NMIMS vs TAPMI: The NMAT-Only Door Against the Four-Exam Menu

NMIMS vs TAPMI: Rs 13.5 lakh a year against Rs 9.75 lakh on official documents re-read today — NMAT-only first attempt against a four-exam menu, both no-quota.

The short answer

As of 11 October 2026, NMIMS's official handout prices the Mumbai MBA at Rs 13,50,000 a year against TAPMI's Rs 9,75,000 — Rs 3.75 lakh apart annually. NMIMS accepts NMAT alone, first attempt only, its application extended to 25 October; TAPMI takes CAT, XAT and GMAT with NMAT counting for sectoral programmes alone. Both print no management quota.

Two private western-India doors, Rs 3.75 lakh a year apart, behind two very different exam philosophies. NMIMS’s official handout prices the Mumbai MBA at Rs 13,50,000 a year. TAPMI’s own prospectus prints Rs 9,75,000 a year across all seven of its MBA programmes. Both documents were re-read today, 6 October 2026 — with NMIMS’s registration closing in four days.

The honest label on the gap: roughly Rs 7.5 lakh across two years in TAPMI’s favour, before residence costs on both sides. What the premium buys at NMIMS is Mumbai itself — the recruiter density, the NMIMS brand’s corporate depth, and a campus inside the country’s financial capital. What it buys at TAPMI is a Rs 9.75 lakh flat price across seven programmes on MAHE’s Manipal campus, with the strongest printed work-experience concessions in this comparison.

The exam nuance aggregators flatten

NMIMS reads NMAT alone — and only your first attempt. The handout is explicit: “NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate.” A retake strategy is worthless here; the first sitting is the whole story. The application window was extended yesterday — it now closes 25 October 2026 — and must be complete before your exam day.

TAPMI reads CAT, XAT and GMAT for everything — and NMAT only for sectoral programmes. The admissions page prints it plainly: “NMAT by GMAC (Only for sectoral programs)”. So the candidate whose only score is NMAT can reach NMIMS and TAPMI’s banking-financial-services family, but not TAPMI’s flagship MBA. The candidate holding CAT or XAT finds TAPMI open and NMIMS shut. TAPMI considers the highest of your valid scores and prints work-experience bands: above 90 percentile under 11 months, above 80 for 12-23 months, profile-based shortlisting at 24-plus, with the entrance test at 35 of 100 against GD-WAT-PI at 45.

The quota question, answered from print

Both institutes print their refusals verbatim. NMIMS: “There is NO ‘Management Quota’ at NMIMS for MBA Programs. If you receive any E-Mail / SMS related to it, consider it fraudulent.” TAPMI: “There is no ‘Management Quota’ at TAPMI” — beside the line that the IIMs, XLRI and GMAC have no role in its selection process. An agent offering a seat at either is contradicted by the PDFs opened today.

Who should pick which

  • Pick NMIMS if Mumbai is the target city, the NMAT first attempt already went well (or is about to — the exam window runs and the NMIMS application now closes 25 October), and the brand’s recruiter depth justifies the premium.
  • Pick TAPMI if you hold a strong CAT/XAT/GMAT score, work experience earns you the lower printed bands or the profile-based shortlist, and roughly Rs 7.5 lakh of savings across two years matters more than the Mumbai postcode.
  • Either way — check which exam each door actually reads before paying anything, and if someone offers a seat at either outside these printed processes, both institutes’ own documents, opened today, show no such channel exists.

Straight answers

Which is cheaper, NMIMS Mumbai or TAPMI?
TAPMI, by Rs 3.75 lakh a year on documents re-read 6 October 2026. NMIMS's official NMAT handout prices the Mumbai MBA at Rs 13,50,000 per annum for 2026-2028, with the second-year fee arriving in the offer letter. TAPMI's own prospectus prints Rs 9,75,000 a year in tuition across all seven MBA programmes. Across two years the gap is roughly Rs 7.5 lakh before hostel and mess — and both figures come from the institutes' own PDFs, not aggregator pages.
Does TAPMI accept NMAT? Does NMIMS accept CAT?
Careful — this is the nuance aggregators flatten. NMIMS accepts NMAT alone for its MBA programmes, and only your FIRST NMAT attempt counts; no CAT, no XAT, no GMAT. TAPMI's admissions page prints a menu: CAT, XAT and GMAT for all programmes, with NMAT by GMAC accepted only for the sectoral programmes (the banking-financial-services family) — for the flagship MBA at TAPMI, NMAT is not the door. If your only score is NMAT, NMIMS is the option and TAPMI's sectoral programmes are the exception; if your score is CAT or XAT, TAPMI opens and NMIMS stays shut.
What percentile does TAPMI need compared to NMIMS?
TAPMI prints its bands: above 90 percentile for candidates with under 11 months of work experience, above 80 for 12-23 months, and profile-based shortlisting from 24 months — with the entrance test weighted 35 of 100 against GD-WAT-PI at 45. NMIMS prints no advance cut-off: it shortlists from the first-attempt NMAT score into its Stage-2 process and reserves 30% of seats for female candidates. Neither institute's final bar exists before the process runs — treat any fixed number an agent quotes as invention.
Is there a management quota at NMIMS or TAPMI?
Both say no in their own documents, re-read today. NMIMS's handout: 'There is NO Management Quota at NMIMS for MBA Programs. If you receive any E-Mail / SMS related to it, consider it fraudulent. Beware of such activities, and do not engage in any monetary transactions.' TAPMI's prospectus: 'There is no Management Quota at TAPMI.' Anyone selling a seat at either is contradicted by the institutes' own PDFs.
When do NMIMS and TAPMI applications close?
NMIMS's application now closes 25 October 2026 — extended yesterday past the printed 10 October close, with nmat.nmims.edu printing 'Application Extended Till: 25th October 2026' beside a live countdown today — at Rs 3,000, with the registration required before your NMAT exam day. TAPMI's admissions page still prints the completed 2026-28 window (applications ran 15 October 2025 to 27 January 2026); the 2027-29 dates are not yet published there — watch the institute's own page, and do not rely on any third party claiming the window is open or closed.
NMIMS Mumbai or TAPMI — which should I pick?
On documents: TAPMI asks Rs 3.75 lakh less a year, reads four exams, and rewards work experience with lower printed bands and profile-based shortlists — but Manipal is the campus and the 2027-29 window is not yet printed. NMIMS offers the Mumbai location, the NMIMS brand's recruiter depth, and a NMAT-only door whose first-attempt rule makes a retake strategy worthless. If you hold a strong CAT or XAT score, TAPMI is the cheaper door; if NMAT is your exam, NMIMS is the only one of the two that reads it for the flagship.
