IPM vs BBA + MBA: Two Roads to the Same Classroom, Compared Honestly
IPM's five-year IIM commitment vs the 3+2 BBA-then-MBA road: entry odds, sourced costs, exit risk and the legal facts, from official sources only.
The short answer
As of July 2026, both roads end in the same kind of classroom. IPM commits you to one IIM for five years on the strength of one exam at 17; a three-year BBA plus a two-year MBA spreads the risk across two admission seasons and lets you re-choose at 21. Neither path has a quota, donation or agent shortcut.
Every family staring at IPMAT eventually asks the same question: is the five-year IIM programme worth betting on, or is a normal BBA followed by an MBA the smarter road? Coaching sites answer with enrolment forms. This page answers with structure: what each road is, where the gates sit, what is verifiably known about cost, and where each road breaks.
What are the two roads, exactly?
One road is a single five-year commitment; the other is two separate degrees with a second admission season in between.
IPM is the Integrated Programme in Management: you enter an IIM straight after Class 12 and stay five years. IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak admit through their own IPMAT exams, and IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya admit through NTA’s JIPMAT. Our IPMAT guide covers the exam layer in detail. For programme structure, degree titles and exit rules, read the programme pages on iimidr.ac.in and iimrohtak.ac.in directly; those details sit outside what we have verified, and summaries on third-party sites are frequently stale.
BBA + MBA is the 3+2 road: a three-year BBA at a good college now, then a two-year MBA entered through a fresh admission season, most commonly CAT for the IIMs, around age 21. The BBA gates are the accessible ones on our direct BBA admission list; the MBA gate is a national exam you sit as a graduate.
A third shape sits between them: some private universities run their own integrated five-year programmes, such as O.P. Jindal Global University’s Integrated BBA (Hons) + MBA, admitted through JGU’s own published process (jgu.edu.in). Five-year structure, no IIM brand, no single-exam gate.
Which road is harder to enter?
IPM is harder, and the difference is not the syllabus but the shape of the gate. IPM concentrates everything into one competitive exam with no retake cushion. IIM Indore’s IPM 2026-31 admission procedure sets no minimum Class 12 percentage, which sounds generous until you see what replaces it: the test is the entire filter, a candidate needs a positive raw score and a minimum mark in each of the three sections just to reach the interview, and the final decision weighs the aptitude test at 65 percent and the interview at 35 percent. Miss the sectional bar in one section and the other two cannot save you.
The BBA road distributes the same pressure across many doors. NPAT runs one main attempt plus two retakes with the best of three counting (npat.nmims.edu). SET allows two attempts with the best score counting (set-test.org). Several universities admit on Class 12 marks alone through published merit processes. A bad morning ends an IPMAT campaign; on the BBA road it costs you one application among several. The full map is in our BBA exams comparison; the runway for either road starts in our Class 11 prep timeline.
The 3+2 road does defer its hard gate rather than remove it. CAT waits at the end, and it is genuinely competitive. But you meet it at 21, with a graduate record, and it can be retaken across cycles. IPMAT is met once, at 17.
What does each road cost?
Honestly: we can source the BBA side, and we will not quote the IPM side, because no IIM IPM fee figure sits in our verified data layer as of 13 July 2026. Confirm the current IPM fee schedule on iimidr.ac.in and iimrohtak.ac.in before you plan finances around this road. A fee number for an IIM that you found anywhere other than the IIM’s own site is a number to check, not a number to use.
On the 3+2 side, here is what official pages publish today. BBA years at strong own-process universities run in a band around Rs 4 lakh per year: Rs 4,00,000 per year at NMIMS Mumbai’s BBA (NPAT 2026 admissions handout, official nmims.edu PDF) and Rs 4,10,000 per year plus a Rs 20,000 refundable deposit at SCMS Pune (AY 2026-27, scmspune.ac.in). The MBA years cost more: NMIMS Mumbai’s flagship MBA tuition is Rs 13,50,000 per annum, published in the batch 2026-2028 admission handout as the AY 2025-26 figure for information only, with the AY 2026-27 fee intimated in the offer letter. An IIM MBA entered through CAT has its own published fee on each IIM’s site. For the integrated middle path, JGU lists Rs 4,50,000 per year tuition for its Integrated BBA (Hons) + MBA (2026 cycle, jgu.edu.in, which notes increases of roughly 10 percent per year).
Two cautions on comparing totals. First, do the five-year-versus-3+2 arithmetic only with the IPM figure confirmed from the official page. Second, the 3+2 road’s MBA fee depends on where CAT lands you, which is unknowable at 17. IPM buys certainty of cost and place; the 3+2 road leaves both open, in both directions.
What does the 3+2 road demand later that IPM does not?
A second admission season, run to rules you must re-learn as a graduate. CAT is conducted by the IIMs, with the 2026 exam expected on 29 November 2026 and nothing official until the notification publishes on iimcat.ac.in; our CAT 2026 page tracks it. The AICTE floor for MBA and PGDM admission is a three-year bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent marks, 45 percent for reserved categories (AICTE Approval Process Handbook).
The rules also differ school by school, in ways that punish assumption. One documented example: GMAC allows up to three NMAT attempts per testing year, but NMIMS accepts only the first attempt’s score for its MBA (batch 2026-2028 admission handout). A student planning to warm up on attempt one would burn their NMIMS application doing it. None of this is hard, but it is a second campaign, fought at 21.
Which road handles failure better?
The 3+2 road, clearly, because it fails in parts rather than whole. If IPMAT goes wrong, the IPM road for that year is simply over; the honest next steps are in our post-IPMAT options guide. If a BBA application goes wrong, four others are still open. If CAT goes wrong at 21, it can be rewritten, and the BBA degree stands on its own in the meantime.
IPM’s corresponding weakness is commitment: you choose one institute and one field at 17, before most students have sat in a management lecture. What the exit rules are if your interests change mid-programme is exactly the detail to read on the IIM’s own programme page before applying, not after.
Is there a paid shortcut into either road?
No, on both roads, and the claim itself is the warning sign. No IIM has a management quota for any programme; IPM admission runs on the published test-and-interview process and nothing else. On the BBA side, the universities agents most often name say the same in writing: NMIMS publishes a standing caution that there is no management quota for any program and that such offers should be treated as fraudulent (nmims.edu/result). Promises of a certain seat on either road describe capitation, which is illegal, and the payer carries legal risk too. The full picture is in Is management quota legal in India?
So which should you choose?
Choose by risk shape, not by prestige. IPM fits the student with real aptitude-test form by Class 11 who wants the IIM environment early, at a five-year cost confirmed from the official fee page. The 3+2 road fits the student who wants accessible gates now, the right to re-choose at 21, and a run at the IIMs with a graduate profile. The integrated private programmes fit families who want fixed structure without a single-exam entry.
And whichever way you lean, never make IPMAT the only application in the season. It is the one exam in this comparison with no retake cushion, and a plan with one door is not a plan.
How does Udaan help with this decision?
We help you choose the road before you spend money on either. That means an honest read of your Class 11-12 profile against IPMAT’s sectional structure, a parallel BBA list with real retake room, and cost planning built only from figures confirmed on official pages, including the IPM fees this page deliberately does not quote. We take no commissions, every fee goes to the institution directly, and if the honest answer is that neither road should be forced this cycle, we will say exactly that. Tell us where you stand and ask us directly.

- Is IPM better than doing a BBA and then an MBA?
- Neither is better in the abstract. IPM front-loads the risk: one competitive exam at 17, then five committed years at one institute. The 3+2 road spreads it: accessible BBA gates now, CAT at 21 with a graduate profile. A student with strong aptitude-test form in Class 12 leans IPM; a student who wants room to re-decide leans 3+2.
- What does IIM Indore's IPM cost?
- We do not quote a figure because no IPM fee sits in our verified data layer as of 13 July 2026. Confirm the current fee schedule on iimidr.ac.in (and iimrohtak.ac.in for Rohtak) before planning finances. Treat any fee number on a coaching or consultancy site as unverified until you see it on the IIM's own page.
- Can I still reach an IIM if I skip IPM and do a regular BBA?
- Yes. CAT, conducted by the IIMs themselves, is the standard gate into every IIM's two-year MBA, and you sit it in your final BBA year competing as a graduate rather than a Class 12 student. The AICTE floor for MBA admission is a three-year bachelor's degree with 50 percent marks, 45 percent for reserved categories.
- Does any IIM admit to IPM through management quota or donation?
- No. No IIM has a management quota for any programme. IIM Indore's published IPM procedure runs on an aptitude test with sectional minimums and an interview, weighted 65 and 35 percent, and nothing else. Anyone promising a certain IPM seat for money is describing a fraud, not a route.
- Which exams should a Class 12 student run alongside IPMAT?
- Exams with retake room. NPAT allows one main attempt plus two retakes with the best of three counting (npat.nmims.edu), and SET allows two attempts with the best score counting (set-test.org). IPMAT has no such cushion, so it should anchor your plan, never be the whole of it.
- Do IPM graduates and CAT entrants get the same degree?
- Degree titles, programme structure and exit rules are published by each IIM on its own programme pages, and we have not independently verified them, so read iimidr.ac.in and iimrohtak.ac.in directly rather than trusting summaries. What is verifiable is the admission route: IPM enters after Class 12, the two-year MBA enters after graduation through CAT.
