XLRI vs TAPMI: One XAT Registration, Two Very Different Bills

XLRI vs TAPMI: Rs 15.25 lakh a year from the official e-Prospectus against Rs 9,75,000 a year on TAPMI's own page — one XAT form, both no-quota in writing.

The short answer

As of 5 October 2026, XLRI's e-Prospectus prices its PGDM at Rs 15.25 lakh a year — about Rs 30.5 lakh — against TAPMI's printed Rs 9,75,000 a year tuition across all seven MBA programmes. One XAT 2027 registration reaches both; TAPMI also takes CAT and GMAT behind printed work-experience bands. Both declare in writing that no management quota exists.

One XAT registration reaches both of these schools — and the two bills could hardly sit further apart. XLRI’s own e-Prospectus prices its PGDM at Rs 15.25 lakh a year, about Rs 30.5 lakh in all. TAPMI prints Rs 9,75,000 a year tuition across every one of its seven MBA programmes. Both documents were re-read today, 5 October 2026. This is the comparison for the candidate deciding how far the XAT form should reach.

The tuition gap — roughly Rs 11 lakh across two years — is larger than the entire fee at most Indian MBA colleges. What it buys on the XLRI side is the brand tier: the Xavier’s network, the HRM programme that effectively owns its category, and a shortlist zone the market reads well above TAPMI’s printed 90 band. What stays on the TAPMI side is a serious, printed, seven-programme machine at a price a middle-class family can plan around.

One January morning, two shortlists

XAT 2027 registration runs 15 July to 6 December 2026 (Rs 2,300), the exam sits 3 January 2027, and one score reaches both schools — but the resemblance ends there. XLRI prints no bar: the institute shortlists on the score it receives, and its realistic zone sits among the highest in the country. TAPMI prints everything: the 60% graduation bar, the work-experience-banded cut-offs, the highest-score-considered rule, and the selection weights (entrance 35, academics 15, GD-PI 45, extracurricular 5). For a candidate holding a low-90s XAT, TAPMI’s printed route is a plan; XLRI is a lottery ticket worth the Rs 200 programme fee, nothing more.

The quota question, answered from print

Both institutes refuse the route in writing — XLRI’s caution covers Management and NRI quotas alike, TAPMI’s line is on its admissions page for anyone to check. These are two of the cleanest printed refusals mapped on this site, and they matter most here: the Rs 11 lakh gap is exactly the territory where agents sell ‘alternate routes’ to families who have priced TAPMI and been quoted XLRI. There is no such route at either school.

The placement evidence, stated honestly

Neither school publishes a consolidated public salary table we can re-verify today — XLRI circulates its report through the institute, TAPMI posts no current salary statistics. The brand hierarchy is real and worth paying for when the percentile is real too; it is not worth a premium paid to any third party. When an official report reaches you, the five checks in our placement-report methodology separate the audited figure from the brochure one.

Who should pick which

  • Pick XLRI if your XAT percentile can realistically reach the national top band, the HRM or BM brand is the specific target, and the roughly Rs 30.5 lakh build (with its revision clause) is budgeted.
  • Pick TAPMI if your realistic zone is the 80-to-low-90s — its printed bands tell you exactly where you stand by work experience — and the Rs 11 lakh saving funds the rest of the plan. The Manipal ecosystem and the seven-programme menu are the strongest printed offer in that band.
  • Either way — the same XAT morning covers both, so file both forms if both are live for you: XLRI’s Rs 200 programme add-on and TAPMI’s application ladder are cheap insurance against each other. And refuse, on both schools’ own printed words, anyone selling a seat outside these processes.

Straight answers

Which is cheaper, XLRI or TAPMI?
TAPMI, by roughly Rs 11 lakh across two years on documents re-read 5 October 2026: Rs 9,75,000 a year tuition — about Rs 19.5 lakh for the programme — against XLRI's Rs 15.25 lakh a year, about Rs 30.5 lakh, marked subject to revision. Both are residential campuses with living costs on top; the tuition gap alone exceeds most Indian MBAs' entire fee.
Does one XAT registration cover both XLRI and TAPMI?
Yes for the exam, no for the applications. XAT 2027 registration (15 July-6 December 2026, Rs 2,300, exam 3 January 2027) sends your score to both — XLRI charges Rs 200 per programme on top of the XAT fee, while TAPMI shortlists from its own application (Rs 2,000-5,750 by programme count). You still file each institute's form separately; the shared part is the January morning itself.
What percentile does TAPMI need compared to XLRI?
TAPMI prints its bars: for the MBA (Core), above 90 percentile if your work experience is under 11 months, above 80 at 12-23 months, and profile-based shortlisting at 24-plus months — across CAT, XAT or GMAT, highest score considered. XLRI prints no floor at all: it shortlists on the XAT score it receives, programme by programme, and the market reads its realistic zone well above TAPMI's printed 90 band. A candidate in the low 90s has a printed TAPMI route and an unprinted XLRI chance.
Is there a management quota at XLRI or TAPMI?
Both say no in writing — two of the clearest printed refusals mapped on this site. XLRI's caution reads that there is no Management quota and no NRI quota; TAPMI's admissions page prints 'There is no "Management Quota" at TAPMI.' Anyone selling a seat at either is contradicted by the institutes' own documents, opened today.
How do placements compare between XLRI and TAPMI?
Honestly: neither publishes a consolidated public salary table we can re-verify today. XLRI circulates its report through the institute; TAPMI publishes no current salary statistics on its admissions pages. The brand hierarchy is real — XLRI sits in the national top tier — but run any specific package figure for either school through the five checks in our placement-report guide before it drives an Rs 11-lakh-apart decision.
Who should pick TAPMI over XLRI?
The candidate whose realistic percentile sits in the low 90s, whose work experience fits TAPMI's printed bands, and for whom the Rs 11 lakh gap changes the family arithmetic — TAPMI's Manipal machine, printed weights (entrance 35, academics 15, GD-PI 45) and seven-programme menu are a serious outcome at that price. XLRI is the pick when the percentile can realistically reach its zone and the HRM or BM brand is the specific target; nobody should pay a premium for XLRI through any door other than XAT.
