CAT 2026: The Complete Guide, and What to Do If CAT Isn't Your Path

CAT 2026 guide for realistic aspirants: who needs it, who doesn't, colleges that accept lower percentiles, and your Plan B if the score falls short.

The short answer

As of July 2026, CAT 2026 dates are expected, not official: notification on 26 July, registration through August and September, and the exam on 29 November, all pending confirmation on iimcat.ac.in. The score feeds the 2027 intake. CAT is essential only for IIMs and top PGDM institutes; NMIMS, Symbiosis, Christ, IBS and Great Lakes admit through other exams.

CAT 2026 key dates: every one of them is expected until the notification lands

CAT is the entrance exam the IIMs conduct, and it remains the widest single door in Indian management admissions. For the 2026 cycle, though, nothing is official yet. The dates below are the expected timeline we track on our deadlines page; the only document that fixes them is the official notification on iimcat.ac.in, and we will update this page the day it publishes.

MilestoneTimelineWhere to confirm
Official notification26 July 2026 (expected)iimcat.ac.in

One timing fact matters more than any date in that table. A CAT 2026 score feeds the admission cycle that opens after results, which means the 2027 intake. Colleges admitting students who start in 2026 are working from CAT 2025 and earlier scores; Great Lakes, for example, accepts CAT 2024 and CAT 2025 for its PGDM 2026-28 batch (official admissions page). So if your goal is to start an MBA this year, CAT 2026 cannot get you there, and the Plan B section further down this page is the part written for you.

On eligibility and pattern: the IIMs publish the exact eligibility clause, paper pattern, test cities and fees in the notification, and we do not print those numbers before they do. What you can rely on now is the floor AICTE sets for MBA and PGDM admission generally: a bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years with at least 50% marks, or 45% for reserved categories (AICTE Approval Process Handbook).

Who genuinely needs CAT

Two groups, and honestly only two.

First, IIM aspirants. IIM admission runs on CAT, and there is no side door. The IIMs have no management quota, no institute-level seats, and no paid route of any kind. Any consultant who says otherwise is describing a crime, not a service.

Second, aspirants targeting the top standalone PGDM institutes. Under the AICTE Approval Process Handbook, Appendix-9, every AICTE-approved PGDM institute must admit only candidates holding a score in one of six exams (CAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, MAT, GMAT) or a state CET, and must select “strictly on the basis of merit”. At the most selective PGDM schools, CAT or XAT is the score that realistically clears their published shortlisting bars, so if that tier is your target, CAT is worth the year it demands.

Everyone else has real alternatives. NMIMS admits through NMAT, Symbiosis through SNAP, IBS through the home-proctored IBSAT, Alliance through its own AMAT, Jain through JET, and Christ accepts MAT, CMAT and ATMA among others. Our direct MBA admission guide maps all of these routes, and our exam comparison helps you pick by target college rather than by exam hype.

Where a modest CAT percentile still opens real doors

If you write CAT and land mid-table, the score is not waste paper. A cluster of genuinely good universities publishes bars that a 50th-percentile candidate clears, and several of the same doors accept lower-stakes exams alongside CAT.

Notice the pattern: at this tier the exam score gets you to the door, and selection is decided by interviews, written assessments and your academic record. That is the honest meaning of an “accessible” MBA admission, and it requires no agent.

Your rights as an applicant, in writing

Two consumer protections are worth knowing before you pay any college a rupee. AICTE-approved PGDM institutes must publish their full fees on their website and brochure before admissions begin (Approval Process Handbook, Appendix-9, Clause 9.12), and must refund fees, minus only a Rs 1,000 processing charge, to any student who withdraws before the last admission date (Clause 9.11). A college that hides its fee structure or refuses a pre-deadline refund is already outside the rules.

If the score falls short: the Plan B decision tree

Work through these in order; each branch is a published, merit-based process.

  1. Your CAT score is modest but valid. Use it where the published bar is the 50th percentile (O.P. Jindal, UPES exemption) or where the score is eligibility-only (Christ). You lose nothing by applying at doors you already clear.
  2. Your score is below even those bars, or you missed CAT. Take a low-barrier exam that is still open. MAT runs in multiple windows through the year, and CMAT and ATMA are accepted at Christ, Welingkar, O.P. Jindal, GD Goenka, MIT-WPU and SRM. University own-exams are another lane: NMAT, SNAP, IBSAT, AMAT and JET all run on their own calendars. Our missed-CAT guide walks the full timeline.
  3. You want this year’s intake in a state system. Maharashtra’s institute-level rounds after CAP, Karnataka’s KMAT cycle and Tamil Nadu’s consortium process legally fill seats outside national-exam season, on merit, at regulated fees.
  4. Nothing above fits. Waiting a cycle and rewriting is sometimes the genuinely better call, and we will say so when it is.

The option that is not an option

There is no fifth branch where you pay someone to fix a low CAT score. IIMs have no management quota. NMIMS states in its official notice that there is no management quota for any program and that such offers are fraudulent (nmims.edu/result). Symbiosis states no donation or capitation is payable and that aspirants approaching through agents are permanently debarred (snaptest.org). Management quota is legal only where state law creates it, and even then admission must be merit-based and transparent at regulated fees; any payment beyond sanctioned fees is capitation, which is illegal. Our legality guide sets out the court rulings and state acts line by line.

Tell us your academic record, budget and target list, and we will tell you honestly whether CAT 2026 is worth your year or which of the other routes is actually open for your profile, free, and if the answer is “wait a cycle”, we will say exactly that.

Straight answers

When is CAT 2026?
The exam is expected on 29 November 2026, with the official notification expected on 26 July 2026 and registration running through August and September. None of this is official until the IIMs publish the notification on iimcat.ac.in, so treat every date as expected and verify there.
Do I need CAT for a good MBA?
No. NMIMS (NMAT), Symbiosis (SNAP), Christ (MAT and CMAT accepted, with the score treated as eligibility only), IBS (IBSAT) and Great Lakes (CMAT accepted alongside CAT) all admit without CAT through their own published processes. CAT is essential only if your target list includes the IIMs and the CAT-centric top PGDM institutes.
Which colleges accept a modest CAT percentile?
O.P. Jindal Global University accepts CAT at the 50th percentile or above; UPES sends CAT 2025 candidates at the 50th percentile straight to interview under its published exemption criteria; Welingkar and Great Lakes accept CMAT alongside CAT; and Christ officially treats the entrance score as an eligibility criterion with no bearing on selection.
Can I buy an IIM seat if my CAT score is low?
No. IIMs have no management quota, and AICTE-approved PGDM institutes must fill 100% of their seats from exam qualifiers strictly on merit under the AICTE Approval Process Handbook, Appendix-9. Anyone selling an IIM or top-PGDM seat is committing fraud. This is the single most common scam in this space.
