IIM vs ISB in 2026: The Two-Year CAT Degree vs the One-Year GMAT Sprint

This is the most common premium-tier dilemma we hear, and it has a clean structure once the brochures are ignored. ISB’s PGP and the IIMs’ two-year MBA are both excellent machines — built for different applicants, priced on different logic, entered through different exams. Every figure below comes from an official page opened on 12 September 2026.

The entry gates are genuinely different

ISB’s PGP prints two hard requirements: 24+ months of work experience as of 31 March, and a valid GMAT or GRE score — test-centre editions only, at-home scores expressly excluded. The IIM two-year MBA has no work-experience bar at all; Kozhikode’s policy, re-opened today, awards points for experience but demands only its academic floors (60% in Class 10, 12 and graduation) plus CAT. So the first filter is not preference, it is arithmetic: under two years of experience, the IIMs are the door; over two, both are open. ISB’s Round 1 for the current cycle closes 20 September 2026 — eight days from this verification — while CAT 2026 registration closes 15 September for a 29 November test.

The honest total-cost comparison adds one invisible line: the second year. ISB’s fee is higher by roughly Rs 11-14 lakh against the printed IIM totals above, but the IIM route keeps you out of the workforce a year longer. At the salaries these campuses’ audited reports print, that year is real money in the other direction — which is precisely why the answer changes with your current salary, not with the brochure. Which one fits whom

Choose the IIM two-year when you are a fresher or under the two-year mark, when the degree matters formally (the IIM MBA is a degree under the IIM Act 2017), when the lower printed fee decides, or when CAT is simply the exam you are already preparing. Choose the ISB PGP when you hold 24+ months of solid experience, can produce a test-centre GMAT or GRE, want the twelve-month format, and are changing lanes rather than starting out. Both run scholarships worth pursuing — but neither runs a quota, and anyone selling a seat at either is selling fraud.
