NMIMS vs KJ Somaiya MBA (2026): The Mumbai Decision

NMIMS Mumbai vs KJ Somaiya MBA compared for 2026: sourced fees, the first-attempt vs best-of-two NMAT rule, selection weights and the legal lines.

The short answer

As of July 2026, both are full MBA degrees in Mumbai with no management quota. KJ Somaiya publishes its 2026-28 batch fee in full: Rs 23,87,500 over two years. NMIMS has published only the AY 2025-26 fee of Rs 13,50,000 per year. The sharpest difference: NMIMS accepts only your first NMAT attempt; KJ Somaiya counts the best of two.

NMIMS Mumbai and KJ Somaiya sit in the same decision set for the same family: two Mumbai business schools, both awarding a real MBA degree, both drawing from the NMAT pool, both officially closed to any paid side door. The differences that should actually drive the choice are quieter than the brand debate. One school forgives a bad exam day. The other does not. Here is the comparison on published facts only.

Are both degrees equal on paper?

Both are full MBA degrees from degree-granting universities, so neither side wins this row. NMIMS is a deemed-to-be university under UGC norms, rated NAAC A++ with a 3.67 CGPA per its official homepage, and its School of Business Management runs the flagship two-year MBA over six trimesters (SBM NMIMS MBA program page). The school holds AACSB accreditation, renewed for a second consecutive time, per its accreditations page. KJ Somaiya Institute of Management is a constituent institute of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, a private university established under the Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai Act 2019, per the university’s own FAQ page. The institute’s site displays NAAC Accredited and AACSB Accredited marks, though no NAAC grade is stated there. If a counsellor tells you one of these is “just a diploma”, they are wrong on both counts. The degree-vs-PGDM question, which matters elsewhere in Mumbai, does not separate these two.

What is the NMAT attempt trap, and why does it decide more than rank?

NMIMS counts only your first NMAT attempt; KJ Somaiya counts the best of two. This is the single most consequential difference between the two admissions, and agents routinely blur it. GMAC, which runs NMAT, permits up to three attempts per testing year, per its official mba.com NMAT page. That is the exam’s policy. Each school then sets its own acceptance policy on top. The NMIMS admission handout for batch 2026-2028 is explicit: NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate. The KJSIM MBA programme page states the opposite rule for its pool: for NMAT, the best of two attempts will be considered.

The practical consequence is a sequencing decision. If NMIMS Mumbai is your first choice, your first NMAT sitting is your only NMIMS sitting, so you prepare fully before you book it. A “diagnostic first attempt”, sensible advice for many exams, quietly destroys your NMIMS application. If KJ Somaiya is the target, a weak first attempt is recoverable. Our NMIMS selection process guide walks through the full sequence.

Which exams get you in the door?

NMIMS accepts one exam; KJ Somaiya accepts nine. For the Mumbai MBA, the NMIMS handout states the NMAT by GMAC test is mandatory for applying: you register for the exam at nmat.org, then file a separate NMIMS application (Rs 2,900, no GST, non-refundable, per the handout). KJ Somaiya’s admission page for the 2026-28 batch lists CAT, XAT, GMAT, NMAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, PERA-CET and CUET. If you hold only a CAT or XAT score, Somaiya is open and NMIMS is not. Eligibility is near-identical: a recognised bachelor’s degree with minimum 50% aggregate at both, per each school’s published criteria.

What do the two MBAs cost?

KJ Somaiya’s full 2026-28 fee is Rs 23,87,500; NMIMS’s current fee is not yet published, so only one side of this comparison is complete. KJ Somaiya’s admission page breaks its total down as Rs 11,52,000 for year one (2026-27) and Rs 12,35,500 for year two (2027-28), covering the flagship MBA and the Healthcare Management MBA. NMIMS’s latest handout publishes Rs 13,50,000 per annum, but labels it the AY 2025-26 figure, given for information only; the AY 2026-27 fee is not published numerically and will be intimated at the time of admission in the offer letter. So the honest statement is: Somaiya’s two-year total is a verified Rs 23,87,500, while the NMIMS total for the 2026-28 batch is not yet public. Confirm the current NMIMS figure on the official handout page before comparing totals, and treat any agent who quotes you a precise NMIMS 2026-27 fee as quoting a number the university itself has not released. The full fee breakdowns, including Somaiya’s cheaper Sports Management and Marketing Communications tracks, are in our NMIMS fee page and KJ Somaiya fee page.

On aid: NMIMS’s MBA program page lists ten Mirae Asset Foundation need-cum-merit scholarships up to Rs 30 lakhs, with criteria including family income below Rs 8 lakhs. Somaiya runs a scholarships portal, but amounts are not published there; queries go to the university directly.

How do the selection processes compare?

NMIMS runs a staged funnel; KJ Somaiya publishes an exact weighting formula. At NMIMS, per the admission handout: NMAT scores shortlist you, shortlisted candidates face a competency test and personal interview in person, and the final merit list combines NMAT score, interview, competency test, work experience and past academics, with the cut-off decided solely by NMIMS. At KJ Somaiya, the admission page weights the 2026-28 selection openly: qualifying exam 25%, personal interview 30%, written ability test 10%, problem situation analysis 10%, academic profile 15%, work experience 10%. Read that formula carefully: the interview outweighs the entrance exam, and profile components together carry 25%. A modest exam score with strong academics and work history goes further at Somaiya than the exam-first framing suggests.

Is there any paid route into either college?

No, and both universities say so in writing. NMIMS publishes a standing caution notice: there is no management quota at NMIMS for any program, any message offering one is fraudulent, no money should change hands, and incidents should be reported to the police and to the university. The MBA handout repeats the warning and adds that canvassing in any form disqualifies the candidate. KJ Somaiya’s admission page states that admissions are facilitated only through its transparent published process and that the institute has no agents, liaisons, admissions office representatives or MOUs. So a broker offering a certain seat at either school is selling something both universities have formally declared does not exist. Promises of a certain seat are the signature of the fraud, not a feature of the market. The wider legal picture is in our guide to what management quota really is, and the rest of the city’s options are in the Mumbai MBA hub.

How does Udaan help with this decision?

We help you sequence it honestly. That means mapping your exam plan against the attempt rules above, deciding whether your first NMAT sitting should happen at all before you are ready, and preparing the interview-heavy Somaiya funnel and the NMIMS competency-test stage separately, because they reward different things. We take no commissions from any college; you pay only the college, directly, against its published fee. And if your profile fits neither school this cycle, we will tell you that plainly and show you what is actually open.

Straight answers

Does NMIMS accept my best NMAT score if I retake?
No. The NMIMS admission handout for batch 2026-2028 states that NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate. GMAC allows up to three attempts per testing year, but for NMIMS only attempt one counts. Retakes can still serve other NMAT-accepting schools, including KJ Somaiya.
Does retaking NMAT help at KJ Somaiya?
Yes, up to a point. The KJSIM MBA programme page states that for NMAT the best of two attempts will be considered. So a weak first attempt is recoverable at Somaiya in a way it is not at NMIMS.
Can I apply to both with a CAT score?
Only to KJ Somaiya. Its admission page for the 2026-28 batch accepts CAT, XAT, GMAT, NMAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, PERA-CET and CUET. NMIMS accepts NMAT by GMAC alone for the Mumbai MBA; the admission handout calls the test mandatory for applying.
Which MBA is cheaper, NMIMS or KJ Somaiya?
A full comparison is not possible yet. KJ Somaiya publishes the complete 2026-28 batch fee: Rs 11,52,000 for year one and Rs 12,35,500 for year two, Rs 23,87,500 in total. NMIMS has published only the AY 2025-26 figure of Rs 13,50,000 per year; the handout says the 2026-27 fee will be intimated in the offer letter.
Are both real MBA degrees, not PGDMs?
Yes. NMIMS is a deemed-to-be university, so its School of Business Management awards the MBA degree over six trimesters. KJ Somaiya Institute of Management is a constituent institute of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, a private university established under a 2019 Mumbai Act, and awards an MBA degree too. Neither programme is a PGDM diploma.
Does either college have a management quota?
No. NMIMS publishes a caution notice stating there is no management quota for any program and that such offers should be treated as fraudulent and reported. KJ Somaiya's admission page states admissions run only through its transparent published process and that it has no agents, liaisons or MOUs.
