MBA Through MAT in 2026: Where the Route Actually Works

MAT is the exam agents love to sell around, because it is the easiest serious MBA entrance to register for and the least understood. The truth is simpler than the sales pitch. MAT is a real ticket into a specific band of colleges that publish exactly what they ask for, and it is worthless at the schools whose names appear in the fake lists. What is MAT, and who runs it?

MAT is the Management Aptitude Test, conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA), and everything official about it lives on mat.aima.in. Per AIMA’s site, the exam runs four sessions a year, in February, May, September and December, in paper-based and computer-based modes. The September 2026 window is current: paper-based test on 13 September with registration closing 7 September, computer-based test on 20 September with registration closing 14 September, at Rs 2,300 for one mode or Rs 4,000 for both (per mat.aima.in, checked July 2026). Results come as a composite score on a 200 to 800 scale with a percentile alongside, per AIMA’s own score-interpretation document, and each session issues its own scorecard. The frequency is the point. CAT happens once a year. MAT gives you four chances, which is why it anchors most sensible plans made after missing CAT.

Which colleges actually admit MBA students through MAT?

In our verified set, four own-process universities admit through MAT: Christ, Jain CMS, GITAM and Alliance, each with a published bar you can check yourself.

One ambiguous case deserves honesty. KJ Somaiya’s MBA admission page for the 2026-28 batch lists MAT among nine accepted exams, but its programme page’s shortlisting bar names only CAT, XAT, GMAT, NMAT and CMAT. The two official pages disagree, so treat MAT at Somaiya as unconfirmed and ask the institute in writing. Its Year 1 fee is Rs 11,52,000 (2026-27, KJSIM MBA admission page), so ask before you pay an application fee.

Notice the pattern. At every college above, MAT is a ticket into the college’s own selection, not the selection itself. Christ runs a group discussion, written assessment and interview. Jain runs an essay, presentation and interview even for exempted candidates. The exam gets you into the room; the room decides.

Where does MAT not reach, whatever a consultant claims?

MAT does not reach NMIMS, WeSchool, Great Lakes or the IIMs, and those institutions say so in their own documents. NMIMS accepts only NMAT by GMAC, and its official admission handout adds a detail worth memorising: NMAT permits retakes, but NMIMS counts only your first attempt’s score. WeSchool’s entrance-test cutoff document for PGDM 2026-28 names CAT, XAT, GMAT, ATMA and CMAT, with no MAT. Great Lakes’ published admission pages name GMAT, CAT and XAT, adding NMAT only for its one-year PGPM. So the honest shape of the route is this: MAT opens the accessible tier of good own-process universities and a wide band of AICTE PGDM institutes. It does not open the top national programmes, and no intermediary can change that, because the exam lists above are published policy, not negotiating positions. Is a MAT-based MBA a compromise?

No, but it is a choice you should make with open eyes. On the regulatory side, MAT is a first-class citizen: Appendix-9 of the AICTE Approval Process Handbook names it among the six exams from which every AICTE-approved PGDM institute must admit, strictly on merit. A MAT score is therefore legally equivalent to a CAT score as a PGDM entry ticket; what differs is which institutes choose to accept it, and the more selective ones mostly do not. What MAT buys you is optionality: four windows a year, universities where selection weighs your interview and academics more than your percentile, and published fees you can verify before applying. What it cannot buy, at any score, is a seat at a school whose exam list does not include it.

How do you run the MAT route properly?

Register on mat.aima.in for the next window, then work only from official pages. The sequence that works:

1. Register directly on mat.aima.in before the session’s closing date. No agent is needed or useful here; registration is a form and a fee.
2. Build your college list from each college’s own admissions page, noting whether its bar is a score or a percentile. Christ publishes a score (600), Jain publishes a score (550) for its exemption, and others publish percentiles. The units matter.
3. Apply to each college on its own portal, for its published application fee. Christ, Jain, GITAM and Alliance all take direct applications.
4. Prepare for the college’s own rounds, because that is where selection actually happens at every MAT-accepting university in this guide.

What do agents sell around MAT, and what should you never pay for?

The MAT-adjacent sales pitch usually takes one of two forms, and both dissolve on contact with the official pages. The first is the padded list: portals showing top schools against MAT cutoffs those schools have never published, to make a phone consultation look necessary. The second is the promise of a certain seat at a genuine MAT-accepting college, which is selling you something the college gives away: Jain’s own JET FAQ states it has no affiliates, consultants or brokers for admissions, and Christ’s course page states the university collects no capitation or donation beyond the published fee.
