MBA Through NMAT in 2026: Schools, Rules, and Attempt Strategy

Which schools accept NMAT for MBA in 2026, which attempt each one counts, and how to plan your three attempts. Every rule sourced from official pages.

The short answer

As of July 2026, NMAT opens NMIMS, KJ Somaiya, O.P. Jindal, Jain, UPES, GITAM, Great Lakes PGPM and MIT-WPU, all on published merit processes. The exam allows up to three attempts, but each school counts a different one: NMIMS accepts only your first attempt's score, KJ Somaiya the best of two. Plan attempts around your target school, not the exam rules.

An MBA through NMAT is a real route, not a workaround. It runs through published merit processes at NMIMS, KJ Somaiya and a growing list of credible schools, and its one genuinely tricky rule is that the exam’s attempt policy and each school’s acceptance policy are two different things. This page covers the route: who accepts NMAT, which attempt each school counts, and how to plan around that. For the exam itself, registration windows and expected dates, see our NMAT 2026 exam page; for how NMAT compares with the other gates, see CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP.

Which schools accept NMAT for an MBA in 2026?

Eight schools on our verified list accept NMAT on their own official pages, and NMIMS is the only one where it is the sole gate. The rest accept it alongside other exams, which changes how you should use it.

Alliance University, Bangalore also names NMAT among the accepted national tests and publishes NMAT-linked scholarship tiers, which we cover below. Every school in this table admits through its own published rounds after the exam. NMAT gets you shortlisted; it does not finish the job anywhere.

Which NMAT attempt does each school count?

Each school decides for itself, and this is the single most misunderstood rule on the NMAT route. GMAC, which runs the exam, allows up to three attempts in a testing year; its official page frames them as “3 attempts to improve your score” (mba.com/exams/nmat). That is the exam’s policy. The schools’ policies differ:

  • NMIMS counts only your first attempt. Its admission handout for batch 2026-28 states verbatim: “NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate” (official handout PDF). A better second or third score does not reach NMIMS.
  • KJ Somaiya counts the best of two attempts. Its MBA programme page lists “NMAT (Best of two attempts will be considered)” among its accepted scores (kjsim.somaiya.edu). A retake genuinely helps there.
  • Fixed-bar schools count any attempt that clears the bar. O.P. Jindal and Jain publish 160 plus, UPES publishes 120 plus. Which sitting produced the score does not matter.

One more distinction, because families mix it up every season: NPAT, the NMIMS undergraduate exam for BBA, allows one main attempt plus two retakes with the best of three counting (npat.nmims.edu). The postgraduate rule is the opposite. Never read one NMIMS exam’s policy into the other, and never read GMAC’s retake allowance as any school’s promise to count it.

How should you plan your attempts?

Decide which school matters most before you book anything, because the right strategy differs completely by target.

If NMIMS is your first choice, there is only one attempt that counts. Do not book an early sitting as practice. Prepare fully, take mocks until your scores stabilise, and schedule your first attempt when you are at your peak, with enough window left for a KJ Somaiya-oriented retake afterward if you want one. A throwaway first sitting at NMIMS is a throwaway application.

If KJ Somaiya leads your list, plan for two sittings. The best of two counts, and the exam score is only 25 percent of Somaiya’s selection weight for 2026-28, with the interview at 30 percent, academics at 15, the written ability test and problem situation analysis at 10 each, and work experience at 10 (kjsim.somaiya.edu). Space the attempts far enough apart to fix what the first one exposed.

If your targets are the fixed-bar schools, any clearing attempt works. JGU and Jain at 160 plus and UPES at 120 plus are fixed scores, not percentile races. Take an early attempt; if it clears the bar you are done, and if not you retake without penalty.

A strong score also buys fee relief at some schools. Alliance publishes NMAT merit scholarship tiers on its admission-process page: a 50 percent tuition waiver at 240 and above, 35 percent at 220, 25 percent at 200 and 10 percent at 180, subject to a 60 percent academic prerequisite across Class X, XII and graduation (alliance.edu.in, 2026). GITAM maps NMAT 2025 scores into its merit scholarship slabs as well (programmes.gitam.edu). A retake aimed at a scholarship tier can pay for itself.

What does the NMAT route cost at the flagship schools?

The published figures are Rs 13,50,000 per annum at NMIMS (batch 2026-28 admission handout, AY 2025-26 Mumbai MBA tuition) and Rs 11,52,000 plus Rs 12,35,500 across the two years at KJ Somaiya. The NMIMS handout marks its figure expressly “for information only” and states that the AY 2026-27 fee will be intimated at the time of admission in the offer letter, so confirm the current figure in the handout itself before budgeting. The NMIMS application costs Rs 2,900, online only and non-refundable, in addition to GMAC’s NMAT registration fee, which you should check on mba.com.

KJ Somaiya’s figures cover the flagship MBA for the 2026-28 batch: Rs 11,52,000 for year one and Rs 12,35,500 for year two (kjsim.somaiya.edu admission page). Eligibility at both schools is a 50 percent aggregate in a recognised bachelor’s degree, per the NMIMS admission handout and the kjsim.somaiya.edu programme page.

Can you pay your way past NMAT?

No, and both flagship schools say so in writing. NMIMS publishes a standing caution that there is no management quota at NMIMS for any program, that offers of one are fraudulent, and that they should be reported to the police (nmims.edu/result). KJ Somaiya’s admission page states that it has no agents, liaisons or representatives and that admission runs only through its transparent published process. Anyone offering a certain seat behind either exam is describing something that officially does not exist; the promise itself is the warning sign. The full NMIMS picture is in our NMIMS management quota explainer, and every legitimate non-CAT route is mapped in our direct MBA admission guide.

How does Udaan help with the NMAT route?

We tell you which attempt strategy fits your target list, and we tell you before you spend a rupee on registrations you do not need. We have no partner colleges and take no commissions; every fee you pay goes to the college, against its published structure. And if the honest answer is that NMAT is the wrong exam for your list, or that none of these schools fits this year, we will say exactly that.

Does NMIMS accept my best NMAT attempt?
No. GMAC allows up to three NMAT attempts, but the NMIMS admission handout for batch 2026-28 states verbatim that NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate. Retakes do not count at NMIMS. Prepare to peak on attempt one.
Which colleges accept NMAT besides NMIMS?
On official pages we verified: KJ Somaiya (one of nine accepted exams, best of two attempts), O.P. Jindal at NMAT 160 plus, Jain's CMS Business School (JET written-test exemption at 160 plus), UPES (straight to interview at 120 plus), Great Lakes for the one-year PGPM, GITAM, MIT-WPU and Alliance.
Can retaking NMAT improve my chances at KJ Somaiya?
Yes. KJ Somaiya's MBA programme page states that the best of two NMAT attempts will be considered, and the exam score carries a 25 percent weight in its selection process for the 2026-28 batch, alongside a written ability test, problem situation analysis, interview, academics and work experience.
What does the NMIMS MBA cost through NMAT?
The batch 2026-28 admission handout publishes Rs 13,50,000 per annum as the AY 2025-26 Mumbai MBA tuition, for information only, and states the AY 2026-27 fee will be intimated in the offer letter. The NMIMS application itself costs Rs 2,900, in addition to GMAC's exam fee.
Is there a way into NMIMS without taking NMAT?
No. The admission handout states the NMAT by GMAC test is mandatory for applying, and NMIMS publishes a standing caution that there is no management quota for any program and that such offers should be treated as fraudulent and reported to the police.
