XLRI vs IIM Kozhikode: The XAT Brand Against the CAT Floor, Priced

XLRI vs IIM Kozhikode: Rs 15.25 lakh a year from the official e-Prospectus against the signed Rs 23,50,000 fee table — XAT-only against CAT-only, both no-quota.

The short answer

As of 5 October 2026, XLRI's official e-Prospectus prices the two-year PGDM at Rs 15.25 lakh a year — about Rs 30.5 lakh — against IIM Kozhikode's signed fee table at Rs 23,50,000 total. XLRI admits through XAT alone, registration to 6 December; Kozhikode through CAT alone with printed 85/75 minimums and a 60-percent academic floor. Neither prints a management quota.

This is the comparison a strong candidate actually faces in November: write XAT for XLRI, or trust CAT for IIM Kozhikode — two of India’s most respected management brands behind two different exams, at two very different prices. XLRI’s own e-Prospectus prices its PGDM at Rs 15.25 lakh a year, about Rs 30.5 lakh in all. IIM Kozhikode’s signed fee table prints Rs 23,50,000 total. Both documents were re-read today, 5 October 2026. This page puts the two side by side.

The honest label on the gap: about Rs 7 lakh in Kozhikode’s favour across two years — before XLRI’s revision clause moves either way. What the gap buys on XLRI’s side is the older private-school brand, the Xavier’s network and the HRM programme that effectively owns its category in India; what it buys on Kozhikode’s side is the IIM degree, the lower bill, and a mess deposit that comes back.

Two doors, two exams

XLRI’s machine is XAT-only. XAT 2027 registration runs 15 July to 6 December 2026 (Rs 2,300 plus Rs 200 per XLRI programme), the exam sits 3 January 2027, and one form covers Jamshedpur and Delhi. XLRI sets no published percentile floor — the institute shortlists on the score it gets, programme by programme.

Kozhikode’s machine is CAT-only, with a printed floor and a printed formula. General candidates need 85 overall with 75 in every section just to register for Stage 1 — and a hard academic floor beneath it: 60% in each of Class X, Class XII and graduation. The Stage-2 shortlist index reads CAT 50%, Class X 15%, Class XII 20%, diversity 10%/5%, work-ex 5%; the final list reads CAT 35%, PI 35%, WAT 20%, resume 10%. WAT-PI runs across six cities. A candidate with a weak Class XII transcript can be XLRI-eligible and Kozhikode-ineligible at any percentile — that is the single most-missed fact in this comparison.

The quota question, answered from print

Neither institute prints a management, institutional or discretionary route. XLRI’s caution is explicit — no Management quota, no NRI quota. Kozhikode’s policy carries the IIM clauses: no authorised agent, no postponement, the printed three-stage process or nothing. At an IIM the seat matrix and reservation formula are published law; at XLRI the entire intake moves through XAT. Anyone selling a seat at either is contradicted by the documents opened today.

The placement evidence, stated honestly

Both schools place well, and neither publishes a consolidated public salary table we can re-verify today — XLRI circulates its report through the institute, Kozhikode posts recruiter lists without an audited average on its public pages. We state that gap rather than fill it with aggregator numbers. When either institute’s official report reaches you, run it through the five checks in our placement-report methodology — denominator, median versus average, CTC breakup — before it settles the decision.

Who should pick which

  • Pick XLRI if the HRM or BM brand is the specific target, XAT suits your preparation calendar (3 January, after CAT), and the roughly Rs 30.5 lakh build is budgeted with its revision clause. A weak Class XII does not disqualify you here the way it can at Kozhikode.
  • Pick Kozhikode if your academics clear the 60/60/60 floor, your CAT can realistically reach the high-80s, and the Rs 7 lakh saving plus the IIM degree outweigh the XLRI brand for your target roles.
  • Either way — write both exams if both doors are live for you; they sit five weeks apart and share most of their syllabus. And if an agent offers a seat at either outside these printed processes, both institutes’ own pages, opened today, show no such channel exists.

Straight answers

Which is cheaper, XLRI or IIM Kozhikode?
IIM Kozhikode, by roughly Rs 7 lakh on documents re-read 5 October 2026: the signed fee table totals Rs 23,50,000 across two years (Rs 11,75,000 a year, mess via a refundable Rs 40,000-a-term deposit outside the total). XLRI's own e-Prospectus prices the PGDM at Rs 15.25 lakh a year — about Rs 30.5 lakh for the batch — marked subject to revision. Both figures come from the institutes' own PDFs, not aggregator pages.
Which exam do I need for XLRI vs IIM Kozhikode?
Different exams entirely. XLRI admits its PGDM (BM) and (HRM) through XAT alone — XAT 2027 registration runs 15 July to 6 December 2026, the exam sits 3 January 2027, and one XAT form covers the Jamshedpur and Delhi campuses. IIM Kozhikode admits through CAT alone: CAT 2026 registration closed 15 September 2026, and the shortlist registers on Kozhikode's own Stage-1 portal after the result. An XAT-only candidate cannot reach Kozhikode; a CAT-only candidate cannot reach XLRI.
What CAT percentile does IIM Kozhikode need?
The printed floor is 85 overall with 75 in each section for General candidates — but the floor only enters you into Stage-1 registration. The Stage-2 shortlist runs on an Aggregate Index: CAT 50%, Class X 15%, Class XII 20%, gender/academic diversity 10% or 5%, work experience 5%. And Kozhikode adds a hard academic floor no XAT door prints: 60% in each of Class X, Class XII and graduation. A 90-percentile candidate with 58% in Class XII does not clear the bar.
Is there a management quota at XLRI or IIM Kozhikode?
Neither prints one, anywhere. XLRI's caution states there is no Management quota and no NRI quota — admission is through XAT (or the printed GMAT routes for specific programmes) alone. IIM Kozhikode's policy carries the standard IIM clauses: no postponement, no authorised agent, admission only through the printed three-stage process on CAT. Anyone selling a seat at either contradicts both institutes' own documents — and at an IIM, the seat matrix and reservation formula are published law, not a negotiation.
How do placements compare between XLRI and IIM Kozhikode?
Honestly: neither publishes a consolidated public salary table we can re-verify today. XLRI circulates its placement report through the institute rather than posting it; Kozhikode's public pages carry recruiter lists and process notes but no audited average table. Treat any single salary figure an aggregator quotes for either school as unverified until the institute's own report shows it — the five checks in our placement-report guide walk through exactly that test.
Should I write XAT or CAT for these two?
The honest answer is that serious candidates write both — CAT 2026 sits 29 November and XAT 2027 sits 3 January, five weeks apart, and the exams share most of their syllabus. If you can write only one: CAT is the wider door (the IIMs, MDI, FMS, the IIT departments), XAT the narrower but distinct one (XLRI, XIM, MICA, IMT, GIM, TAPMI). Kozhikode needs CAT; XLRI needs XAT; there is no shortcut around either.
