What is NPAT, and what does it actually open?

NPAT is NMIMS’s own undergraduate entrance test, and it is the only door into the university’s BBA programs. NMIMS is a deemed-to-be university, which means it fills every seat through its own published process: no state counselling, no central exam requirement, and, as the university itself states in writing, no quota of any kind. If NMIMS BBA is on your list, NPAT (or an accepted SAT/ACT score, covered below) is the route. There is no second one.

That single-door design is good news, not bad. It means the process is the same for everyone, published in one place, and built to be forgiving in a way most entrance exams are not. How do NPAT attempts work?

NPAT gives you one main attempt plus two retakes, and the best of the three scores counts, as published on npat.nmims.edu. That is the whole policy, and it changes how you should prepare.

Most Indian entrance exams are one-Sunday events. A bad morning is a lost year. NPAT is built differently: a weak first sitting is data, not a verdict. You can retake twice, and NMIMS considers whichever of your three scores is highest. Plan for it deliberately. Treat the main attempt as a full, serious sitting, not a trial run, then use the retakes to fix specific sections rather than hoping for a generally better day. Students who go in thinking “I have three chances so the first one is practice” waste the most forgiving structure in the field.

Is NPAT’s attempt policy the same across NMIMS exams?

No, and this is the single most common mix-up we see, so read this section twice. Each exam, and each school, publishes its own rule about which attempt counts:

• NPAT (BBA, undergraduate): one main attempt plus two retakes, best of three counts (npat.nmims.edu).
• NMAT (MBA, postgraduate): GMAC allows up to three attempts in a cycle, but NMIMS accepts only the FIRST attempt’s score. Its official admission handout states verbatim: “NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate.”
• Other schools set their own NMAT rules: KJ Somaiya, for instance, counts the best of two attempts per its published shortlisting criteria (kjsim.somaiya.edu programme page).

The lesson is precise: the exam’s attempt allowance and the school’s acceptance policy are two different facts. NPAT genuinely rewards retakes. NMAT at NMIMS punishes the assumption that it does. Can SAT or ACT scores replace NPAT?

Yes. npat.nmims.edu states that SAT and ACT scores are accepted for admission alongside NPAT. This is the route many families never hear about, and it matters for two kinds of students: those already preparing SAT or ACT for applications abroad, who can reuse a score they were earning anyway, and those whose test calendar makes the SAT’s multiple international sittings easier to schedule than NPAT’s window.

Two cautions. First, an accepted score is an entry ticket into the same merit process, not a separate easier gate; selection remains NMIMS’s own. Second, confirm the current score requirements and submission process on npat.nmims.edu for the 2027 cycle before building your plan around it, because the university sets and updates those details itself.

What does the NMIMS BBA cost?

The NPAT 2026 admissions handout (official PDF on nmims.edu) lists BBA fees of Rs 2,75,000-4,00,000 per year across campuses, Mumbai Rs 4,00,000. The Mumbai flagship program sits at the top of that range at Rs 4,00,000 per year; other campuses, including Bengaluru, fall lower within it. The exact first-year figure for your campus and year is declared at the time of admission, so treat the range as planning information and confirm the current figure with the university before you pay anything.

Note what that range is not. It is not negotiable, it is not different for students who “came through a consultant”, and it is not the number any third party quotes you. Can you get into NMIMS BBA without NPAT, for a fee?

No, and NMIMS says so in writing. The university publishes a standing caution notice at nmims.edu/result stating: “There is NO ‘Management Quota’ at NMIMS for any Program.” The same notice says such offers should be treated as fraudulent, that no money should change hands, and that the offers should be reported to the police and to [email protected].

So when someone offers an NMIMS BBA seat without NPAT, or promises a certain seat for a package price, they are selling something the university has publicly declared does not exist. The pattern to watch for is always the same: a fee payable to a middleman rather than the college, urgency about a seat that will “close today”, and paperwork that never includes an offer letter from NMIMS itself. NPAT’s best-of-three format is the honest version of what these offers pretend to sell: a genuinely accessible route, published by the university, at the published fee. How should you plan an NPAT year?

Work backwards from the attempt structure. Decide early whether NMIMS is your first choice or one of several, because that decides how much of your calendar NPAT gets. A sensible sequence for a Class 12 student: confirm the 2027 dates on npat.nmims.edu as soon as they publish, book the main attempt where it clears your board exams comfortably, and hold the retakes in reserve for specific weaknesses the first score reveals.

Then pair NPAT with one alternative, not five. If the IIMs’ five-year integrated route tempts you, that is IPMAT, a genuinely competitive national exam where NPAT’s retake cushion does not exist.
