Executive MBA vs Full-Time MBA in India: The Published Rules (2026)

Executive MBA or full-time MBA? The published bars in 2026: IIM A PGPX's 4-year line, Great Lakes PGXPM at 8+ years, SIBM-B's 1-year executive door, real fees.

The short answer

In September 2026, the difference is published in eligibility rules: full-time two-year MBAs admit freshers, while executive formats print hard experience bars — IIM Ahmedabad PGPX asks for four years, Great Lakes PGXPM for eight, and SIBM Bengaluru's MBA (Executive) for one, at Rs 3,00,000 a year against Rs 10.7 lakh for its full-time sibling. Pick by experience band, not by brand.

“Should I do an executive MBA instead?” usually arrives from two very different people: a 23-year-old hoping to skip the entrance-exam grind, and a 34-year-old manager who cannot pause a salary. The published rules answer both, and they answer them differently — this page assembles the bars exactly as schools print them (every figure below was opened on an official page on 5 September 2026) and then walks the decision.

The doors are printed, and they are experience bands

The executive formats segment by years of experience with hard eligibility lines, not preferences:

  • One year and up: SIBM Bengaluru’s MBA (Executive) — a two-year programme for working executives, 50% at graduation plus a minimum of one year of full-time work in a registered organisation, an intake of 30, selection by Personal Interaction, and a fee of Rs 3,00,000 a year. No SNAP, no CAT — the lightest door into a Symbiosis MBA that exists in print.
  • Four years and up: IIM Ahmedabad’s PGPX — the one-year full-time residential format. The 2027-28 rules require at least four years of full-time experience after graduation, a minimum age of 25 as on 31 March 2027, and a test-centre GMAT or GRE from the last five years. This is the executive door that still demands a serious test score.
  • Eight years and up: Great Lakes’ PGXPM — an 18-month modular format (7-9 day classroom blocks roughly once a quarter) for mid-to-senior professionals, at Rs 13.4 lakh including GST, with application, SOP, recommendations and interview — no entrance exam — and a printed application deadline of 30 September 2026.

Below one year of experience, no executive door opens at all: the full-time two-year MBA is the format built for you, and our freshers-vs-experience evidence page shows exactly how schools publish that.

The same university, two prices — read the format, not the brand

SIBM Bengaluru is the cleanest illustration of what “executive” prices like when it is genuinely part-time: Rs 3,00,000 a year for the MBA (Executive) against Rs 10,70,000 a year for the full-time MBA at the same institute. The full-time fee buys the residential machine — hostel corridors, the placement cell, the internship bridge into a new career. The executive fee buys the degree and the classroom while your salary keeps running. Neither is a discount version of the other; they are different products sharing a university.

The IIM one-year residentials are the exception that proves the rule: they price like flagships because they are full-time programmes with placement seasons, aimed at experienced candidates making a hard pivot. ISB’s PGP sits in the same logic — one year, full-time, 24-plus months of experience and a GMAT or GRE required.

How we would choose

Three questions, in order. First: does your experience clear the printed bar of the format you want — today, not by the time classes start? Second: can your career absorb the format — a full-time year away, or 7-9 day blocks each quarter with evening work between them? Third: what are you buying — a placement cell and a track change (that is the full-time product) or progression, network and credential inside your current track (that is the executive product)?

If the honest answers point at both, run the money: total fee plus forgone salary against the school’s published median outcome. Our budget-band page keeps the verified totals, and the placement-report guide shows how to read the outcome side. If your situation does not fit either template cleanly — a career gap, a family business, an employer sponsoring part of the fee — that is exactly the kind of file we review one-to-one: ask us to map which published doors your profile actually clears before you spend an application rupee.

Straight answers

What is the real difference between an executive MBA and a full-time MBA in India?
Who is allowed in and how the classroom runs. The full-time two-year MBA or PGDM is built for freshers and early-career candidates, runs daily, and selects through entrance exams plus interviews. The executive formats are built for people who keep working: weekend, modular or blended delivery, published minimum-experience bars (one to eight years depending on the school), and selection by profile and interview rather than a national percentile. The credential is the same level; the door and the timetable are different machines.
How much work experience do I need for an executive MBA?
Whatever the school prints — and the spread is wide. SIBM Bengaluru's MBA (Executive) asks for a minimum of one year of full-time experience after graduation. IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX 2027-28 requires at least four years of full-time experience after graduation plus a minimum age of 25. Great Lakes' PGXPM asks for eight or more years as on 31 October 2026. Below one year, the executive door does not exist; the full-time format is your format.
Is an executive MBA cheaper than a full-time MBA?
Often dramatically so at the same institution. SIBM Bengaluru charges Rs 3,00,000 a year for its MBA (Executive) against Rs 10,70,000 a year for the full-time MBA — about a seventh of the price for the same university's degree, because the executive student uses no hostel, no placement cell and far less campus. Great Lakes' PGXPM prints Rs 13.4 lakh including GST for 18 months, materials and alumni subscription. The expensive exceptions are the IIM one-year residential formats, which price like the flagship programmes they are.
Do executive MBA programmes need CAT, GMAT or other entrance exams?
Usually not — that is their design. SIBM Bengaluru's MBA (Executive) selects through a Personal Interaction alone. Great Lakes' PGXPM runs application, statement of purpose, recommendations and interview, with no entrance exam. The big exception is the IIM one-year full-time residential format: IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX demands a test-centre GMAT or GRE taken within the last five years. 'Executive' on the label tells you nothing about the test rule — read the admissions page.
Should I do an executive MBA or quit my job for a full-time MBA?
Run it as an arithmetic problem, not a prestige one. If you have under two years of experience, the executive doors are mostly closed by rule — full-time is the honest path. If you have eight-plus years, a salary you cannot pause, and an employer who values the degree, the weekend or modular format keeps the income running while you study; PGXPM's 7-9 day quarterly classroom blocks exist exactly for this. The full-time residential formats earn their fee-and-forgone-salary cost when you are changing function, industry or geography and need the placement cell and the internship bridge.
Will recruiters value an executive MBA the same as a full-time MBA?
Official placement reports do not grade the two against each other, and anyone quoting a universal conversion rate is guessing. What is fair to say from the published structures: executive formats are built for progression inside your current career track — their cohorts are senior, their networking is the point, and many students are company-sponsored — while full-time formats are built for placement into new tracks. Compare programmes on what the school publishes about its own cohort and outcomes, never on a consultant's blended salary claim.
