XLRI vs SPJIMR for 2027: Two No-Quota Doors That Do Not Even Share an Exam
XLRI vs SPJIMR for the 2027 intake: XLRI runs on XAT alone, SPJIMR on CAT/GMAT alone; both print merit-only no-quota disclaimers. Verified dates, fees and placement numbers from official pages.
The short answer
As of 15 September 2026, XLRI and SPJIMR share nothing at the door: XLRI's PGDM admits through XAT alone (registration open to 6 December 2026, test 3 January 2027), while SPJIMR's PGDM accepts CAT and GMAT only, with applications open now and closing end of November for a June 2027 start. Both print merit-only, no-quota disclaimers on their official pages.
This is the cleanest head-to-head in Indian management education, and the least understood: XLRI and SPJIMR sit in the same prestige tier, both print merit-only no-quota disclaimers, and yet they do not share a single entrance exam. Choosing between them starts one step earlier than candidates expect — at the exam registration desk. This page maps the decision from both institutes’ official pages, opened on 15 September 2026.
The door: two exams, zero overlap
XLRI runs on XAT alone. The institute’s own site, rendered today, lists XAT as the admission test for every residential PGDM — Business Management, Human Resource Management, General Management, and Logistics & Supply Chain Management (the Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Venture Development programme sits alongside). XAT 2027 registration is open now and closes 6 December 2026; the test is 3 January 2027, 2:00-5:00 pm, per the official registration page re-opened today. XLRI conducts XAT itself on behalf of the XAMI institutes — the school and the exam are the same house.
SPJIMR runs on CAT and GMAT alone. The admissions page, opened today, prints the eligibility line: a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks, and CAT and GMAT entrance scores are accepted — XAT is not in the text. Both fresh graduates and candidates with up to five years of work experience may apply. The application processing fee is Rs 2,000 (marked subject to revision), and the printed window for the June-2027-start intake is mid-September to end of November — the PGDM page’s badge reads “Applications Open” as of today. Shortlisting runs in two printed groups: profile-based, and profile-cum-score-based, with the qualifying entrance score mandatory in both.
The practical consequence: a candidate targeting both schools needs both exams. With CAT 2026 registration closing today, 15 September, at 5 pm, the sequencing is tight — CAT for SPJIMR, then XAT for XLRI six weeks later.
The money and the outcomes
SPJIMR publishes an indicative fee on its fees page — about Rs 24.9 lakh for the 2026-28 batch as verified on 24 August 2026 (the table is image-rendered; confirm the current figure on the page). XLRI’s redesigned site does not publish its PGDM fee on reachable pages, so we do not print a number — the institute’s prospectus and admissions office carry it, and we will update this page the day a public figure appears.
On outcomes, SPJIMR’s PGDM page, opened today, carries the 2025 block: the institute reports placing its full batch for over two decades, with the highest annual salary at Rs 81 lakh, the average at Rs 32.10 lakh and the median at Rs 30 lakh, reported jointly for PGDM and PGDM-BM. XLRI publishes no comparable table on its reachable pages; its placement report is the document to request directly — and to read with our placement-report methodology (audited vs unaudited, median vs average, denominator, CTC breakup).
The one thing both pages say word for word
Both institutes print their no-quota position in plain language. The official XAT site carries XLRI’s caution: admissions are purely merit-based and involve no Management or NRI quota. SPJIMR’s disclaimer reads: “Admission to the PGDM at SPJIMR is strictly based on merit. SPJIMR does not have any quota, management or otherwise… SPJIMR never appoints an intermediary (whether an individual or organisation) under any circumstance to approach any candidate with claims of confirmed admission, for a fee or otherwise.”
For the searcher typing “XLRI management quota” or “SPJIMR direct admission”, those two sentences are the entire answer — from the institutes themselves, not from us.
How to choose
Choose XLRI if you can write XAT on 3 January 2027, if the HRM programme is the goal (it is the country’s benchmark HR degree), and if Jamshedpur’s residential campus model fits your two years. Choose SPJIMR if you hold or can write CAT/GMAT inside its window, if Mumbai’s industry access matters to your plan, and if the published placement block and the profile-based shortlist route suit your file. Choose both if you can run both exams — the calendars allow it. And if your percentile band makes either a long shot this year, the honest move is the low-CAT options map and a planned XAT attempt, not a payment to anyone claiming a side door that both institutes say does not exist.

- Which is better, XLRI or SPJIMR?
- They answer different questions. XLRI PGDM (Jamshedpur) is the XAT route: one exam, mandatory, with programmes in Business Management, HRM, General Management and Logistics & Supply Chain Management. SPJIMR PGDM (Mumbai) is the CAT/GMAT route with a published 2025 placement block (average Rs 32.10 LPA, median Rs 30 LPA) and applications that close end of November for the June 2027 start. Pick by the exam you can write, the city, and which printed programme fits your goal — not by a ranking headline.
- Does XLRI or SPJIMR have a management quota?
- Neither, in writing. The official XAT site carries XLRI's caution that admissions are purely merit-based with no Management or NRI quota. SPJIMR's admissions page states: 'SPJIMR does not have any quota, management or otherwise', and that it never appoints an intermediary to approach any candidate with claims of confirmed admission, for a fee or otherwise. Anyone selling a seat at either institute is contradicted by the institutes' own pages.
- Can I apply to both XLRI and SPJIMR for 2027?
- Yes, but you need two exams. XLRI requires XAT 2027 (registration closes 6 December 2026, test 3 January 2027, 2:00-5:00 pm). SPJIMR requires CAT 2026 or a GMAT score, with its application window running mid-September to end of November 2026 at a Rs 2,000 processing fee. CAT 2026 registration closes 15 September 2026 at 5 pm — if SPJIMR is on your list and you hold no GMAT, today is the CAT deadline.
- What are the fees at XLRI vs SPJIMR?
- SPJIMR publishes an indicative fee on its fees page (about Rs 24.9 lakh for the 2026-28 batch as verified on 24 August 2026; the table is image-rendered, so confirm the current figure on the page). XLRI's fee is not published on the reachable pages of its redesigned site — we do not guess; the institute's admissions prospectus and office carry the number. Both pages are linked in the sources below.
- What are the placement numbers at each?
- SPJIMR publishes its 2025 block on the PGDM page, opened today: the full batch placed for over two decades, highest Rs 81 LPA, average Rs 32.10 LPA, median Rs 30 LPA, reported jointly for PGDM and PGDM-BM. XLRI does not publish a comparable salary table on its reachable pages; its placement report circulates through the institute — ask for it directly and read it with our placement-report methodology guide.
- I have a low CAT percentile. Is either school realistic?
- Honestly: both are reach schools. SPJIMR shortlists in two printed groups — profile-based and profile-cum-score-based — so a weaker score needs a genuinely strong profile to compensate, and meeting the qualifying entrance score is mandatory either way. XLRI shortlists on XAT performance. If your percentile band is below the printed floors of schools like these, our low-CAT options page maps where a modest score still works.
