IIM MBA Eligibility Criteria in 2026: The Two Layers in Print

“Am I eligible for an IIM?” sounds like one question. In the printed documents it is two, and families who merge them make the expensive mistakes. Layer one is the exam: CAT 2026’s own eligibility, set out in the detailed notification the official advertisement points to (the advertisement itself prints the dates, the Rs 2,700 / Rs 1,350 fees, the roughly 170 test cities, and one sentence worth memorising: “mere fulfilment of minimum eligibility will not ensure shortlisting”). Layer two is the institute: each IIM’s own bars, printed in its own admissions policy, all of them stricter than the exam’s floor. This page maps layer two from documents opened on 12 September 2026 — with one disclosure: iimcat.ac.in would not serve our network today, so the CAT-side facts above are read from the IIM-Calcutta-hosted advertisement rather than the portal.

The academic floors, in print

The widest gap between belief and paper is the graduation-percentage floor. IIM Kozhikode prints the strictest academic bar we have opened: at least 60% aggregate in graduation, and 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12 beside it, for General-category candidates — with one carved-out route: holders of CA, CMA (ICWA) or CS need 50% in those professional examinations instead, and the three-year-graduation condition itself is waived on that route. Kozhikode also demands a positive — greater than zero — scaled score in all three CAT sections before anything else is read. BIM Trichy, an IIM-grade institute outside the IIM system, prints the more familiar shape: a 50% bar, with final-year candidates expressly welcome subject to completing the degree with at least 50% by June 2027. The lesson is not that one number exists; it is that each institute prints its own, and the only safe check is the target’s own policy PDF.

The percentile layer is a gate, not a target

Above the academic floor sit the CAT tables, and they are shortlisting gates — clearing them earns a look, not a call. From today’s opened pages: Kozhikode’s General bar is 85 overall with 75 sectionals; Trichy’s JAP 2026 table prints 95.25 overall for General (89 EWS, 88.5 NC-OBC, 75 SC, 44 ST, 30 DAP); Nagpur prints 95 overall with 70 in every section; Kashipur’s reference table — its 2026-28 cut-offs await JAP 2026 guidelines, the page says — prints 95 overall with 75 sectionals for General. Category relaxations are printed into the same tables under Government of India norms, and the CAT advertisement freezes one variable early: no category change is permitted after CAT registration.

What this means for a real candidate

Read the layers in order. If your graduation percentage is below 60%, Kozhikode’s door is closed in print no matter what your CAT percentile does — while other institutes’ 50% floors remain open; that is a fact to know in September, not in January. If you are in your final year, the policies welcome you conditionally — the degree evidence has a deadline, and missing it voids a cleared interview. And if anyone — consultant, agent, “counsellor” — suggests your eligibility can be adjusted, improved or managed for a fee, Kozhikode’s point 13 answers for every IIM: no individual or organisation is authorised to manage admissions, and attempted fraud is immediate disqualification. Eligibility is read off documents, not bought.
