The Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW): The Printed Discount Most MBA Applicants Never Claim
The AICTE Tuition Fee Waiver can take MBA tuition to zero at the Rs 8 lakh income line — IPE, XIME and IMT Hyderabad print it today. What it covers, what it never covers, and how to claim it. Verified 25 September 2026.
The short answer
As of 25 September 2026, the Tuition Fee Waiver is a printed concession at multiple PGDM schools: IPE Hyderabad caps it at parental income of Rs 8,00,000 and up to 5% of seats, XIME's TFW-2027 form is live on its fee page, and IMT Hyderabad prints a 100% academic-fee waiver beside its scholarship stack. It waives tuition only — never hostel, deposits or activity fees.
Every fee page in this cluster carries a line most applicants scroll past: a Tuition Fee Waiver that can take the biggest number on the bill to zero — if parental income is under Rs 8 lakh and the paperwork is right. It is regulator-backed, printed in black on institute fee pages, and scarcer than a scholarship. This page explains it the way we explain everything: only from what the institutes print, on pages opened 25 September 2026.
What the TFW actually is
The AICTE’s Tuition Fee Waiver scheme makes approved institutions hold a small share of seats — IPE prints up to 5% of approved intake per course — on which tuition alone is waived for income-qualified students. IPE’s fee page cites the AICTE circular of 3 August 2021 beside its table. The gate is parental income from all sources: Rs 8,00,000 a year at both IPE and XIME, with NIBM’s bank-sponsored variant using the same Rs 8 lakh line. What it is not: a bypass. The exam score, the application and the selection rounds all still apply — TFW sits on the merit roll, not beside it.
What it covers, and what it never covers
The single most important printed sentence is IPE’s: all other fees except the tuition fee shall have to be paid by the student. XIME prints the same tuition-only rule. Run the arithmetic on the real tables:
| Printed bill (2026-28) | Sticker | TFW residue if tuition is waived |
|---|---|---|
| IPE Hyderabad | Rs 9,15,000 | Admission + IT/library/activities + deposits ≈ Rs 2,95,000 across two years, hostel extra |
| XIME Kochi / Chennai | Rs 9,90,000 | The non-tuition component of the programme fee (XIME does not print the tuition split — ask the office), deposits and hostel extra |
| XIME Bangalore | Rs 12,90,000 | Same rule, bigger residue |
The honest planning number is the residue, not zero. At IPE, a waived-tuition seat still means roughly Rs 3 lakh of fee lines plus hostel — a real discount, not a free ride.
Who gets one: the income test and the cap
Three printed gates recur. First, income from all sources within the line — salary, business, rent, interest, everything; the certificate usually needs the competent authority’s seal. Second, the seat cap: up to 5% of intake at IPE, so a 300-seat PGDM cohort carries roughly fifteen waiver seats, contested among every income-qualified admit. Third, proof on time: IPE prints that inappropriate proof stops the registration; XIME requires the proof with the TFW-2027 form itself. Missing the window forfeits the seat to the next income-qualified candidate — which is why the claim is a deadline exercise, not a formality.
The variants worth knowing
Two neighbours in the same family do different things with the same idea. IMT Hyderabad prints a 100% TFW on academic fees with its own eligibility page — and stacks a separate 20% scholarship for all female candidates beside it. NIBM Pune, the RBI’s institute, prints a bank-sponsored full-tuition waiver on the same Rs 8 lakh income line that reached 22 students of its 2024-26 batch in its first year. Same income test, different funding source — and each is printed on the institute’s own pages, which is the only place a waiver promise counts.
The scam pattern to refuse
Because a TFW seat is real and scarce, it is exactly what a fake agent claims to “arrange”. The printed reality: the waiver follows the income certificate and the institute’s own form — at XIME the form is a public download, at IPE the admissions office administers it. There is no intermediary commission in any printed TFW process we have opened. If someone quotes you a fee to “secure a TFW seat”, the institute’s admissions office is the verification call — and our agent red flags page lists the pattern.
How Udaan helps with a TFW claim
We check the income line against the documents your family actually holds before you bank on the waiver, sequence the claim into the application timeline (the form and the proof have to move together), and compare the TFW residue honestly against non-waiver options in the same budget band — because a waived-tuition seat at one school is sometimes still pricier than a plain merit seat at another. Where the waiver is real and yours, it is the single largest printed discount in Indian MBA admissions; where it is not, knowing that before the application saves the seat.

- What exactly does the Tuition Fee Waiver remove from my bill?
- Tuition, and only tuition. IPE's fee page prints it in one sentence: all other fees except the tuition fee have to be paid by the student. At IPE that means the admission fee, IT/library/activities, deposits, hostel and transport stay on your bill; at XIME the same tuition-only rule prints beside its fee table. Budget for the residue, not zero.
- Who qualifies for a TFW seat?
- The income test is the common gate: parental income from all sources within Rs 8 lakh a year, with documented proof. Seats are capped — IPE prints up to 5% of approved intake per course — so the waiver is scarce and competitively allocated even among income-qualified applicants. Apply the day the form opens.
- Is TFW the same as a management-quota seat?
- No, and the difference is the whole point. TFW is a regulator-backed discount on the merit roll: you still need the exam score, the application and the selection rounds. A management-quota seat is a paid institutional category that some states permit within caps. TFW never lets you skip the exam; anyone selling a 'TFW quota seat' without an income certificate is selling nothing the institute recognises.
- Which MBA schools print a TFW today?
- On pages we opened 25 September 2026: IPE Hyderabad (Rs 8 lakh income line, 5% cap, AICTE circular of 3 August 2021 cited on its fee page), XIME across all three campuses (TFW-2027 form downloadable from the fee page, tuition-only, income proof required) and IMT Hyderabad (a 100% tuition-fee waiver with its own eligibility page). NIBM Pune separately prints a bank-sponsored full-tuition waiver for family income below Rs 8 lakh that went to 22 students of its 2024-26 batch.
- Can I combine TFW with a merit scholarship?
- Usually not on the same tuition line — institutes typically apply one instrument to tuition. But the neighbouring lines can stack: IPE's merit scholarships of Rs 60,000 to Rs 4,00,000 are percentile-keyed, and IMT Hyderabad prints a separate 20% scholarship for all female candidates beside its TFW. Ask each institute's admissions office, in writing, which instruments combine.
- What documents does the TFW claim need?
- The printed requirements converge on proof of parental income from all sources for the relevant financial year (income certificate from the competent authority or employer certificates plus ITRs), identity and Aadhaar linking where the portal demands it, and the institute's own TFW form — at XIME the TFW-2027 form is downloadable from the fee page. Missing or late proof forfeits the seat; IPE prints that plainly.
