FMS vs IIM Ahmedabad: The Printed Rs 2.43 Lakh Against the Unpublished Fee

FMS vs IIM Ahmedabad: a printed Rs 2.43 lakh total against an unpublished fee that arrives with the offer letter — both CAT-only, audited placements re-read today.

The short answer

As of 6 October 2026, FMS Delhi's bulletin prints a semester fee of about Rs 60,818 — roughly Rs 2.43 lakh for the whole MBA — while IIM Ahmedabad's public pages carry no PGP fee at all; it arrives with the offer letter. Both admit domestic candidates through CAT alone. Audited 2025-26 placements: FMS average Rs 32.27 lakh, IIMA Rs 35.22 lakh.

This is the comparison where one side prints its entire bill and the other prints nothing at all. FMS Delhi’s official bulletin prices the whole two-year MBA at roughly Rs 2.43 lakh. IIM Ahmedabad’s public pages carry no PGP fee — the figure arrives with the offer letter. Both documents were re-read today, 6 October 2026, along with both institutes’ audited placement reports.

The two bills — one printed, one not

The honest label: FMS publishes the strongest return-on-fee number in Indian management education, and IIMA asks families to shortlist first and learn the bill later. That is not a reason to avoid IIMA — it is a reason to budget from the other top IIMs’ printed band (Rs 23-27 lakh across the older IIMs) until the institute’s own letter states the figure, and to treat any exact IIMA fee an aggregator or agent quotes as unverified.

Two CAT-only machines

Both doors read CAT 2026 and nothing else for domestic candidates. FMS shortlists from CAT into its own university process under the published 251-seat matrix (General 101, SC 37, ST 19, OBC 69, EWS 25, plus the printed supernumerary lines). IIMA shortlists for its Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview on a composite — 35% normalised application rating, 65% normalised CAT score — with the 2027-29 policy’s printed floor at 95 overall percentile plus 85 in every section for General and EWS candidates. CAT registration closed 15 September; the exam sits 29 November 2026.

The placement evidence — both audited, both re-read today

FMS’s official 2024-26 report prints average CTC Rs 32.27 lakh, median Rs 29.59 lakh, with the top 100 averaging Rs 45.196 lakh. IIMA’s IPRS-audited 2025 report — audited by B2K Analytics under IPRS Revision 2.2 with nil deviations — prints Maximum Earning Potential at mean Rs 35,22,591 and median Rs 34,53,000 across 393 domestic offers, a minimum of Rs 16,99,996 and a maximum of Rs 1,10,00,000.

The means sit about Rs 3 lakh apart. The salary heads differ — FMS’s CTC against IIMA’s maximum earning potential — so the honest reading is that both cohorts land in the same band, and the Rs 23-odd lakh difference in fees, not the Rs 3 lakh difference in averages, is what separates the two payback curves.

The quota question, answered from print

Neither institution prints any management, institute-level or donation route. FMS’s seat matrix is published law inside the bulletin; IIMA states reserved-category proportions follow the law and publishes no purchasable category for the PGP. At these two schools the entire intake moves through CAT — anyone selling a seat at either is selling something that does not exist on either document.

Who should pick which

  • Pick FMS if return-on-fee leads the decision — nothing in Indian management education beats roughly Rs 2.43 lakh against an audited Rs 32.27 lakh average — and Delhi works for the family.
  • Pick IIMA if the global brand, the newer-IIM-of-record network and the higher audited mean justify a bill you will see only in the offer letter — budgeted honestly in the Rs 23-27 lakh band of its peer IIMs until then.
  • Either way — both shortlists come off the same CAT sitting, so the exam is the shared investment. And if anyone offers to influence either outcome for money, both institutions’ own pages, opened today, show no such channel exists.

Straight answers

What is the fee difference between FMS and IIM Ahmedabad?
The widest transparency gap in Indian management education. FMS prints its figure in the official bulletin: about Rs 60,818 a semester — roughly Rs 2.43 lakh for the entire two-year MBA. IIM Ahmedabad prints nothing: the redesigned iima.ac.in carries no PGP fee page at all, re-confirmed 6 October 2026, and the exact fee arrives with the offer letter. Budget for IIMA in the same broad band as the other top IIMs and confirm the figure only from the institute's own communication — never from an aggregator or an agent.
Is admission to both FMS and IIM Ahmedabad through CAT alone?
For domestic candidates, yes — both are CAT-only doors. FMS shortlists from CAT into its own process under the University of Delhi's published seat matrix (251 seats). IIMA shortlists for its Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview on a composite of 35% application rating and 65% normalised CAT score, with printed minimums for the 2027-29 cycle at 95 overall percentile plus 85 sectionals for General and EWS candidates. CAT 2026 registration closed 15 September 2026; the exam sits 29 November 2026.
How do FMS and IIM Ahmedabad placements compare?
Both publish auditable documents, and we re-read both today. FMS's official 2024-26 report prints average CTC Rs 32.27 lakh and median Rs 29.59 lakh, with the top 100 averaging Rs 45.196 lakh. IIMA's IPRS-audited 2025 report (auditor B2K Analytics, nil deviations) prints Maximum Earning Potential at mean Rs 35,22,591 and median Rs 34,53,000. The means sit about Rs 3 lakh apart — and the heads differ (CTC against maximum earning potential), so read both reports' definitions before comparing the numbers.
Is there a management quota at FMS or IIM Ahmedabad?
Neither prints one, anywhere. FMS admits under the University of Delhi's published reservation matrix — the seat counts are in the bulletin itself. IIMA states that reserved-category candidates join in proportions mandated by law, and publishes no management, NRI, institute-level or donation route for the PGP. Anyone offering a priced seat at either is contradicting both institutions' own documents — at these two schools the entire intake moves through CAT.
Why is FMS so much cheaper than the IIMs?
Because it is a university department, not an autonomous institute. FMS is the Faculty of Management Studies of the University of Delhi — its fees follow the university's published structure, which is why a semester costs about Rs 60,818 and the whole degree roughly Rs 2.43 lakh. The IIMs are autonomous Institutes of National Importance that set their own fee scales. The FMS price is not a scholarship, a concession or a limited offer — it is the printed standard fee, and it is why FMS's return-on-fee ratio is the strongest in the country.
FMS or IIM Ahmedabad — which should I pick?
If both offers land, the decision is brand-and-network against return-on-fee — and it is the nicest problem in Indian management education. IIMA carries the stronger global brand, the larger audited mean, and a fee you will only see in the offer letter. FMS carries an unmatched payback: roughly Rs 2.43 lakh in fees against an audited average within Rs 3 lakh of IIMA's. Neither choice is wrong; what is wrong is paying anyone who claims they can influence either outcome — both intakes move through CAT alone.
