JAP 2026: The Joint Admission Process That Runs Four IIMs, Explained

If you are applying to a newer IIM this cycle, there is a fair chance your interview travels further than you think. The Joint Admission Process (JAP 2026) runs the admission pipeline for four IIMs at once — IIM Raipur as the host, with IIM Kashipur, IIM Ranchi and IIM Tiruchirappalli — and understanding where the shared part ends and each institute’s own arithmetic begins is the difference between a plan and a hope.

What JAP 2026 actually is

JAP is not a separate exam and not a separate application season. You take CAT 2025, and after results the JAP portal emails eligible candidates a mandatory registration — miss the window and the candidature ends there. The shortlist for the Personal Interview is computed centrally for all four IIMs, and the interview itself is one joint performance: the published venue list spans Bangalore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and the four partner campuses.

Where the four IIMs stop being the same

After the joint interview, each campus ranks its own merit list on its own printed formula — and the differences are large enough to change strategy:

Read that table as a candidate: a strong interviewer with a modest CAT gains more ground at Raipur than at Trichy, while a high percentile with thin academics travels better to Trichy. Offers, waitlists and the honesty dividend

The JAP process ends in dated offer rounds, not phone calls. IIM Trichy publishes the full calendar — the 2026-28 merit list on 7 May 2026 and eleven dated waitlist rounds to 23 June — and then publishes how far each category’s list actually moved, which we break down in our waitlist-movement analysis. That level of print is the answer to the oldest rumour in this market: nobody inside a mechanical, audited, rank-ordered process can hold a seat for a payer.

One naming caution, because agents exploit it: JAP is not CAP. CAP 2026 is a separate common process for other IIMs (IIM Sirmaur admits through it, with printed gender-split bars), and Maharashtra’s state “CAP rounds” are a third, unrelated system entirely. When someone quotes a rule, ask which process’s document they are reading from — and then open it yourself.
