GMAT and GRE for MBA in India: Who Officially Accepts What (2026)

A GMAT score is not a master key to Indian B-schools, and a GRE score is accepted in far fewer places than the internet suggests. The honest map is short enough to print: a handful of schools publish exactly which tests they take, which editions count, and how old the score may be. This page lists only the rules we opened on official institute pages today, 21 August 2026, and names the school next to every rule.

The one-year IIM tier: where GMAT and GRE are the front door

The full-time one-year MBA at the older IIMs runs on GMAT or GRE, not CAT. IIM Ahmedabad’s PGPX requires a valid GMAT or GRE score taken within the last five years for its 2027-28 batch — the earliest acceptable test dates are 2 September 2021 for Round 1 and 23 November 2021 for Round 2 — and confirms the GMAT Focus Edition is accepted. Applicants must be at least 25 years old as of 31 March 2027. IIM Bangalore’s ePGP requires a valid GMAT or GRE score that stays valid through your application round’s closing date — and its admissions page, re-opened on 7 September 2026, now prints the same at-home ban as Calcutta’s: online GMAT/GRE scores (the exam taken at home) will not be accepted for EPGP 2027. IIM Calcutta’s MBAEx requires a GMAT, and for the 2026-27 batch it accepts only test-centre GMAT scores; the page states in writing that online GMAT scores will not be accepted.

These are programmes for professionals with years of work experience, not fresh graduates — the one-year vs two-year decision is covered in our format guide. The fees sit in a different band too: IIM Ahmedabad publishes Rs 35 lakhs for PGPX 2026-27 in single accommodation (Rs 37.10 lakhs in married-student housing, both plus the international immersion cost) — re-verified on the official fee page on 28 August 2026 — and we cover it on our MBA budget-band page.

One two-year exception belongs on this list: IRMA in Anand — whose MBA now runs under “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University — lists a valid GMAT or GRE score among its nine accepted exams for the 2026-28 batch, alongside CAT, XAT, CMAT, CUET PG and GATE, at a published Rs 8,70,000 total fee with an online interview. For a GRE/GMAT holder who wants a two-year residential MBA in India without CAT, it is the clearest published door we have verified.

Great Lakes PGPM: every GMAT edition, with a validity window

Great Lakes Chennai’s PGPM admissions page for the 2027-28 process accepts GMAT scores taken after 1 January 2024 — and states that all editions, Classic, Focus and Online, are accepted — alongside CAT 2025 or 2026 and XAT 2026 or 2027. That is the most GMAT-friendly published rule we could verify at a two-year-programme school group this cycle, and it makes the PGPM a genuine second door for a candidate whose CAT day went badly but who holds a recent GMAT.

The two-year PGDM tier: GMAT as a percentile or a stage

Two selective private schools publish GMAT routes into their two-year programmes. WeSchool’s official cut-off notice for PGDM 2026-28 shortlists its flagship Mumbai PGDM at 80 percentile in CAT, XAT or GMAT (85 in ATMA or CMAT), with lower bars for other programmes and the Bengaluru campus. MICA’s admissions page lists CAT, XAT or GMAT as the qualifying exam for its PGDM, with MICAT on top; its published final-merit weightages give the CAT/XAT/GMAT component 35 points out of 100. Fixed score bars at private universities: GMAT 450, GRE 295

The most accessible published GMAT/GRE bars sit at two universities. Christ University Bangalore’s MBA 2026 document accepts GMAT Focus 450+ or GRE 295+ as alternatives to MAT 600+ or 60 percentile in CAT, XAT, CMAT or ATMA. O.P. Jindal Global University’s MBA publishes GMAT 450+, GRE 295+ or NMAT 160+ alongside its 50th-percentile bars across CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT and ATMA. These are real, printed thresholds — a candidate holding GMAT 460 clears a published bar at both, without touching CAT.

Who accepts neither: the NMIMS line

Just as important is the verified negative. NMIMS’s NMAT 2026 admission handout makes the NMAT by GMAC test mandatory for applying to its management programmes and accepts only the first attempt’s score. A GMAT or GRE score, however strong, does not enter the NMIMS process. Aggregator tables listing “NMIMS GMAT cutoff” are inventing a door the university says does not exist — the same pattern we documented on the percentile-band page.

How to use this map

Three checks before you book anything. First, the edition: IIM Calcutta’s MBAEx refuses online GMAT scores, IIM Bangalore’s ePGP now refuses at-home GMAT/GRE for 2027, while Great Lakes accepts them — the at-home test is not universally valid. Second, the age of your score: five years at IIM Ahmedabad, post-1 January 2024 at Great Lakes, valid-through-deadline at IIM Bangalore. Third, the fit: the one-year IIM programmes assume substantial work experience, while Christ and JGU run conventional two-year MBAs.
