GITAM MBA Selection Process in 2026, Step by Step
Every published stage of GITAM's MBA selection for 2026: GBAT and its exemptions, the extempore round, counselling, eligibility, and the cutoff question.
The short answer
As of July 2026, GITAM's MBA selection has three published stages: apply and sit GBAT (waived if you hold a valid CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP or AP/TS ICET score), an extempore round for shortlisted candidates, then counselling to pick course and campus. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree with 60% aggregate. GITAM publishes no cutoff scores for shortlisting.
GITAM’s MBA selection is short, published and free of mystery: one test with a clear exemption rule, one speaking round, one counselling session. That has not stopped agent sites from wrapping it in invented cutoffs and paid shortcuts. This page walks through every stage GITAM actually publishes for its Bengaluru MBA, with the exemption bars, the eligibility line, the current 2026 dates, and a straight answer on cutoffs. The money side lives in the companion GITAM Bengaluru MBA fees guide.
What are the stages of GITAM’s MBA selection process?
Three stages, per the official MBA programme page, and none of them is a group discussion or a separate personal interview.
Stage 1: apply and appear for GBAT. The GITAM Business Aptitude Test is the university’s own entrance exam. The programme page calls it mandatory, with one large exception covered in the next section. In the phase current when we checked on 13 July 2026, the apply.gitam.edu Admissions 2026 portal listed 24 July 2026 as the last date to apply and 26 July 2026 as the exam date. GITAM runs admissions in phases, so treat those as the current window, not the final one, and confirm on the portal.
Stage 2: the extempore round. Shortlisted candidates proceed to an extempore, a short unprepared speaking exercise. This replaces the GD-plus-PI machinery most B-schools run. GITAM publishes no marking scheme or weightage for it, so prepare for the general skill, speaking clearly for a few minutes on an unseen topic, rather than for a rubric nobody has seen.
Stage 3: counselling. Candidates who clear the extempore attend a counselling session to select their course and campus. The MBA runs at Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, so this is where the Bengaluru choice is actually made. Bengaluru’s sanctioned MBA intake is 120, per the AICTE Extension of Approval for 2022-23, the latest approval document published on the university domain.
That is the whole published process. Anything an agent adds to it, a fourth stage, a discretionary round, a negotiation, is not on any GITAM page.
Which exams does GITAM accept, and who actually has to take GBAT?
Seven exams, and GBAT is compulsory only for candidates who hold none of the other six.
The programme page lists the recognized qualifying exams as GBAT, CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP and AP/TS ICET. It then states the exemption rule plainly: GBAT is mandatory if the candidate does not have any of those scores. Read in reverse, that is the useful version. A valid CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP or AP/TS ICET score means you skip GBAT entirely and enter the process at the extempore stage.
Two practical notes. First, GITAM publishes no minimum score for the exemption, only that the score must be valid, so a modest MAT or CMAT score still opens the door that a missing score does not. If a national exam went badly, this is one of the routes covered in our guide to direct MBA admission without CAT. Second, an oddity worth knowing: XAT and GMAT appear in GITAM’s scholarship slab table but not in its published list of qualifying exams. If XAT or GMAT is the only score you hold, get written confirmation from admissions that it qualifies you before you skip GBAT on that basis.
One trap to avoid from other universities’ rules: acceptance policies are school-specific. NMIMS, for example, counts only the first NMAT attempt (per its official admission handout) even though GMAC’s NMAT page allows up to three attempts. GITAM publishes no attempt-selection rule at all, so do not import another school’s policy here; ask GITAM directly if you have multiple attempts on file.
What are the eligibility rules for the GITAM MBA?
A bachelor’s degree with a minimum aggregate of 60%, plus a valid score in one recognized qualifying exam.
Both halves come from the official MBA programme page, and both are gates, not preferences. The 60% aggregate is stated without any published relaxation for category, work experience or final-year status, so if your degree aggregate sits below it, the honest move is to ask the admissions office in writing before paying any application fee, not to trust an agent who says it can be managed. The exam requirement is satisfied by any one of the seven accepted exams, including GITAM’s own GBAT, which is why no candidate is locked out for lack of a national score.
On the application fee itself: GITAM’s FAQ page mentions Rs 1,200 for candidates applying through the GAT route, but states no admission cycle next to it, so we do not treat it as a confirmed current figure. Confirm the amount on the portal when you apply.
Does GITAM publish a cutoff for MBA admission?
No. GITAM publishes no cutoff list for MBA shortlisting, and no official page we checked on 13 July 2026 names a minimum GBAT, CAT or MAT score that earns an extempore call.
Portals that print a “GITAM MBA cutoff” table are estimating, and agent sites that quote one are inventing. If you want the university’s own signal of what scores matter, check the official MBA programme page directly, because the only score bands GITAM does publish are scholarship slabs, not admission bars. Those are concrete: the 100% scholarship slab maps to a GBAT 2025 aggregate of 85-100 or a CAT/XAT/GMAT 2025 percentile of 90-100, with parallel bands down to the 15% slab across MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP and AP/TS ICET (GITAM MBA programme page). A score below every slab can still be a valid qualifying score. It costs you the discount, not the seat.
The distinction matters for planning. At exam-cutoff schools, your score decides whether you get in. At GITAM, on the published record, your score mainly decides what you pay, and the scholarship maths, including the 30% cap and the renewal rules, is worked through in the fees guide.
Is there a management quota route around this process?
Not on any page GITAM publishes. The university’s FAQs, admissions and scholarship pages contain no mention of a management quota, a donation route or any payment beyond published fees, and a site-restricted search on 13 July 2026 returned nothing either.
The two-layer picture from our management quota explainer applies directly. Layer one is what exists: GITAM is a deemed to be university (MBA programme page), and the three-stage merit process above is the only route its own pages describe. Layer two is what agents claim: a quota with a rate card. Karnataka’s legal management-seat layer lives in private affiliated colleges through KMAT, and GITAM is not in it. So an offer of a certain seat at GITAM for a premium is built on a category no official page mentions, and any payment beyond published fees is capitation, a criminal offence under Karnataka’s 1984 Act. The full legal frame is in Is management quota legal in India? The process on this page is genuinely accessible; nobody needs a side door into a house whose front door is open.
How does Udaan help with GITAM MBA selection?
We run your file through the published process and nothing else. Udaan checks your degree aggregate against the 60% bar, tells you whether an existing exam score already exempts you from GBAT or whether sitting GBAT is your better route, preps you for the extempore, and tracks the phase deadlines so a 24 July-style cutoff date does not pass you by. We take no commissions from any college; you pay GITAM directly, against its published fee structure, with a receipt. And if GITAM is the wrong fit for your profile or budget, we will say so and show you what else in Bangalore’s MBA landscape fits, including the answer “none of these” if that is the true one. Start at our contact page.
Every stage, bar and date on this page carries its source inline. GITAM runs admissions in phases and updates its pages between them, so confirm the current dates and rules on the official programme page and application portal before acting on any of it.

- What are the stages of GITAM MBA selection in 2026?
- Three, per the official MBA programme page: apply and appear for GBAT, the GITAM Business Aptitude Test, which is mandatory unless you hold an accepted national or state exam score; an extempore round for shortlisted candidates; and a counselling session where you select your course and campus. No group discussion or separate personal interview stage is published.
- Can I join GITAM MBA without taking GBAT?
- Yes, with an accepted score. The MBA programme page states GBAT is mandatory only if the candidate does not have a valid CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP or AP/TS ICET score. Hold any one of those and you skip GBAT entirely and move to the extempore and counselling stages.
- What is the GITAM MBA cutoff?
- GITAM publishes no cutoff for MBA shortlisting. No official page lists a minimum GBAT, CAT or MAT score that triggers an extempore call. The only published score bands are scholarship slabs, for example a GBAT 2025 aggregate of 85-100 or a CAT/XAT/GMAT 2025 percentile of 90-100 for the 100% scholarship. Those decide your fee discount, not your admission.
- What is the eligibility for the GITAM Bengaluru MBA?
- A bachelor's degree with a minimum aggregate of 60%, plus a valid score in one recognized qualifying exam: GBAT, CAT, MAT, NMAT, CMAT, SNAP or AP/TS ICET, per the official MBA programme page. The 60% bar is stated without a published relaxation, so candidates below it should confirm their case with admissions in writing before applying.
- What are the GITAM MBA 2026 application dates?
- In the phase current when we checked on 13 July 2026, the apply.gitam.edu Admissions 2026 portal listed 24 July 2026 as the last date to apply and 26 July 2026 as the exam date. GITAM runs admissions in phases, so confirm the live dates on the portal before planning around these.
- Does GITAM have a management quota for MBA admission?
- GITAM publishes nothing about one. Its FAQs, admissions and scholarship pages, checked on 13 July 2026, contain no mention of a management quota, donation or capitation route. GITAM is a deemed to be university and the only route its pages describe is the GBAT-or-accepted-score merit process. Treat any paid-seat offer in its name accordingly.
