IIM Sambalpur vs IIM Visakhapatnam: the concessional door against the interview-heavy machine
IIM Sambalpur vs IIM Visakhapatnam: the 85-concession door with no sectionals against the 82-overall bar with a 48/100 interview; an unpublished fee against Rs 23,58,590.
The short answer
As of 21 October 2026, IIM Sambalpur drops its General CAT bar to 85 for every female candidate and for men with a year of work experience, with no sectional gates, while IIM Visakhapatnam shortlists at 82 overall and weights the interview 48 of 100. Visakhapatnam prints Rs 23,58,590; Sambalpur's fee stays unpublished, its admissions page 404ing a third day.
Two solo-process IIMs at opposite ends of the transparency spectrum. IIM Sambalpur prints the friendliest door in this series — a General bar of 90 that drops to 85 for every female candidate and for men with a year of work experience, with no sectional gates — but has never published its flagship fee, and its admissions page is 404ing a third consecutive day. IIM Visakhapatnam shortlists at 82 overall, gives the interview 48 of 100 final points, and prints its bill to the last five rupees: Rs 23,58,590. Both documents were re-read today, 21 October 2026.

The concessional door against the sectional gate
Sambalpur’s Table 1 is the most forgiving printed entry among the newer IIMs we track: General 90 overall, and the footnote cuts it to 85 for male candidates with at least one year of relevant work experience and for all female candidates — EWS 80, NC-OBC 75, SC 55, ST 40, DAP 40 — with no sectional percentile cut-offs anywhere. Visakhapatnam’s Phase-1 table reads lower overall but adds the gates: General 82 with 70 in every section, EWS and NC-OBC 72 with 63s, SC 50, ST and PwD 40. The profiles each door fits are different: a candidate with one weak section has no printed path at Visakhapatnam and a real one at Sambalpur; a balanced 83-84 candidate clears Visakhapatnam’s Phase-1 bar and, if female or experienced, Sambalpur’s too.
The interview that decides, against the profile that filters
Visakhapatnam’s final aggregate is the heaviest interview bet we have mapped: PI 48, CAT 25, work experience 10, Class 10/12 and bachelor’s 4 each, diversity 5. Its Phase-2 shortlist already weights CAT at just 50 of 100 with school, degree, gender and work experience sharing the rest — and the page prints the work-experience formula (zero below 12 months, ten points for 24-36 months, tapering to 2.5 beyond 48). One more rule matters: if IIM Bangalore, Kozhikode, Lucknow or Indore shortlists you for their PGP/PGPM interview, Visakhapatnam will use the average of those PI scores — but skip all of those interviews and it marks you absent. Sambalpur’s policy runs its own scoring with a work-experience block peaking at exactly 30 months and the interview inside the final 100. At Visakhapatnam the room decides; at Sambalpur the concession and the profile decide more of it earlier.
The fee question — one printed, one missing
Visakhapatnam prints the full machine: tuition Rs 3,79,765 in each of six terms plus a Rs 40,000 Student Welfare Fee in Terms 1 and 4 — Rs 11,79,295 a year, Rs 23,58,590 for the programme — with a refundable Rs 40,000 caution deposit and a Rs 25,000-a-term advance for mess, air-conditioning and printing outside, and nine loan banks named on the page. Sambalpur’s flagship MBA 2026-28 fee has never been published in this cycle: its /admission/ page 404’d on 10-11 October, served 12-18 October with policy links and no fee table, and has now 404’d three consecutive days (19-21 October). The honest comparison is a printed Rs 23,58,590 against a blank — do not let an agent fill that blank with a number.
The quota question, answered from print
Neither institute prints any management, institutional or discretionary route — no IIM does. Visakhapatnam’s policy states offers are ‘made strictly on the basis of rank within each category’; Sambalpur’s policy applies uniform criteria across categories under the Government of India reservation framework. An agent quoting a priced seat at either campus is selling fraud; both official pages are the verification.
Who should pick which
- Pick Sambalpur if you are a female candidate or a man with a year-plus of relevant work experience whose overall percentile sits in the 85-90 band, or your sectional scores are uneven — its printed door is built for exactly that profile. Treat the fee as unknown until the institute prints it.
- Pick Visakhapatnam if you clear the 70/70/70 sectionals, interview well, and want a fully published process with the bill known to the rupee — the 48-point PI means preparation moves the needle more than anywhere else in this series.
- Either way — both are solo processes, so each needs its own application after the CAT result. Watch Sambalpur’s /admission/ page for the fee table; it has been down three days running as of today.

- Which is cheaper, IIM Sambalpur or IIM Visakhapatnam?
- Only Visakhapatnam's bill can be quoted honestly today. Its fee page, re-read 21 October 2026, prints Rs 11,79,295 a year — Rs 23,58,590 for the two years — with a refundable Rs 40,000 caution deposit and a Rs 25,000-a-term mess, air-conditioning and printing advance outside. Sambalpur's flagship MBA 2026-28 fee remains unpublished and its admissions page has 404'd three consecutive days, so treat any figure quoted for Sambalpur as unverified until the institute prints.
- What CAT percentile do IIM Sambalpur and IIM Visakhapatnam need?
- Sambalpur prints the lower, concessional door: General 90 overall, reduced to 85 for every female candidate and for men with at least one year of relevant work experience — EWS 80, NC-OBC 75, SC 55, ST 40, DAP 40 — with NO sectional cut-offs at all. Visakhapatnam prints 70/70/70 sectionals with 82 overall for General (EWS and NC-OBC 72, SC 50, ST and PwD 40) and cautions in print that offer cut-offs 'could be much higher'. A sectionally uneven candidate finds printed room only at Sambalpur.
- How much does the interview matter at each?
- More at Visakhapatnam than anywhere else we have mapped: the final aggregate gives the Personal Interview 48 of 100 points against CAT's 25, with work experience at 10 and small academic slices. Sambalpur runs its own published pre-PI and final scoring with a heavy work-experience block peaking at exactly 30 months. At Visakhapatnam, a strong room can overturn a modest percentile; at Sambalpur, the concession and the profile do more of the work before the interview.
- Can my IIM Bangalore/Kozhikode/Lucknow/Indore interview count for Visakhapatnam?
- Yes, with a trap. Visakhapatnam's policy prints that candidates shortlisted for the PI by IIM Bangalore, Kozhikode, Lucknow or Indore (PGP/PGPM) need not attend a separate Visakhapatnam PI — the average of those PI scores is used. But you MUST attend at least one of those IIMs' interviews: skip them all and Visakhapatnam marks you absent. Sambalpur runs its own process with no such averaging rule.
- Is there a management quota at IIM Sambalpur or IIM Visakhapatnam?
- Neither prints one — an IIM seat is not purchasable. Both admit through CAT under Government of India reservation law; Visakhapatnam's policy states offers are 'made strictly on the basis of rank within each category'. Anyone quoting a priced seat at either institute is describing fraud; verify on the official websites.
- Which should I prefer — IIM Sambalpur or IIM Visakhapatnam?
- On documents, Sambalpur is the more forgiving printed door — the 85 concession, no sectional gates, a work-experience block that peaks at 30 months — with the caveat that its fee is unpublished and its admissions page is unreliable right now. Visakhapatnam is the more transparent machine: every phase weight printed, a fee quoted to the last five rupees, and a 48-point interview that rewards preparation. If the bill is decisive, only Visakhapatnam's number can be planned against today.
