many words. That is where preparation effort actually pays.
The XLRI-tier reality check: no exam, no seat, no quota
XAT exists because XLRI and its associate institutes admit through it, and at that tier the rule is absolute. XLRI-tier institutes are AICTE-approved standalone PGDM schools, and Appendix-9 of the AICTE Approval Process Handbook requires them to admit only candidates qualified in one of six exams (CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, GMAT) or a state CET, with selection “strictly on the basis of merit” and the merit list displayed on the institute website. One hundred percent of seats. There is no exam-free PGDM at any AICTE-approved institute, and there is no management quota at XLRI, SPJIMR or any school in that band.
So when an agent offers an XLRI-tier seat “through quota” or “through the institute’s discretionary round”, they are selling something that legally does not exist. The same document that makes your XAT score count is the document that makes their offer fraud. If your XAT percentile falls short of that tier, the answer is the accessible colleges above or a stronger attempt next cycle, never a payment. Our legality guide sets out the law, the state capitation acts and the red flags in full.
XAT or an accessible exam? Decide by your target list
The right question is never “which exam is easiest” but “which exam do my target colleges actually require”. Three honest cases:
- If XLRI-tier institutes are genuinely in reach on your academics and preparation, take XAT. Nothing else opens those doors, and the expected 3 January 2027 date gives you a runway through the autumn.
- If your realistic targets are the Welingkar, Great Lakes or KJ Somaiya tier, notice that all three also accept CMAT, and Welingkar accepts ATMA as well. Those are lower-stakes exams accepted at the same doors, and a strong GD-PI showing matters as much as the score at each of them.
- If your list is Christ, JGU, UPES or similar, a modest score already clears the published bar: JGU asks for the 50th percentile, Christ treats the score as eligibility-only, and UPES exempts XAT holders straight to interview. Spending six extra months chasing an elite percentile adds nothing at these colleges.
Because XAT lands after CAT, a sensible plan for many candidates is CAT plus XAT with one accessible exam as insurance, then a college list built around whichever score comes through. Our CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP comparison does this matching properly, our direct MBA admission guide covers every legitimate route that needs no elite score at all, and if you are weighing standalone PGDM schools against university MBA programs, our PGDM vs MBA explainer covers what the difference really is.
Tell us your academics and target list and we will tell you, free, whether XAT belongs on your calendar or an accessible exam serves you better, and if the honest answer is that neither helps this cycle, we will say exactly that.

- When is XAT 2027?
- Registration is expected to open around 10 July 2026 and close in early December 2026, with the exam expected on 3 January 2027. These are expected dates based on recent cycles, not confirmed ones. Check xatonline.in once the official notification is out, and treat any consultant quoting exact dates before that as guessing.
- Can I get XLRI through management quota?
- No. XLRI is an AICTE-approved PGDM institute, and under Appendix-9 of the AICTE Approval Process Handbook such institutes must fill 100% of their seats from qualifiers of six exams (CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, GMAT) or a state CET, selected strictly on the basis of merit. There is no quota to sell, and anyone offering one is offering fraud.
- What XAT percentile do accessible colleges want?
- O.P. Jindal Global University publishes a 50th percentile bar for XAT on its MBA admissions page. Christ University officially treats the entrance score as an eligibility criterion only, with selection riding on its own GD, written assessment and interview. UPES sends XAT holders straight to interview under its published exemption criteria.
- Should I take XAT or an easier exam?
- Decide by target list, not by difficulty. If XLRI-tier institutes are genuinely in reach, XAT is the only door. If your realistic targets are the Welingkar, Great Lakes or KJ Somaiya tier, those schools also accept CMAT, and Welingkar accepts ATMA too, at the same doors with lower stakes. Our CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP comparison maps this out.
