IIM Sambalpur vs IIM Ranchi: The 85 Door Against the JAP Partner

IIM Sambalpur vs IIM Ranchi: the 85 concession with no sectional cut-offs against a JAP 2026 partner — an unpublished fee against the signed Rs 19,20,000.

The short answer

As of 19 October 2026, IIM Sambalpur shortlists at a flat 90 — reduced to 85 for every female candidate and experienced men, with no sectional cut-offs — while IIM Ranchi admits through JAP 2026. Ranchi's signed fee prints Rs 19,20,000 plus mess; Sambalpur's flagship fee remains unpublished, its admissions page 404ing again today.

The most concessional printed bar in the IIM series against a partner in this cycle’s biggest joint process. IIM Sambalpur asks a flat 90 percentile — and drops it to 85 for every female candidate and every man with a year of relevant work experience, with no sectional cut-offs at all. IIM Ranchi admits through JAP 2026, the joint process hosted by IIM Raipur. Both documents were re-read today, 19 October 2026. One institute signs its fee to the rupee; the other prints no flagship fee at all — and its admissions page fell over again today.

The structural difference is who holds the pen. Sambalpur publishes its own bar and its own concession in a single table — you can read your position off it today. Ranchi’s own criteria document is dated 8 May 2025, written for the CAP 2025 cycle; for 2026-28 the joint JAP 2026 policy governs, and Ranchi’s merit lists come off the shared process.

The formulas: the career institute against the CAT institute

Sambalpur’s Pre-PI score runs out of 75: CAT 40 (computed as 0.31 x overall percentile + 0.03 per section), Class X 3, Class XII 3, graduation 4, work experience 20, gender diversity 5. The work-experience table is the sharpest we have printed: zero below 12 months, 5 at 12, 10 at 18, 15 at 24, the full 20 at exactly 30 months, then declining to zero beyond 48, measured to 31 December 2025. The final merit keeps the components out of 100 and adds the PI at 25.

Ranchi’s most recent published formula runs 65/20/15: the CAT component carries 65%, scored by section — Verbal Ability 15, Quantitative Aptitude 35 and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning 15 of the scaled-score maximums — with Profile 20% and PI-plus-WAT 15%. Female and transgender candidates take a flat 5-mark gender bonus on top, and the work-experience credit peaks at 24-36 months. Where Sambalpur spends more than a quarter of its pre-interview score on your career, Ranchi spends two-thirds of its final on the exam itself.

The bills: signed paper against no table at all

Ranchi prints Rs 19,20,000 for MBA, MBA-HR and MBA-BA 2025-27 — the most recent published table, signed by the institute’s Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer and re-read from the scan today. The Rs 1,10,000 acceptance adjusts as Term-1 tuition; tuition totals Rs 17,80,000 across six terms (Rs 3,45,000 in Term 1, Rs 3,15,000 thereafter), with a refundable Rs 20,000 caution deposit and Rs 10,000 alumni fee inside the total. Mess runs Rs 28,350 per term on top — about Rs 1.7 lakh across the programme.

Sambalpur’s flagship MBA fee is not published anywhere — and the door it was last seen behind closed again today. Its /admission/ page served from 12 to 18 October with contact blocks and the three policy PDFs but no fee table; today it returned a 404 on three separate reads while the homepage served normally. The only signed institute fee on record remains the MBA-BA Delhi programme’s Rs 17,25,000. We state that gap rather than quote an aggregator. Until the institute prints, treat any figure for the flagship as unverified, and expect the offer letter to carry the binding number.

The quota question, answered from print

Neither institute prints any management, institutional or discretionary route — no IIM does. Ranchi’s criteria document runs its shortlist off the CAT under the reservation framework; Sambalpur’s runs its three stages off the CAT alone under the same law. An agent quoting a priced seat at either campus is selling the thing those sentences name.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Sambalpur if your percentile sits in the 85-89 band (85 if the concession covers you), your sectionals are uneven — there are no sectional gates — or your profile carries roughly 24-36 months of real work experience. Accept that the fee is unpublished and the admissions page is unreliable; plan with the offer letter, not a rumour.
  • Pick Ranchi if your CAT is strong across all three sections (65% of the final), you want the printed Rs 19,20,000 certainty, and the joint-process convenience of one PI for four IIMs suits you.
  • Either way — register on the joint JAP 2026 portal for Ranchi and watch your email for Sambalpur’s January link. The institutes’ own pages carry the operative dates; no third party does.

Straight answers

What CAT percentile do IIM Sambalpur and IIM Ranchi need?
Sambalpur prints the lower, simpler door: General 90 overall, reduced to 85 for all female candidates and for men with at least one year of relevant work experience — with no sectional cut-offs at all, only a positive score in each section. Ranchi admits through JAP 2026, the joint process hosted by IIM Raipur; its most recent published institute criteria (8 May 2025, the CAP-era document) printed General 95 with 75 sectionals, and the joint policy governs this cycle. On print, Sambalpur's 85 concession is the most accessible bar in this pair.
Which is cheaper, IIM Sambalpur or IIM Ranchi?
Only one side can be priced today. Ranchi's signed fee document prints Rs 19,20,000 for MBA/MBA-HR/MBA-BA 2025-27 excluding mess — the most recent published table — with mess at Rs 28,350 per term on top (about Rs 1.7 lakh across six terms). Sambalpur's flagship MBA fee is not published on any official page as of 19 October 2026, and its /admission/ page 404'd again today after a serving week; the only signed institute fee on record is the MBA-BA Delhi programme's Rs 17,25,000. Until Sambalpur prints, any figure you are quoted for it is unverified.
How do the two selection formulas differ?
Sambalpur weights work experience harder than any other IIM we have mapped — the Pre-PI score out of 75 gives it 20 marks, peaking at exactly 30 months, and the final out of 100 keeps those 20 beside the PI's 25. Ranchi's most recent published formula runs 65% CAT (scored by section — Verbal 15, Quant 35, DILR 15 of the scaled maximums), 20% profile and 15% PI-plus-WAT, with a flat 5-mark gender bonus for female and transgender candidates and work experience peaking at 24-36 months. Ranchi puts two-thirds of its final on the CAT itself; Sambalpur puts more than a quarter on your career.
Is there a management quota at IIM Sambalpur or IIM Ranchi?
Neither prints one — an IIM seat is not purchasable. Both admit through CAT under Government of India reservation law, Ranchi through the JAP 2026 joint process and Sambalpur through its own three stages. Anyone quoting a priced seat at either campus is describing fraud, not a route.
Which should I prefer — IIM Sambalpur or IIM Ranchi?
On documents: if your percentile sits between 85 and 90, Sambalpur is the only one of the two whose printed bar can open — and the concession covers every female candidate and every man with a year of relevant work experience. If your CAT is strong section-by-section, Ranchi's 65% CAT formula pays for it, and its signed Rs 19,20,000 fee is printed certainty against Sambalpur's unpublished figure. If you carry roughly 24-36 months of work experience, both formulas pay for it — Sambalpur's 20-mark block is the richer of the two.
