IPMAT vs NPAT vs SET for 2027: Which BBA Door Fits You

Three exams, three closed systems, one decision. IPMAT opens the IIMs’ five-year Integrated Program in Management, NPAT opens NMIMS, and SET opens Symbiosis, and none of the three scores transfers to the others’ colleges. Why do these three exams get compared together?

Because they guard the three most sought-after private and IIM BBA systems, and because they cannot substitute for one another. A SET score means nothing to NMIMS. An NPAT score means nothing to Symbiosis. An IPMAT score opens the IIM Indore IPM and a short list of other colleges, but neither NMIMS nor Symbiosis accepts it. So the question is never “which exam is best”. It is “which colleges do I want on my list, and what does each one’s gate cost me in time, money and risk”.

The three also sit at usefully different points on the risk scale, which is what the rest of this page is about.

What does each exam unlock?

Each score opens one system, and the systems differ in both degree and fee.

IPMAT is IIM Indore’s own test for its five-year IPM, the closest thing to a BBA inside an IIM, leading into the IIM MBA without a second entrance exam. Beyond Indore, Nirma, NALSAR, TAPMI, NICMAR and IFMR-Krea accept IPMAT scores, per our July 2026 check of their admission rounds. Two doors that look similar but are separate: JIPMAT is a different exam run by NTA for IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya, and IIM Bangalore’s BBA (DBE) runs its own admission process on dbe.iimb.ac.in. IIM Indore publishes IPM fees on its own pages; confirm the current figure on iimidr.ac.in, since we quote no number we have not verified.

NPAT opens NMIMS BBA across its campuses. Published fees run Rs 2,75,000 to Rs 4,00,000 per year depending on campus, with Mumbai at Rs 4,00,000 per year (NPAT 2026 admissions handout, nmims.edu PDF).

SET opens Symbiosis BBA programs, with SCMS Pune the flagship. SCMS Pune’s published fee is Rs 4,10,000 per year plus a Rs 20,000 refundable deposit (AY 2026-27, scmspune.ac.in).

How do the attempt rules differ, and why does that change your plan?

The attempt rules are the sharpest difference between the three, and they should shape your calendar more than the syllabus does.

• IPMAT: one sitting. IIM Indore’s admission procedure has no retake provision. Shortlisting requires a positive raw score and a minimum in each of the three sections, and the final decision weighs the aptitude test 65 percent and the interview 35 percent (IIM Indore IPM 2026-31 admission procedure). One morning carries everything.
• SET: best of two. Symbiosis allows two attempts and counts the better score (set-test.org). The 2026 pattern was 60 questions in one hour, online, with no negative marking.
• NPAT: best of three. NMIMS allows one main attempt plus two retakes and counts the best of the three (npat.nmims.edu). SAT and ACT scores are also accepted.

The planning consequence is simple. A best-of-three score only helps if the first attempt lands early enough to leave room for the other two, so schedule NPAT and SET first attempts at the start of their windows, not the end. And treat IPMAT as the one exam where a bad day cannot be repaired this cycle, which is exactly why it should never be your only application.

One trap deserves its own paragraph, because families burn real money on it every year. An exam’s attempt policy and a college’s acceptance policy are two different rules. The clearest example is NMIMS’s own PG exam: GMAC permits up to three NMAT attempts, but the NMIMS admission handout for batch 2026-2028 states that NMIMS accepts only the first attempt’s score, while KJ Somaiya, taking the same exam, considers the best of two attempts (kjsim.somaiya.edu). NPAT’s best-of-three is NMIMS’s published UG rule, so it genuinely is a cushion. Just never assume a retake counts anywhere until you have read that college’s own acceptance line.

What does each application actually cost?

SET is the one of the three with a fully published figure on its exam portal: Rs 2,250 per test plus Rs 1,000 per programme applied to (set-test.org). Both attempts means the test fee twice, so a two-attempt, one-programme SET campaign is Rs 5,500. NPAT publishes its registration fee on npat.nmims.edu, and IIM Indore publishes IPMAT’s on iimidr.ac.in; both change by cycle, so confirm the current figure on those official pages before paying rather than trusting any third-party number, including ours.

Two rules keep this spending safe. Pay only on the official portal, and treat the registration fee as the only pre-admission money any of these systems asks for. Anyone quoting a larger figure to “arrange” any of these exams’ outcomes is describing fraud, not a fee.

What are the stakes if you miss a window?

A full year, because none of the three runs late rounds. The 2026 calendar shows the shape: IIM Indore’s application window ran 2 February to 14 March 2026 (iimidr.ac.in), SET registration closed 15 April with tests on 2 and 10 May and results on 20 May (set-test.org), and NMIMS closed all UG registrations, including NPAT, on 26 May 2026, per its official announcement. By June, all three doors were shut for the cycle. For 2027, watch each portal from December onward and check our deadlines tracker as windows open.

There is no side door after the deadline either, whatever July’s consultants claim. NMIMS publishes a caution notice stating there is no management quota for any program and that such offers should be treated as fraudulent (nmims.edu/result). Symbiosis states no donation is payable, it has appointed no agents, and aspirants who approach through agents are permanently debarred (snaptest.org). No IIM admits outside its published process. So which door should you pick for 2027?

Pick by target college first, then let the attempt rules set your safety net. If the IIM classroom is the goal, IPMAT is the door, and you prepare for it knowing it is a single high-stakes shot with no retake cushion; hold NPAT or SET alongside it as the repairable track. If you want the most forgiving premium system, NPAT’s best-of-three is the widest cushion, with SET’s best-of-two close behind. If budget decides, put the sourced fees side by side: NMIMS campuses from Rs 2,75,000 per year against SCMS Pune’s Rs 4,10,000 per year, and the IPM fee confirmed on iimidr.ac.in.

Sitting all three is a legitimate strategy, not indecision. The combined application cost is small against the cost of a lost year, and the exams cluster between January and May, so one preparation season covers them.
