SPJIMR vs NMIMS Mumbai: The City's Two Biggest Doors Share No Exam at All

SPJIMR vs NMIMS Mumbai for 2027: SPJIMR takes CAT or GMAT at Rs 24.86 lakh all-in; NMIMS is NMAT-only at Rs 13.5 lakh a year. Both print no-quota lines, verified.

The short answer

As of 11 October 2026, SPJIMR and NMIMS Mumbai share no entrance exam: SPJIMR's PGDM accepts CAT and GMAT only at Rs 24,86,000, applications open to 27 November; NMIMS's MBA is NMAT-only, first attempt alone, at Rs 13,50,000 a year with its application extended to 25 October. Both print merit-only, no-quota positions on their official pages.

Mumbai’s two biggest private-management brands sit twelve kilometres apart and share nothing at the door: not an exam, not a selection philosophy, not a fee structure. SPJIMR reads your profile on a CAT or GMAT score; NMIMS runs your NMAT first attempt through its own machine. Candidates treat them as one shortlist — the institutes’ own pages say they are two different applications with two different calendars. This page maps the decision from both sets of official pages, opened on 26 September 2026.

The door: no shared exam, no shared philosophy

SPJIMR accepts CAT and GMAT only. The admissions page, opened today, prints the eligibility line — a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks — and the sentence that settles the exam question: “CAT and GMAT entrance scores are accepted.” XAT and NMAT do not appear. The application processing fee is Rs 2,500, the window runs 15 September to 27 November 2026, and the tentative 2027-intake interview phases run January 2027 (Mumbai phase 1, Kolkata) and February 2027 (Bengaluru, Delhi phases 1-2, Mumbai phase 2). Shortlisting sorts applicants into two printed groups — profile-based and profile-cum-score-based — weighing academic consistency across 10th, 12th and every graduation year, work-experience relevance, entrance scores and versatility.

NMIMS accepts NMAT by GMAC only — and only the first attempt. The Admission Handout 2026, re-downloaded today, carries the two binding rules in quotes: NMIMS “only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate,” and “30% of Seats in the MBA Programs of NMIMS will be offered to Female candidates.” Registration now runs 20 August to the extended close of 25 October 2026 at Rs 3,000, non-refundable. After the shortlist: a case discussion and personal interview. CAT 2026 registration closed on 15 September — which makes NMAT, closing 25 October, the door of these two that is still open to a candidate holding no score at all.

The money: two honest but different publications

SPJIMR’s fees page, opened today, prints Rs 24,86,000 for Indian participants including tuition and basic hostel/accommodation — marked indicative and subject to revision, with Global Fast Track and international exchange extra — and Rs 34,77,500 for international participants. The same page prints the assistance layer: merit-cum-means reimbursement of the tuition component after a July panel review, and the Mirae Asset Foundation scholarship of Rs 5 lakh each to two participants a year at the Rs 8-lakh family-income line.

NMIMS’s handout prints MBA Mumbai at Rs 13,50,000 per annum — Rs 27,00,000 across the two years before hostel — with the 2027-28 fee intimated at admission in the offer letter. On the published figures, the two-year academic totals sit roughly Rs 3 lakh apart before residence costs; SPJIMR’s number includes basic accommodation, NMIMS’s does not, so the like-for-like gap is wider than the headline suggests and narrower than double. The outcomes: one printed block, one question to ask

SPJIMR publishes its placement block on the PGDM page: highest annual CTC Rs 81 lakh, average Rs 32.10 lakh, median Rs 30 lakh, a combined PGDM and PGDM-BM process, and a full-batch-placed record the institute says spans over two decades. NMIMS Mumbai does not publish a campus salary table on the pages we have verified; the university’s Bengaluru campus publishes its own report (average Rs 13.5 lakh, median Rs 12 lakh for 2024-26), which is exactly the document to request from the Mumbai campus before paying anything. Our placement-report methodology is the reading frame for whatever arrives.

The sentence both pages print

Both institutes state their no-quota position in plain language. SPJIMR: admission “is strictly based on merit. SPJIMR does not have any quota, management or otherwise,” and it never appoints an intermediary to approach any candidate. NMIMS states there is no management quota for any programme and asks aspirants to treat such offers as fraudulent — a warning with history, since the university itself unearthed a racket that quoted Rs 15 lakh for a fake NMIMS seat. For the searcher typing “SPJIMR management quota” or “NMIMS direct admission”, those two institutional statements are the whole answer.

How to choose

Choose SPJIMR if you hold (or can write) CAT/GMAT, your profile has genuine depth — consistent academics, relevant work, achievements beyond the classroom — and the Rs 25-lakh bill fits; its shortlist is built to notice exactly that candidate. Choose NMIMS if NMAT is your stronger exam, you want the larger brand machine with the women’s provision and the case-discussion format, and a first-attempt rule you can plan a single focused sitting around. Choose both if you can run both calendars — they do not collide. And if neither exam is possible this season, the Mumbai city guide maps the MAH-CET route that needs neither.

Straight answers

Which is better, SPJIMR or NMIMS Mumbai?
They answer different questions. SPJIMR is the profile-read PGDM: CAT or GMAT, a two-group shortlist that weighs academics, work experience and versatility, and a published placement block (average Rs 32.10 lakh, median Rs 30 lakh). NMIMS Mumbai is the NMAT machine: one exam, first attempt only, a case discussion and interview, and a fee roughly Rs 3 lakh lower across the programme. Pick by the exam you can write and the selection style that favours your profile.
Does SPJIMR or NMIMS have a management quota?
Neither, in writing. SPJIMR's admissions page states admission is strictly merit-based, that SPJIMR has no quota of any kind, and that it never appoints intermediaries. NMIMS officially states there is no management quota for any programme and asks aspirants to treat such offers as fraudulent — the university itself once unearthed a racket quoting Rs 15 lakh for a fake NMIMS seat. Anyone selling a seat at either contradicts the institutes' own pages.
Can I apply to both SPJIMR and NMIMS for 2027?
Yes, and many candidates do — but you need two exams. NMIMS requires NMAT by GMAC (application 20 August to the extended close of 25 October 2026, first attempt alone counts). SPJIMR requires CAT 2026 or a GMAT score, with its application window running to 27 November 2026 at Rs 2,500. CAT 2026 registration closed 15 September 2026, so without a CAT or GMAT in hand, NMAT is the door still open today.
What is the fee difference between SPJIMR and NMIMS?
SPJIMR publishes Rs 24,86,000 for Indian participants including tuition and basic hostel, marked indicative and subject to revision, with Global Fast Track and international exchange extra. NMIMS's Admission Handout 2026 prints MBA Mumbai at Rs 13,50,000 per annum — Rs 27,00,000 across two years before hostel, with the second-year fee intimated in the offer letter. On published figures the two-year totals sit within about Rs 3 lakh of each other before residence costs.
What are the placements at SPJIMR vs NMIMS Mumbai?
SPJIMR prints its block on the official PGDM page: highest annual CTC Rs 81 lakh, average Rs 32.10 lakh, median Rs 30 lakh, with a combined PGDM and PGDM-BM process and a full-batch-placed record spanning two decades. NMIMS Mumbai does not publish a campus salary table on the pages we have verified — its Bengaluru campus publishes its own report (average Rs 13.5 lakh), which is the transparency standard to ask Mumbai for directly.
I have a low CAT percentile. Is either realistic?
Honestly: SPJIMR's shortlist is profile-first, so a merely qualifying score needs a genuinely strong profile to survive the read. NMIMS's bar is the NMAT score itself plus the first-attempt rule — a second NMAT sitting in the same year does not help you there. If neither fits your band, our low-score options page maps where a modest score still works in Mumbai, including the state CET route.
