NMIMS Selection Process in 2026: From NMAT to the Merit List

The NMIMS Mumbai MBA selection process fits on one page, because the university publishes it in one document: the Admission Handout for Management Programs (NMAT 2025), which governs the batch 2026-2028 intake. Agents add stages that do not exist and remove rules that do. This page does the opposite. Every stage below comes from the handout or another official NMIMS page, and the one rule most applicants learn too late comes first.

Which NMAT attempt does NMIMS actually count?

Only the first one. The handout states it verbatim: “NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate.” That single line changes how you should prepare, because GMAC, which runs NMAT, sells up to three attempts per testing year (mba.com, official NMAT page). Both facts are true at once. The exam allows retakes; NMIMS ignores them.

This is the most conflated rule in the NMAT ecosystem, so keep the three policies separate:

• NMIMS MBA (NMAT): first attempt only, per the batch 2026-2028 admission handout.
• KJ Somaiya MBA (NMAT): best of two attempts considered, per the KJSIM MBA programme page.
• NMIMS BBA (NPAT): best of three attempts counts, per npat.nmims.edu. NPAT is the undergraduate exam and has nothing to do with MBA selection.

The practical consequence is blunt. For the NMIMS Mumbai MBA, your first NMAT sitting is your only sitting. Do not book a “practice attempt”. Walk in prepared, because a retake can rescue your application to other NMAT-accepting schools, never to NMIMS. Who is eligible to apply?

A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university with minimum 50% marks in aggregate, counting all subjects taken and appeared, per the handout for the 2026-2028 admission cycle. Final-year bachelor’s candidates may apply and receive provisional admission.

Applying means two separate registrations, and the handout is explicit that both are needed. You register for the NMAT test itself through GMAC (the handout points to www.nmat.org, which is GMAC’s registration route), and you file a separate NMIMS application on nmims.edu. The NMIMS application charge is Rs 2,900 with no GST, online only and non-refundable (batch 2026-2028 handout). That is NMIMS’s charge; GMAC’s NMAT registration fee is separate and paid to GMAC. Miss either registration and you are not in the process, whatever your score.

What are the stages after the exam?

Two published stages stand between the test and the offer, per the handout’s selection-process section.

Stage 1 is the NMAT itself. The test is mandatory and is the only entrance exam for the Mumbai MBA. GMAC submits the scores of NMIMS applicants to the university.

Stage 2 begins with shortlisting. NMIMS shortlists based on NMAT sectional and total scores of candidates who applied to its programs. Sectional scores matter, not just the total, so a lopsided attempt carries risk the total alone does not show.

Shortlisted candidates then face a competency test and a personal interview, conducted in person. How is the final merit list prepared?

From five named components. Per the handout, the final merit list is prepared based on marks obtained across the NMAT by GMAC score, the personal interview, the competency test, work experience and past academic performance.

Read that list carefully, because it answers two common questions honestly. Freshers ask whether work experience is required: it is not an eligibility condition, but it is a scored component, so experienced candidates earn marks there that freshers must make up elsewhere. Working candidates ask whether their years count for anything: yes, in writing. What NMIMS does not publish is the percentage weight of each component, so any table of exact weights you find on a coaching site is a reconstruction, not the rule.

One more published feature of the process: the handout states that 30% of seats in the MBA programs of NMIMS will be offered to female candidates (batch 2026-2028). That is a fact of the seat structure, printed in the governing document.

Does NMIMS publish a cutoff?

No. There is no published cutoff score for the NMIMS Mumbai MBA. The handout says selection is on merit only and that the cut-off is decided solely by NMIMS. The university announces outcomes through its official result and merit-list page at nmims.edu/result, and that page is the only place a shortlist or merit list becomes real.

This gap is where agents operate. A number nobody publishes is a number anybody can invent, so “last year’s cutoff” tables and “safe score” bands circulate without a source. If a figure does not appear in an NMIMS document, treat it as marketing. What you can act on is the structure: sectional and total scores drive the shortlist, and the merit list blends the five components above.

Can any paid route bypass these stages?

No, and NMIMS says so in writing. The university publishes a standing caution notice stating there is no management quota for any program, that any e-mail or SMS offering one is fraudulent, that no monetary transactions should be entertained, and that such activity should be reported to the Police and to [email protected] (nmims.edu/result). The MBA admission handout repeats the warning and adds that canvassing in any form disqualifies the candidate.
