FMS Delhi vs IIM Calcutta: Two CAT Ceilings, Rs 24.6 Lakh Apart
FMS Delhi vs IIM Calcutta MBA: about Rs 2.43 lakh against a printed Rs 27,00,000 — two CAT-only doors with official placement reports read today.
The short answer
As of 3 October 2026, FMS Delhi's MBA costs about Rs 60,818 a semester — roughly Rs 2.43 lakh across four — against IIM Calcutta's printed Rs 27,00,000 six-term fee (2024-26 structure, still the linked document today). Both admit on CAT alone: IIMC's interview carries 48 of 100 final points; FMS runs its own extempore-PI. Official averages read Rs 32.27 lakh (FMS 2024-26) versus Rs 35.07 lakh (IIMC's 2023 report).
This is the comparison that ends the “brand or bank balance” debate with actual documents. FMS Delhi’s MBA costs about Rs 60,818 a semester — roughly Rs 2.43 lakh for the whole degree. IIM Calcutta’s printed fee is Rs 27,00,000 across six terms. Both admit on CAT alone, both reject most 99-percentilers, and both publish placement reports we opened today, 3 October 2026. The fee gap — about Rs 24.6 lakh — is larger than the entire cost of most Indian MBAs.
The two bills, side by side
| FMS Delhi (MBA 2026-28) | IIM Calcutta (MBA, linked 2024-26 structure) | |
|---|---|---|
| Total fee | ~Rs 2,43,272 (Rs 60,818 × 4 semesters) | Rs 27,00,000 across six terms + Rs 20,000 refundable caution |
| Fee shape | Semester fee payable at the start of the academic year; revisable per University of Delhi instructions | Terms I and IV Rs 5,40,000; Terms II, III, V, VI Rs 4,05,000; Rs 1,00,000 on offer acceptance adjusts against Term I |
| Application | Rs 1,000 (Rs 350 SC/ST/PwD) | CAT registration Rs 2,700 (Rs 1,350 reserved) plus the institute stage |
| Seats | 251 sanctioned, full printed matrix | Batch 465 (2023 placement report) |
One label to keep honest: IIM Calcutta’s MBA page, re-opened today, still links the Batch 2024-26 fee structure — no 2026-28-specific document has replaced it, so read Rs 27 lakh as the latest official figure and confirm in the offer letter.
Two different ways to spend a CAT score
IIM Calcutta publishes its machinery. Stage I minimums for the open category are 80/80/75 sectionals with 85 overall — the policy itself warns actual shortlists run far higher — then a composite shortlist, then a final where the Personal Interview carries 48 of 100 points against CAT’s 30, WAT’s 8, diversity’s 6 and work experience’s 8. A weak interview sinks a 99.7 there.
FMS runs Delhi’s own machine: CAT shortlist, then its extempore and interview rounds, inside a printed 251-seat matrix (General 101, SC 37, ST 19, OBC 69, EWS 25, plus the supernumerary PwD, CW, Foreign, Ward and Orphan lines — legal reservation, never seats for sale).
The outcome documents, with their years on the label
| FMS (official report 2024-26) | IIM Calcutta (official report 2023) | |
|---|---|---|
| Average salary | Rs 32.27 lakh | Rs 35.07 lakh |
| Median salary | Rs 29.59 lakh | Rs 33.67 lakh |
| Placed / batch | 287 of 307 (304 appeared) | 573 offers for 465 students |
| Recruiters | 119 companies | 190 firms |
| Notable | Top-100 average Rs 45.196 lakh; 74.9% above Rs 25 lakh | 58th batch; cluster-cohort process with Hold-and-Wait and Dream policies |
IIMC’s average is higher — and three placement seasons older; the institute’s site links no newer final report as of today. FMS’s figure is the fresher document. At these fee levels the difference is academic anyway: FMS’s entire fee is under one month of either average; IIMC’s is about nine months of its own.
Who should pick which
- Pick FMS if Delhi works for you, the extempore format suits you, and you would rather graduate with Rs 24.6 lakh still in the family account — the single strongest financial position in Indian management education.
- Pick IIM Calcutta if the IIM-C network, the finance-quant tilt and the older, larger alumni base matter enough to fund the difference — and your interview craft can survive a 48-point interview.
- Either way — write CAT 2026 on 29 November; it is the only key that opens both doors. And if an agent offers a paid seat at either school, both institutions’ own documents, opened today, say no such channel exists.

- Is FMS really Rs 24 lakh cheaper than IIM Calcutta?
- On printed documents, yes: FMS's Information Bulletin puts the semester fee at approximately Rs 60,818 — about Rs 2,43,272 across four semesters — while IIM Calcutta's linked fee structure totals Rs 27,00,000 across six terms plus a Rs 20,000 refundable caution deposit. That is a gap of roughly Rs 24.6 lakh before living costs, read from both official documents on 3 October 2026.
- Which is harder to enter, FMS or IIM Calcutta?
- Both are CAT-only and both reject most 99-percentilers. The mechanics differ: IIM Calcutta publishes Stage I minimums (OPEN category 80/80/75 sectionals, 85 overall — actual shortlists run far higher) and hands the Personal Interview 48 of 100 final points, so a weak interview sinks a big score there. FMS shortlists on CAT with its own extempore and interview rounds; neither prints a fixed cut-off because both are rank-driven.
- Whose placements are better?
- Read with the evidence-year labels. IIM Calcutta's own site still links its 2023 final report: average Rs 35.07 lakh, median Rs 33.67 lakh, 573 offers for 465 students across 190 firms. FMS's official 2024-26 report reads: average Rs 32.27 lakh, median Rs 29.59 lakh, 287 placed, 119 companies, 74.9% of the batch above Rs 25 lakh. IIMC's number is higher and older; FMS's is newer. Neither gap changes the payback math at these fees.
- What is the honest ROI case for FMS over IIMC?
- Arithmetic, not opinion: at about Rs 2.43 lakh total fee, FMS's entire two-year cost is under one month of the average salary either school reports. IIMC's Rs 27 lakh is about nine months of its own 2023 average. If an FMS offer and an IIMC offer land on the same table, the Rs 24.6 lakh difference invested elsewhere is the real comparison — brand networks at both are strong enough that the fee, not the outcome distribution, is the decisive variable for most families.
- Is there a management quota at FMS or IIM Calcutta?
- At neither. FMS admits on CAT through the University of Delhi's published process with its printed 251-seat matrix (including the supernumerary ward, orphan and CW lines — quota in the legal, reserved sense, never for sale), and IIM Calcutta publishes exactly one route — CAT, WAT and PI on printed weights with Government of India reservation. Any agent offering a paid seat at either is contradicting both institutions' own documents.
- Do FMS and IIM Calcutta accept anything except CAT?
- For Indian applicants to the two-year MBA, no — both are CAT-only doors. FMS prints a foreign-national route on GMAT or GRE scores in its bulletin, and IIM Calcutta runs separate overseas-candidate procedures, but an Indian applicant with a GMAT score and no CAT has no route into either flagship.
