MBA Through XAT in 2026-27: Where the XLRI-Run Exam Actually Works

XAT is the second door of the Indian MBA season — the exam that keeps a January plan alive when CAT goes badly, and the only door into one of the country’s two most selective private schools. It is run by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the XAMI member institutes, and the official site, re-opened on 15 September 2026, claims acceptance at 250-plus B-schools across 100-plus test cities. The 2027-intake calendar, from the official page

Per the XAT 2027 registration page re-opened today: registration opened 15 July 2026 and closes 6 December 2026; the admit card download is 20 December 2026 (tentative); the exam is 3 January 2027, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm — one afternoon session, three hours. The homepage confirms registration is open now. That calendar is the strategic point: XAT sits five weeks after CAT 2026 (29 November), so a candidate who writes CAT on 29 November can still register for XAT inside the same week and get a full second attempt at a different college set.

Where the route works — verified accepters, opened today

XLRI Jamshedpur — the mandatory door. XLRI’s own site, rendered today, lists exactly one admission test for its PGDM programmes in Business Management, Human Resource Management, General Management and Logistics & Supply Chain Management: XAT. No second exam substitutes at XLRI, and the official XAT site carries the institute’s caution verbatim: admissions are purely merit-based, with no Management or NRI quota. XIM University Bhubaneswar — XAT among four routes. The MBA-BM accepts XAT beside CAT, GMAT and the university’s own XGMT, on a 55% graduation bar, into WAT-GD-PI. The published 2026 fee components total about Rs 25.8 lakh across two years, re-read on the official fee table today.

MICA Ahmedabad — XAT plus MICAT. MICA’s admissions page, opened today, prints the sequence: apply for MICAT, submit CAT/XAT/GMAT scores, sit MICAT I or II, then the group exercise and personal interview. XAT alone is never sufficient at MICA — the institute’s own MICAT rides on top. The page lists the PGDM fee at ₹28 lakh for the 2025-27 batch.

IMT Ghaziabad — XAT 2027 by name. The common-admissions page, opened today, lists accepted tests for IMT Ghaziabad as CAT 2026 / XAT 2027 / GMAT (GMAT conducted from 1 July 2022, scores to reach the institute by 15 January 2027) — and notes CMAT 2027 applies only at IMT Nagpur. Applications are open now at a published ₹3,500 plus charges.

GIM Goa — XAT with a score-blind round. GIM’s admission-process page, opened today, lists XAT 2026, CAT 2025 or GMAT (taken 1 January 2024 to 15 January 2026) on a 50% bar (45% for SC/ST), with its Achiever’s Round shortlisting on profile alone before scores are counted — the friendliest printed structure for a candidate whose test score is the weak part of the file.

TAPMI Manipal — XAT with the highest-score rule. TAPMI’s admissions page, opened today, asks for 60% in graduation and a valid cut-off score in CAT, XAT or GMAT (NMAT by GMAC only for sectoral programmes), with the highest score considered for selection.

Where the route never works

The negative space matters more than the list, because fabricated ‘XAT cut-off’ tables are where agents fish. The IIMs run on CAT alone. NMIMS prints NMAT-by-GMAC as mandatory, first attempt only. SPJIMR’s admissions page, re-opened today, states CAT and GMAT scores are accepted for the PGDM — XAT appears nowhere in its eligibility text. ISB takes test-centre GMAT or GRE only. If a list shows XAT against any of these names, the list is wrong.

The honest limits

A XAT score is a ticket into each institute’s own selection — shortlists, interviews and written rounds — never a seat by itself. XLRI’s printed caution is the summary for the whole route: merit only, no quota, and fake-offer warnings issued by the exam authority itself.
