MBA Document Checklist for India: The Paperwork That Decides Offers

Every admission season, strong candidates lose weeks — sometimes offers — to a missing marksheet, a name mismatch, or a work-experience letter that says the wrong thing. The interview is not the last filter; the document file is. This checklist is anchored on two official documents opened on 20 August 2026: the NMIMS NMAT 2026 admission handout’s documents section and IIM Bangalore’s PGP 2027 admission-process document. Build the file once, keep it current, and no university’s verification day will surprise you.

Folder one: academics

• Class 10 marksheet or passing certificate. Every school asks; it also anchors your date of birth across the file.
• Class 12 marksheet or passing certificate. Same role.
• Semester-wise degree marksheets, every year. NMIMS’s handout is explicit: separate marksheets for each semester or trimester, with consolidated marksheets accepted only if the university does not issue individual ones. Self-attestation or principal attestation for internet copies.
• Degree certificate, or provisional/passing certificate if the degree has not been issued yet.
• Bonafide certificate if you are in your final year — IIM Bangalore lists it among required application documents.
• AIU equivalence certificate if your graduation is from an overseas university located in India — NMIMS marks this mandatory.
• Migration certificate at the admission stage.

Folder two: identity and category

• Aadhaar card, and the rule that quietly breaks applications: NMIMS’s handout states the name on the Aadhaar card and the admission form must be identical. Check every document for spelling variants now; a mismatch is fixable by affidavit or correction, but only if you find it early.
• Passport-size photographs in the format each portal specifies — keep both studio scans and phone-ready crops.
• Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in the current prescribed format if you are claiming reservation; OBC-NCL and EWS certificates have validity windows, so check the issue date.
• PwD/PwBD certificate where applicable.

Folder three: entrance and application

• Scorecards for every exam you are using — CAT, XAT, NMAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA, SNAP, MICAT, state CET. NMIMS candidates carry the NMAT scorecard to the in-person stage; the handout says so.
• Application confirmation pages — the PDF each portal generates after fee payment. NMIMS generates one on your dashboard and tells you to verify every field.
• Statement of purpose and reference letters where the school asks: IIM Bangalore requires an SOP and two online reference letters, submitted by the referees directly, with no extensions.

Folder four: work experience, if you claim it

NMIMS publishes the strictest standard in the market, and it is the right template for everyone: experience letters from previous employers; the latest salary slip and TDS certificate from the current employer; bank statements showing salary deposits; income-tax returns. Its exclusions are worth memorising because other schools quietly apply similar logic: internships, training and apprentice roles do not count; family-business and self-employment experience does not count; cash-paid salary does not count; and a professional agency verifies the file. Claim only what your paper can prove.

Folder five: admission-stage additions

• ABC ID — the Academic Bank of Credits identifier from abcidcard.co.in. NMIMS lists it among the details to keep ready before filling the admission form; create it once and file the number.
• Anti-ragging document reference number, filed after offer acceptance on the national anti-ragging portal.
• Medical fitness certificate, signed and stamped by a registered medical practitioner, in original — and a mediclaim policy, which NMIMS also lists.
• Gap-year affidavit or proof where a school asks you to explain years between degrees.

The five traps that cost real offers

1. Name mismatches across documents — the single most common verification failure, and the most preventable.
2. Consolidated-only transcripts where a school demands semester-wise sheets; get the university to issue the split versions early.
3. Expired OBC-NCL or EWS certificates discovered at counselling.
4. Work-experience claims the paper cannot support — worse than claiming nothing, because it reads as misrepresentation.
5. Scrambling in March. Shortlists move in days; the candidates who clear them have the file ready in January.
